Brussels, Belgium: Charming Traditions Make a Great Place to Visit

Brussels, Belgium is a city shouldering many responsibilities. It is the capital of Belgium, the capital of Flanders, the capital of the French Community of Belgium. It is also the location of many of the European Union's institutions and is, therefore, considered the capital of the European Union. And, if that weren't enough, it's also the political seat of NATO. Although its responsibilities give it an air of importance, Brussels is not to be overlooked as one of the premier vacation cities in Europe.

The city's name is derived from an old Dutch word, broucsella, which means "marsh home" or "home consisting of one room, in the marsh." Along with its rather quaint name, Brussels has an equally charming body of local traditions.

One such tradition is the House of Toone, a theater of marionette puppets. It was originally in the Marolles area. However, it presently holds shows that introduce visitors to the local languages and customs in a 1696 estaminet just steps away from the Grand Place.

Another popular tradition in Brussels is the Ommegang, which means "walking around." The tradition began in the 14th century as a religious processional. It occurs each July and is in memory of Charles V's Joyous Entry into Brussels in 1549. The parade is very colorful, including floats, giant puppets, and groups dressed in medieval costumes.

Still another interesting custom is the Meyboom or "tree of May" celebration. As part of this ancient festivity, a young beech tree is paraded through the city and planted amongst joyful music and giant puppets.

Brussels also has many cultural attractions and landmarks, such as Grand Place, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, and the Royal Palace of Belgium. Belgium is also the birthplace of many comic characters, like the Smurfs, Largo Winch, Tintin, and Lucky Luke, so there are many murals and frescos throughout the city honoring these characters.

Indeed, the comic spirit of the inhabitants of Brussels is evident in its most famous statue. A quirky little bronze statue called Manneken Pis or Jeanneke Pis. It depicts a little boy urinating into the basin of a fountain.

Visitors to Brussels, Belgium will find a variety of accommodations suited to meet the needs of virtually any tourist. These accommodations include both hotels and holiday apartments.

Will Pop Culture Embrace 'Watchmen'?

Something old, Something new. Something borrowed, Something blue.

As a sporadic comic book fan growing up in the 1980's, one would think the original 12-issue graphic novel 'Watchmen' would be among the stack of comic books I collected over the last two and a half decades but you would be wrong. I didn't discover Watchmen until several years after it had already been published. Even then, once I was informed that only one of the so called "superheroes" in the novel actually has superpowers, I completely lost interest in reading it. Flash forward to 2007 when news broke that a 'Watchmen' movie was in production. My interest was rekindled. A 'Watchmen' movie? Why would they make a 'Watchmen' movie before 'The Justice League of America', 'Avengers', or even the plucky 'Teen Titans' I wondered? The fanboy sites caught on fire. It was like someone finally made a movie for them. Not just because it was the popular thing to do.

I decided to borrow the graphic novel from a friend to investigate what all the excitement was about. I was blown away. Writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons are brilliant. They transcend the medium. This is not merely a comic book or a graphic novel, this is an extraordinary piece of literature. Now I became just as excited as the fans who waited decades to see the movie. How could they have waited this long? Maybe my ignorance spared me some sort of unnecessary frustration. Pictures of the characters were released online. It was like feeding morsels of cheese to starving mice. The fanboys went crazy. Then the complaints came. Why are the actors so young? They're supposed to be retired superheros, right? Why is Rorschach so short? Dan Dreiberg should have a pot belly like he does in the graphic novel. Rumors followed. The script changed the original ending and no "Tales of the Black Freighter" in-story narrative. Then the trailer calmed the doubters. Director Zack Snyder was religiously faithful to the heart of the graphic novel in ways that mattered visually and verbally. The integrity of the novel and its violent depiction of an alternate 1985 America was not compromised for the moviegoing demographic and big box office returns.

Watching Watchmen.

Perhaps a more fitting title would have been "Will Pop Culture Embrace 'Watchmen'? Maybe it Has Already." What does 'Ghost' (1990) and 'Watchmen' have in common? Ask "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof. The graphic novel has had a near subliminal effect on pop culture over the decades. Is the memorable scene of Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze kissing at the end of the film inspired by a similar smooch from the graphic novel? Lindelof cites 'Watchmen' comic's use of origin-story flashbacks and hidden clues as a major influence on his hit TV series.

