he was just an extra, but its really funny how he comes out at every movie.

Back in Time With Counter Clock Records

As we all enjoy the vinyl record revival, there is another aspect to this phenomenon that sometimes gets overlooked: the forgotten 45 rpm records from years past. Sure, there are some mainstream artists, punk rockers and indie musicians who have found this audio medium to their liking, it is a marvelous way to not only give their fans what they want (the music), but also create a collectible as well.

Another medium from the past has gone through some major changes in recent years. Remember when AM radio dominated the air waves? And then another format in the 70's added even more alternatives for music lovers -FM radio. Now we have satellite radio and another inventive medium, the Internet radio station.

One Internet radio station in particular has been able to combine the aforementioned 45 rpm records and the Internet to form Counter Clock Radio (http://www.live365.com/stations/counter_clock?play) and Counter Clock Records (http://stores.ebay.com/Counter-Clock-Records). The business is the brainchild of the wife and husband team of Jane and Norm Geddis of Mission Viejo, California who have developed a 'play what we find' programming style that is very unique and allows their listeners an eclectic array of music genres to listen to. I had the opportunity to speak with the developers of this novel concept, let's learn more about Counter Clock Records and Counter Clock Radio:

Obviously you have a love for vinyl- what is it about records that make them so appealing to you?

Norm: "They're round, like wheels. It's by far the best use of man's first invention. CD's never felt quite the same. Downloads are radio plus labor. I'm a decade past being impressed with myself for getting software to work after an evening playing around with my computer."

Jane: "I like the built-in nostalgia value of vinyl - whether it's a 1964 Top 40 one-hit wonder or a super rare Private Press Psych LP. It felt like a part of me died and was buried when CD's became the standard. With downloads, it's like the moss has grown over the headstones."

How long have you been online/ selling on ebay and what are your thoughts about the fee changes and the overall operations of this online giant?

Norm: "We started Counter-Clock Records in July of '07. Or rather, I started selling on eBay about that time, just 45's that I was done loving on, and then both us created the store and glued these other parts (blog and radio station) to it."

"As far as those changes everyone talks about, I came into the middle of that and, speaking just for me, I'm a part of Counter-Clock Records. eBay is just the venue, the shopping center where our store is located. No matter where one has their store, there's not a merchant on this planet, or likely any other, who isn't complaining about the rents. It's not a complaint I'm going to pass along to my customers."

When did you decide to go 'online' with the Live365 radio station?

Norm: "The station has been running since March of '07 which was several months before we opened the store."

What kind of fan base do you have, what kind of records/music do you play?

Jane: "Our base is our customers who have found our station. The station is very close to exactly how we want it to be, with short music news segments and trivia, so now we have something unique and something we're proud of. It's time to let everyone know. We play what we find. I call the programming style Accidental Nostalgia."

My readers love the "Top 5 vinyl record sales" feature each week. How long have you been doing this? Have you noticed any specific patterns- what sells the best (and who) and what is the most expensive record that you have ever documented on the list?

Norm: "I began the blog about the same time I started the radio station. The "store" so to speak began when I put a few records up on my eBay account in July of last year."

"The most expensive record I've documented was the White Album that sold last week for $30k, which is saying a lot for vinyl collectibles in this economy. Unfortunately I flubbed that one and it got left off that week's list. The seller had listed it in "Music Memorabilia" and I keep my eyes on the "Record" category. I also didn't keep an eye on your blog that week, Robert, or I would have caught it - the problem of selling records and writing about them during the holiday season. So I did a mea culpa entry on that one so it makes it on the Record Store Day year-end list."

I love listening to the station- your format and genres of music are very eclectic. Where do you get the music and how do you decide what you want to play?

Jane: "We buy collections from individuals, closed record stores, from eBay as well. Mostly the 45's speak to me. By that I mean that when I look through a stack of records I sense what's interesting, unusual, weird . . . just enjoyable. Norm has an encyclopedia of music history in his head, but if we just went on that alone we'd sound like tons of other stations. So clairvoyance plays its part."

Do you have any plans to add DJ's to the mix?

Jane: "A podcast is in the works. But it may not happen unless the Earth starts spinning slower."

What are the future plans for the station and Counter Clock Records?

Norm: "Next year is going to be about more of everything. We have lots of inventory to love on and get out there to the world. The backbone of vinyl records is the community record store. The Internet cannot deliver that. Counter Clock Records is something to come home to, but not to replace the chill up your spine dirty tile smell of your record store."