There isn't a single doubt that fans of the graphic novel will flock to the theaters to see 'Watchmen' but will it be embraced or ignored by pop culture? So far Hollywood has adapted three of Alan Moore's graphic novels: 'From Hell' (2001), 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' (2003) and 'V for Vendetta' (2005). All of those films featured big stars but under performed at the box-office. Snyder has a different approach. He cast up-and-coming; not well-known actors, in hope moviegoers will see the characters not stars onscreen. But you have to get them into the theaters first. Warner Bros. has been working overtime distributing promotional material, attending movie conventions, posting online Video Journals, clips, posters, buying expensive TV spots, selling video games, toys and soundtracks -- not to mention selling millions of books. All while battling 20th Century Fox over rights to the film. Still I doubt the movie will become a pop culture phenomenon on the same level as 'X-Men' or 'The Fantastic Four'. Watchmen Graphic Novel Should be Left a Comic Book

Started in 1986, writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons formulate a mystery based on the Cold War, wherein the threat of nuclear warfare is an imminent fear. The story explores the possibility that superheroes existed in the 1940s. Thus, in the setting of the Watchmen graphic novel, superheroes are roughly classified into two. They are either working for the government, donning their suits while on retainer by people’s taxes, or they are outlawed. Most superheroes not working for the government have decided to embark on other productive endeavors like business, leaving crime-fighting and costume-wearing behind. Some continue to be heroes, but are considered as fugitives, thanks to the law that was passed outlawing superheroes.

Creator Alan Moore cannot be blamed for wanting his art to remain in the chosen medium it was created. Not only due to the huge differences between perusing a comic book and watching a film, but undeniably also because of the harrowing experiences he had with his publisher and the process of converting his work from paper to film. Initially, he thought that separating himself from the process of converting his work to a movie would turn out fine. Moore admits that he was wrong about distancing himself. The latest of his work to be released as a movie is the Watchmen graphic novel.

“The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” one of Moore’s works, was adapted into film. He distanced himself, feeling that as long as he didn’t see any of the film and had nothing to do with it, everything will be fine. He was fairly surprised when producer Martin Poll and writer Larry Cohen filed a law suit against 20th Century Fox for alleged plagiarism. They claim that their script yet to be produced was copied. Indeed, the two scripts bore many similarities, but these are elements added to the film and were not in any way found in Moore’s comics. Due to the lawsuit, Alan Moore had to testify in a deposition. The experience, he described, is incomparable and shockingly painful. As if the misery was not enough, Fox settled the case, signaling to Moore that it was an admission of guilt, something he was very sure he has no involvement.

When “V for Vendetta” was made into a film, producer Joel Silver stated to the press that fellow producer Larry Wachowski had talked with Alan Moore, and that Moore was excited about the project. But according to Moore, he adamantly refused to be part of anything with films, and still wasn’t interested in Hollywood. Alan Moore wanted a public retraction and an apology. While he got an apology from Silver, who appears also been deceived by Wachowski, there never was a public retraction. Aside from this, Moore claims that the comic book was specifically about anarchy and fascism. Nowhere in the movie was these two things even seen or mentioned. Clearly, the adaptation of the comic book into a film reinvents Moore’s work into something totally different, something Moore would have not created and would definitely not want to be credited with.

The Watchmen graphic novel is being adapted into a film, and is set for release this 2009. Everybody can understand the reluctance and displeasure by Alan Moore. It is bad enough that he doesn’t get paid for his work, now he gets his name attached to work inherently at odds with what and who Alan Moore is.

Batman Comics

Knowing that you need to better empathise this topic I recommend that you take Five minutes to read what we have to say. For people there are many different forms of reading material. These meter reading materials can be thought of as non-fictional and fictional forms of reading matter. In the invented form comic books like Batman comics are a firm staple for people of unlike ages.

Batman was first introduced to the public by Investigator Comic in their book number 27. The character of Batman was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger. As the up-to-date crime fighter Batman was a huge success. For this grounds District of Columbia comics released the Batman comics as a separate funny book title in 1940. Since that period Batman comics have remained a favorite.

While the Batman comics have earned this crime fighter a place in the annals of fiction super heroes there have been many occasions where the character of Batman has been changed or revamped to fit in with the current trends and ideas. An example of this can be seen during the early years of the Batman comics.

As many of the comics of during the 1939 to 1949 period were pictured as pulp fiction the Batman of that period was presumption many of the traits that for that time. To make the character more naturalistic Batman Comics showed Batman armed combat his enemies as a vigilante Using only his battle skills, his strength and his intellect.