What do you think of the 'vinyl revival' and where do you see vinyl in the next ten years?

Jane: "I think the vinyl revival is great! I also think it was inevitable. Tens of millions of us who love vinyl are either retiring or have more time on our hands, and whether you have a little or a lot of money, there's something for everyone. Plus, it seems that even though they're not buying "our music," young adults and teens are discovering that there is something more to vinyl than the downloads. And getting squeezed in the middle are CD's. It seemed only a matter of time before these two groups converged and the music market opened up to let us back in."

Norm: "I'm not a money guru and this isn't investment advice. However, as my grandmother used to say during tough times, "there'll always be somebody with money." And, like during the seventies and early nineties, traditional investments are not attractive. Comic book values skyrocketed in the seventies, as with sports cards in the early nineties. I think it's about to be vinyl's day in the sun."

Do you have a Top Ten list of your favorite 45's and or favorite recording artists?

Jane: "I'll do artists-Etta James, Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell, The Band, Bill Monroe, Renaissance, Mazzy Star, Opal, Joan Armatrading, CSNY."

Norm: "45's for me- Mixed Feelings "Sha La La"/"Love Will Find A Way," Moody Blues "Go Now"/"Lose Your Money," Small Faces "Itchycoo Park"/"I'm Only Dreaming," Sandi Sheldon "You're Gonna Make Me Love You"/"Baby You're Mine," Pink Floyd "Point Me At The Sky"/"Careful With That Axe Eugene," Olivia Tremor Control "California Demise" EP, Hedgehoppers Anonymous "It's Good News Week"/"Afraid Of Love," Barbara Lewis "Baby I'm Yours"/"I Say Love," Denny Laine "It's So Easy"/Listen To Me"/"I'm Looking For Someone To Love," The Intruders "Every Day Is A Holiday"/"Old Love" and probably a hundred others."

So, if you are looking for some great old obscure rock and roll, one-hit wonders and soulful R&B, drop by Counter Clock Radio and Counter Clock Records and give them a spin. Your ears will love what you hear.

An Interview With Koko Dozo: Bringing a Little Madness - and Lots of Teamwork - Into the Mix

The rock and roll super group - a group made of musicians who are well-known for being in other groups, or, solo stars who band together into one entity, like the comic book heroes X-men or The Avengers - has a long history in rock music. The super group Blind Faith was comprised of guitar giant Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker from Cream, joined with Steve Winwood of Traffic. Clapton also joined with legendary Allman Brother Duane Allman and super drummer Jim Gordon to form Derek and the Dominoes, who recorded the classic rock album 'Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.'

Oftentimes in jazz, musicians from different groups (who are great solo artists in their own right) will come together and create great music. However, this is not always the case. Groups made up of great performers - those used to working alone or being the "star" - can sometimes be less than the sum of their parts, as egos clash and the group becomes like a bad basketball team, where everyone wants to score and nobody wants to pass or play defense. Koko Dozo, however, is a dream team. Each member of the group, which includes Polarity/1, Rubio and Amy Douglas, is an equal contributor, with the entire group utilizing each member's skills and talents. Once more, there are no egos clashing. Quite the opposite occurs, as the members provide support and encouragement for one another. On the group's debut 'Illegal Space Aliens,' Koko Dozo shows that individual and group expression can meld into one, and - just like a good jazz band, baseball team or this year's Boston Celtics - can result in something even greater than the sum of its parts.

[Mark Kirby] What kind of music was played in your homes when you were growing up?

[Polarity/1] I started off with my dad's records. My earliest faves were Cab Calloway, Tito Rodriguez and other salsa music, Elvis, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Then there was the radio and television shows like American Bandstand, Soul Train and the Ed Sullivan Show.

[Rubio] My parents were fundamentalists and went through this period of being afraid of having any secular music in the house, so for a while we had nothing but this old 8-track with Pat Boone and Bob Dylan's one Christian album. No, I'm not making this up. I used to stay up nights just surfing the dial on this crappy transistor radio I had and absorbing everything I could get my ears on.

[Amy Douglas] I come from a family that played instruments. Growing up, I was fortunate to have parents that liked music quite a bit. My dad was all about jazz - Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Brubeck, Duke, Bird and Diz, etc. - so I get my love of jazz from him and my grandparents. My mom was a huge fan of artists like Carol King, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Jim Croce and Elton John (still one of my personal heroes to this day). She was also a huge fan of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Temptations, Philly soul, and anything Gamble and Huff touched, from Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes to the Spinners and all in-between. She liked Black music in general. Also heavily on rotation in the house growing up was Aretha Franklin, who served as my initial influence into opening up my head and wailing away, and Stevie Wonder, who was one of my greatest influences of all.

[Mark Kirby] What incident or moment ignited your passion to perform or otherwise get into music?

[Polarity/1] When I was in high school I discovered Brazilian music, Appalachian folk, Eric Dolphy, 16th century Japanese court music, Bob Dylan and Mahavishnu Orchestra. My thing with Dylan got me to buy a guitar so I could express my rage over the inconveniences of life on earth. Within weeks I was writing clueless protest songs about important political issues I never bothered to read about.

[Rubio] I've had a passion for music as long as I can remember. I used to go nuts over it even as an infant apparently. I started taking lessons at age four. When I was 11, I formally made a decision to dedicate myself to music. I was classically trained on piano and organ as a kid. As a teenager, I started getting heavily into metal and prog rock and things like that.

[Amy Douglas] I think growing up as a child in the 1970s served as a constant source of inspiration and was a catalyst. From just listening constantly to my parents' music, and then turning on the TV or radio, it seems like virtually EVERYTHING influenced me. But if I had to narrow it down to a few choice moments, I'd say playing Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life," seeing Chaka Khan on Soul Train, seeing Bowie everywhere on TV, hearing all the Beatles' albums, and most important, hearing Led Zeppelin, my favorite band of all time. Between the TV shows Soul Train, Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, there was no shortage of good stuff to draw on. I think the combination of hearing all this stuff as a child was like a bomb going off. Certainly, I take almost all my visual cues from Donna Summer, P-Funk and Chaka.

[Mark Kirby] Describe your musical backgrounds. Did you study formally in school? Or take lessons?

[Polarity/1] When I was 14 I bought a plywood guitar with a book of tunes that had chord diagrams, and then I starting writing my own songs. A couple of years later I took a few lessons and learned how to play major and minor seventh chords so I could add some jazz and bossa nova flavor to my songs.

I spent a semester at Berklee School of Music in Boston, which was a weird move, being that I couldn't functionally read music and my brain isn't wired for formal learning. But I could write notation a little bit and tried to prove that I was Berklee-worthy by hot-dogging the homework projects - like scoring an arrangement of Monk's "Epistrophy in 7/4," which nobody could play. I was redeemed a few years ago when I notated a 7/4 thing for Pete McCann and Gregg Bendian to play on "Munton's Revenge" on the Polarity/1 'Speechless' album. They nailed it pretty quickly. What was good about the year at Berklee was that even though I couldn't learn in a normal way, [with] what they were throwing at me, I was able to sort of "visualize" all these concepts like chord functions and voicings. It all came in handy much later on in unexpected ways when I would create quite complex things without "knowing how" and be taken seriously. In that sense I've had a very real musical training.

[Rubio] I had lessons up until I was 16, mostly classical music. When I was younger, we had a deal where I got free lessons in return for performing for Kawai, showcasing their instruments in malls and conventions. Because of that, I had some performance training as well. By my 17th birthday I was playing full-time with bands and earning my keep.

[Amy Douglas] I started doing music from age six onward. I first discovered I could sing when my elementary school teacher wrote my mom a letter saying, "Ask Amy to sing for you sometime." My grandmother taught me piano initially, and from there I took lessons. From 6th grade on, I was one of those disgusting "Music Big Concert School" kids. I started learning music theory in junior high and I got a lot of credit from the state of New York, won the Louis Armstrong and Eubie Blake music scholarships and then went to study Jazz Theory and Composition at New York University. UUUUUUGH.

[Mark Kirby] What were some of your earliest musical experiences?

[Polarity/1] My earliest gigging experiences in high school were great antidotes for bad looks and bad conversation-starting skills. Music-making has been all good except for one rough period where I got a real-world lesson about where my strengths and weaknesses were. My songs started off in folk and rock. Then they got jazzy and funky. Then I wanted to bring elements of the late John Coltrane, Mingus and Mahavishnu. So I created a band with all jazz guys instead of folk-rockers which was most[ly] cool - except that I wasn't that kind of player with that kind of training. Since my only interest in the guitar was for songwriting, I had no chops and couldn't contribute much on the instrumentals the other guys were writing. And they needed a serious jazz/metal guitar player. So I got fired from my own band. It triggered a move into a radically different direction, where I had to start from scratch and discover what my own creative process was, make a commitment to it and then succeed on my own terms. And with that kind of focus, I found that there were a whole lot of different things that I did really well with my own vision and method and developed big chops with it.