Dissimilar the other super heroes Batman was not presumption any super powers or special abilities. He was portrayed as a man who was driven to fight law-breaking in his way but one who still respects the laws of his home city of Gotham. In many of the Batman comics Batman is shown as a understood and grim crime fighter who battles his enemies by himself.

To make batman’s character seem more human the creators of the serial publication subsequently added other characters to the Batman comics. For most of the history of Batman his buddy Robin is shown armed combat alongside of Batman.

Later additions to the cast of the Batman comics are Batgirl who is shown as POLICE Commissioner Gordon’s girl Barbara, and Batwoman. The versatile villains who appear in the Batman comics are also well known.The names of the Penguin, the Riddler, Catwoman and even the Joker are ones that we recognize.

While many changes have been brought to the Dark Knight Batman comics are still comics that are read by many people. The versatile Batman movies that many of us have seen are a testament to the popularity of this superhero and the ever growth legion of Batman fans.

The Birth And Rise Of Marvel Comics Ultimate Line

What does a comic publishing company do when their continuity is convoluted and they need to reinvigorate their main lines and gain new readers and interest for their characters all over again, but they don't want to change the regular line? Create a new line of course! And thus marvel comics ultimate line was conceived and implemented, and has enjoyed monumental success.

Launched in the year 2000 with one title, Ultimate Spider-Man, marvel comics ultimate line intended to take marvel's most popular characters back to day one and reimagine them to attract new readers to the fold. In doing so, they updated events and colloquialisms and slang, and so forth to be more accessible to readers today. A year later, two more books in the marvel comics ultimate line were launched, Ultimate X-Men and The Ultimates, the marvel comics ultimate line version of the Avengers. Not too long after those came the first family of marvel comics ultimate line with the Ultimate Fantastic Four.

Not wanting to grow too fast, aside from the occasional team-up book, marvel comics ultimate line was restricted to these four books, which encompassed the main four properties at marvel. Some of the books were darker, more realistic and more mature, like The Ultimates, while others were more kid-friendly and fun, like Ultimate Spider-Man. In fact, the popularity of Ultimate Spider-Man is what rocketed marvel comics ultimate line to critical acclaim. After years of lackluster Spider-Man titles in the main marvel universe (referred to as the 616), this new book brought back the fun and innocence of the character that everyone originally fell in love with back in the 70s. And with the superstar creative team of Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley, who worked on the book together for over 100 consecutive issues, the book couldn't go wrong.

Though the Ultimates was plagued with lateness, the other books continued on and readers continued to flock to the new marvel comics ultimate line. It was here that they found the kinds of stories that they longed for in the 616. Overnight, the marvel comics ultimate line had breathed new life into marvel characters and interest for them. It also showed marvel what fans wanted, and though it hasn't always been carried over, some of that same creativity has been applied to the 616 in hopes (to some degree of success) that it too would be reinvigorated and gain new interest.

I have a Spider-Man comic book question. Can someone explain the Symbiote situation going on?

I know about Venom and Carnage. But what is the deal with Toxin and Anti-venom? I stopped reading Marvel a few years ago and I saw some brief commentary on a blog. Anyone have the inside scoop with this thing?

eddie brock (the original venom) had cancer so he sold his symbiote to mac gargan (scorpion) who is now the new venom. the carnage symiote (before being torn apart in space by the sentry) gave birth to a new symbiote,the toxin symbiote, which it hated because it was not a killer, attached itself to a new york city cop pat mulligan and turned him into a super-hero the toxin,which during the civil war has joined the initiative.

eddie brock gets his cancer cured by mister negative and his old symbiote tries to bond with him but doesnt take. this causes his white blood cells to bond with peices of the symbiote and turns him into the anti venom. he is now a vigilante super-hero who teams up with spider man and the punisher

Proper Photo Storage Boxes Help To Preserve Your Fine Art Prints

When you have a lot of money tied up in fine art photographs, it makes sense to take every precaution available to preserve and protect those photos.  If you have irreplaceable photos, such as those from major family events such as weddings and graduations, you will also be concerned with conserving them in optimal condition for years to come.  For this purpose, photo storage boxes are available.  Acid free, archival photo storage boxes offer your fine artwork the storage protection it needs for times when the artwork is not being displayed.

What should I look for in a high-quality photograph storage box?

•    Made of acid-free materials

Acid free photo storage boxes are preferred for fine art storage.  Airborne pollutants can damage the surface of the artwork, and thus acid free photo storage boxes can be used to neutralize those pollutants.  

•    Constructed from archival quality products