[Rubio] It was rough from age 11 to 16 because I basically had to disappear into a hole and hibernate in order to switch from organ to piano, and didn't perform live at all during that time. It was a definite case of withdrawal. My first few rock bands were rough, too. I was nicknamed "Wendel" because that was Gomer Pyle's actual first name in the TV show. I'm sorry to say that at the time the name fit perfectly. I was more than a bit naive. I'm very grateful for those times, though, because I learned a lot very quickly.

[Amy Douglas] I played my first pro gig at age 12 and did my first pro session at 13. I told my parents I didn't want to go to school anymore. From then onwards, it got darker. My first pro gig was at a supper club on Long Island. Between dishes of steak and shrimp, I sang a combination of jazz standards and disco classics. It was a blast.

[Mark Kirby] Describe your individual musical journeys from the first bands to Koko Dozo.

[Polarity/1] I started off writing songs until I hooked up with the SIM (Studio For Interrelated Media) department at Mass Art (Massachusetts College of Art) when I was discovering Cage, Xenakis, George Crumb, Joan LaBarbera, Steve Reich and others. I made a decision to not use melody, harmony or rhythm in any way that resembled songs or jazz. And since I was also a visual artist at that time, the art scene provided venues for this new direction. So my visual stuff, music and lyric-writing got re-channeled into performance art and composing for choreographers and experimental theater. I also formed a group called Vocal Repercussions that did totally improvised vocals-only performances, where abstract vocal sounds morphed into words, free-associated texts, rhythms and harmonies. Then I moved to NYC and got obsessed with groove. I studied African drumming, played in samba bands and had a hip-hop thing with rapper D.A.V. called Medicine Crew. Hip-hop was an easy transition because I was already into looping and collaging, but in an abstract mode, and my performance poetry worked in a rap format. I was always into groove since I was little - funk, salsa, African drumming, calypso, samba and reggae. A couple years later I got back into songwriting and all that stuff merged into songs and electronica when I became Polarity/1. And that led to film scoring and collaborating with Rubio on Audioplasm, which led to Koko Dozo. And recently I circled back to the art scene, scoring for Battery Dance Company and Quorum Ballet from Lisbon.

[Rubio] My very first band I was in was ruled with an iron fist by this absolute tyrant and it was a real wakeup call. Those were also very fun times, of course. After a couple years in my hometown of Winnipeg, Canada, I moved to Toronto for six years before coming to NYC in 1997. I've done just about every kind of gig you can think of in that time, both live and in the studio.

[Amy Douglas] I had been gigging steadily in my own bands, ranging from funk to rock. I was part of a group of downtown artists known as the "Homocorp" scene. I was [also] a part-time member of the Squeezebox Band - the same Squeezebox they recently released a film about at this year's Tribeca Film Festival - and basically spent my 20s either gigging, doing sessions or hanging with drag queens and getting into trouble.

[Mark Kirby] How did the three of you meet and get together?

[Rubio] I had met Polar in 2003 through a mutual friend, a drummer called Curtis Watts, with whom we had a mutual interest in samba. We hit it off and started working together sporadically. In the fall of 2005 we decided to completely redesign Polar's studio with my help and work on each other's projects. That blossomed into us working together on some production stuff, mainly soundtracks for documentaries, and an instrumental collaboration called Audioplasm.

[Polarity/1] Rubio and I were working on the Heavy Meadow album at the same time he was working with Amy in her "Red Hot Mama" show. He suggested the three [of us] get together to see if we could come up with something interesting.

[Amy Douglas] I had a show called "Red Hot Mama," which was a rock vaudeville show, and I had hired Rubio as the keyboardist, and we really hit it off. When the show folded, he introduced me to Polar, the two of them having done a project called Audioplasm. I am way happier in Koko Dozo than I've been in just about anything I've ever done. We got together on a super hot summer day in 2007 and realized we had a great capacity to make incredible music based on our collective musical passions and influences, which also include a group devotion to Brazilian music, Afrobeat, and Latin music, so we really had quite a stewpot brewin' by the time we started to write songs.

[Mark Kirby] How did you arrive at the name Koko Dozo?

[Amy Douglas] At the risk of hurting myself by patting myself on the back, I have to take the credit for it. My ex-boyfriend had mentioned wanting to do an avant-garde project and he threw out Koko Dozo as a trial name. When we were thinking about names, I threw it out there, and the guys liked it. I think it's fab. [My ex-boyfriend] did so little for me while we were together, [so] at least he gave the band a great name.

[Mark Kirby] What is the musical concept of the band?

[Amy Douglas] It's a really huge one. First and foremost it's to virtually force people to have to really listen to what we do, and to help audiences that have been pandered to and been reduced to some sort of lowest common denominator grow some brain cells back. The music is obviously a ton of fun, it puts you in the mood to do some serious dancing and there's more than a healthy dose of silly swirling around in the mix. But really listen to the words and you'll hear that we have some deep issues we're struggling with and we do address them in our songs, ranging from our distrust of our government, to the polarization of culture in our home of New York City and a whole bunch of other things. Our musical concept is to shrink the globe as well; the internet has made the world a smaller place and we wanted to find a way to fuse cultures, languages, styles and influences together in a way that reeks of New York City life, but will appeal to an audience that is truly global.

[Rubio] Generally, Polar handles the arrangements and the drum and percussion elements. I come up with harmonic ideas, play most of the keyboard/bass-type things and mix the tracks. Amy is the voice of the project and handles melodies. Obviously, there is a lot of overlap. There is one song I arranged and produced ("Boomchi"). Polar and I each do one lead vocal ("Kokodozonomics" and "The Heart," respectively). There are songs where Amy did the chord structure and played keyboards. Polar is very avant-garde and always pushing the envelope. Amy is very melodic and tends to create things that are catchy and mass-appealing. I'm kind of in the middle.

[Polarity/1] We have an open source attitude about music. Between us, we've worked just about every genre category there is and we don't feel any compulsion to restrict where we go. Each song has a strong identity of its own but they all sound like Koko Dozo. Conventional wisdom dictates that our way of working will guarantee that we'll never find an audience. But we know that's bullshit. The post-corporate online music business has made it okay for people to trust their intuitions about the music they discover. An amazing variety of people are responding. We're reaching young electro heads, world-beaters, dance-clubbers, boomers, electronica geeks, and po-po-pomo gonzoid hairy-backed noiz gimps living in the basement of the basement on diets of sticky buns and penis butter and toe jam sandwiches. The parents and the kiddies like us too. And we write in different languages (English, Spanish and Portuguese) which reaches out even further. Also we have this whole bargain-basement-space vibe that makes things really fun.

[Mark Kirby] What is the story behind the Sun Ra-esque (a new word!) dress and alien mythology?

[Polarity/1] Here's the story: we came from outer space and landed on Earth to exploit its resources - and for other reasons that we'd rather not discuss. We're from the low-rent part of the universe where you wear whatever is lying around in the alley on garbage pickup day. That, coincidentally, is the same galaxy where Sun Ra came from.

[Amy Douglas] {Laughter} Well...the word "alien" permeates much of what we do and we like to riff on the term. Alien, as we mean it internally, is the feeling of not being comfortable in one's skin, feeling out of synch with the world around you, feeling like the constant outsider. And we decided to really play with the word, and we decided that a space age "alien" theme would suit us wackos pretty well! Besides, it gives me an excuse to wear wigs and glitter, which I feel I was born to do.

[Rubio] We really wanted to put the fun and craziness back in music. Too many projects take themselves too seriously these days, which is BEYOND ironic.

[Mark Kirby] Describe the writing, recording and producing process for this CD. Were you all in the same studio at the same time?

[Polarity/1] Since we work in my studio, I'm there for the whole process. Generally, I show Amy and Rubio a track that I think would work for Koko Dozo. It might be just a sketch, almost complete, or anything in between. I might have complete lyrics as well ("Face On The Dancefloor," "Kokodozonomics") or just a rough idea for lyrics that Amy and I will collaborate on ("Shine"). Or Amy and/or Rubio will take one of my tracks and turn it into a song ("Second Time," "The Heart"). Sometimes Amy has a song and I build a track around her chord changes, melody and vibe and help with the lyrics ("Down"). Rubio and Amy wrote "Boomchi" together and Rubio produced that track.

Rubio is the guy with the engine-ear. He comes in when a track is pretty much laid out and starts tweaking things. Then he'll add his keyboard solos, sometimes bass and the more harmonically dense keyboard stuff. I do keyboard parts that don't require big chops. Then Amy comes in and we track vocals. Rubio and I finish the mixes with Rubio in the big chair. Joe Lambert masters everything at Trutone Studios. He's done all the Polarity/1 stuff and Heavy Meadow too. Lately Amy has been playing some keyboard parts.

[Rubio] As far as recording, we were generally all there. I personally NEVER record final voices without someone else in the room to give me a sense of perspective. Polar did a lot of editing on his own but often that job fell to me as well. The mixes were generally done with Polar and me, and we would send roughs to Amy for her input.

[Mark Kirby] What is your live show like? Is there a full band?

[Amy Douglas] It's a full-on brigade of madness! We operate as a trio, currently using our tracks and the addition of live keys and guitar, bass and percussion.

[Rubio] I would love to have a live band, but right now circumstances and logistics just don't allow it. The three of us do perform live, though. Polar plays electronic drums, guitar and hand percussion, I play keyboards live and we all sing. We use versions of the tracks that are customized for live shows, so what you hear on stage is not necessarily exactly what you'd hear on the studio version.

[Polarity/1] Our shows are fun for us, and I suppose audiences love to watch grown people making funny noises up there and bouncing around like homeless space mutants. Amy's wigs and Rubio's Viking helmet are worth the price of admission. And gazing at my psychedelic death-ray yarmulke is a life-affirming way to blow off shabbos.

Places to go during Advent and Christmas -- recommendations by Peter Menkin

Introduction to Advent & Christmas events

The Christmas season has an ethos of joy and celebration, an ethos of well-being in its statement of goodwill to men, and peace on earth. What an odd celebration, and so popular in California and the United States, throughout the Western World, too, of course. Who does not know this? Everyone likes the winter festival Christmas in some sense or another. It is about love, after all, and so the Christian believes. The music celebrates this love of mankind by the great God of history through the birth of his son Jesus Christ.

Writing in her recent book, Camaldoli Benedictine Oblate Paula Huston says of the kind of love Christmas and its ethos of spirit offers:   …Jesus puts it very simply;   And though not specifically about Christmas, per se, the words speak to the spirit.   They will know we are Christians by our love. C.S. Lewis insists that we are almost never converted through logic but instead “infected by a love that moves us so powerfully we can’t help but succumb. A modern spiritual writer, Donald Nichols, reiterates the central importance of love to evangelization when he refers to the “theology of faces,” or the look of love that says everything about the faith behind it. Our society, however, is characterized instead by its hyperindividualism and its intense need for “personal space” and privacy. We feel that we are doing well simply by avoiding conflict. The notion of actually loving one another sounds either idealistic or uncomfortably communal. We much prefer our separateness, even as Christians—hence our many sects and denominations.   Though her book is titled, "forgiveness: following Jesus into radical loving,"  Paraclete Press, the theme of the book is an indirect remark on God’s willingness to offer man a New Testament, a new covenant of which a part is the old-new idea of forgiveness. This is a season when we can forgive one another, when the heart warms, when the brightness is brought into the darkness of winter.

These various events around the area give testimony and celebration, entertainment and festivity and even fun to the season of charity and good will to all. Come enjoy this wonderful season, this Holiday, this gift of the winter celebration in various places: mostly through music and some through dance. The Jewish year, too, in its winter, has the celebration of Hanukkah. Note the YouTube video below of Pacific BoyChoir’s singing a Hanukkah song in this article. Nonetheless, for the record, one noted member of Jewish Reform Temple El-Emanuel’s staff recommends a comedy event whichKung Pao spokeswoman says of the comedy Kung Pao event in describing it, “That's what my event is all about. Escaping Christmas, enjoying comedy, a sense of belonging at a time that is alienating for many...”   Please find these paragraph’s of text recommending places to go worthwhile and helpful in the season this year, Christmas 2009.

San Francisco Theological Seminary

In a Press Notice, this writer learned of an excellent place for musical celebration, San Francisco Theological Seminary’s (SFTS) 35th annual Lessons & Carols service Friday, Dec. 4, and Saturday Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. in Stewart Memorial Chapel on the San Anselmo campus.   The candlelight service observes Advent's time of preparation and the coming of the Christ Child. It is not only a longstanding tradition among SFTS faculty, staff and students. The Notice continues:   This year’s theme comes from Luke 1:30-31: The angel said, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High …”   Admission is free, but there will be a freewill offering. Everyone is welcome, but seating is limited, so SFTS encourages those planning to attend to arrive early. Shuttle van service will be available.

Doctor Daniel Hoggatt, Musical Director of the program, speaks to this year’s event: “This Lessons & Carols used to be more a seminary community event, but in the last 13 years it has been more the Seminary’s gift to the community.   “There are 8 lessons and accompanied Carols by the congregation and choir.   “There is also the wonderful Dobbins Memorial Pipe Organ (Balcom Vaughan) that is in Stewart Chapel. Stewart Chapel is usually used for services four times a week. I am very, very fortunate here to be the musician at SFTS because we have two beautiful chapels."   Doctor Hoggatt explains:   It is a service that people come to whether Christian or not because it is a wonderful way to kick off the Christmas season with a warm evening. I have Jewish friends, Buddhist friends, and it is a wonderful, magical evening for all.   It is a choir of 30 voices that come from the seminary community, and the community at large in southern Marin County. We do a variety of Carols from over 2,000 year history.   Doctor. Daniel Hoggatt made the choices.

                Nutcracker at San Francisco Ballet

Nutcracker comes alive one hour prior to curtain as costumed characters greet and have their pictures taken with children and families. Plus, the first 500 children to arrive receive a special gift! At intermission, everyone will be treated to juice and cookies.   So says San Francisco Ballet website.   The Ballet touts:   A wonderful Christmas event, Create Magical Memories  This holiday season, you and your loved ones deserve something special – a wondrous experience that evokes joy & elevates your spirit to new heights. Whether continuing a valued tradition or discovering the magic of this beloved holiday classic for the first time – San Francisco Ballet’s Nutcracker is sure to leave you with a sense of warmth and treasured memories that will last a lifetime.

Nutcracker Story   ACT 1 In his shop on a foggy Christmas Eve, a toy maker, Drosselmeyer, puts the finishing touches on a magical nutcracker, a gift for his relatives, the Stahlbaum family, whose home he will visit that evening. Customers drop by, searching for last-minute Christmas gifts. Outside the Stahlbaum house, as people hurry home to their Christmas revelries, Drosselmeyer arrives with his beautifully wrapped gift. In the sitting room of the Stahlbaum house, a tree trimming is under way. Clara and Fritz, followed by their friends, arrive downstairs to see the tree lighted, for the very first time in their lives, by electric lights! The children dance with glee. Soon it is time to open gifts. As the children settle down to play with their presents, Dr. Stahlbaum invites his guests to dance. Clara joins the adults. Drosselmeyer—"Uncle Drosselmeyer" to the Stahlbaums—arrives and entertains the families with magic. While Clara remains captivated by the dolls, Fritz makes a pest of himself. Uncle Drosselmeyer opens his specially wrapped gift for the family and presents to them the magical nutcracker doll. Clara, delighted, dances with the nutcracker. Fritz looks on with envy, then grabs the nutcracker, which falls and breaks. Uncle Drosselmeyer bandages the doll and returns it to Clara, who plays with it quietly. As a close to the evening's festivities, the revered Stahlbaum Grandparents begin their annual holiday dance. All join in. The hour is late, and the guests begin their goodbyes. Fritz and Clara go upstairs to their bedrooms, and the house quiets down. Soon, Clara descends the steps, searching for her nutcracker doll. As the clock strikes 12, she settles on the sofa and falls asleep with the doll in her arms. As Clara dreams, her mind whirls with the memories of the evening. Deep within her dream, Uncle Drosselmeyer appears and mends the nutcracker doll. Clara wakens into her dream, and her house begins to change around her. The Christmas tree grows large and wondrous. Then mice appear, frightening Clara. But magically, her nutcracker doll fends off the mice. The Nutcracker summons the toy soldiers from the cupboard, and a battle ensues. The fierce Mouse King arrives and engages in a duel with the Nutcracker. Clara bravely aids the Nutcracker, who, though victorious, is overcome by exhaustion from the battle. Clara is worried, but Uncle Drosselmeyer consoles her, then transforms the Nutcracker into a dashing Prince. Clara and the Prince embark together on a magical journey through the Land of Snow. The Snow King and Snow Queen arrive and welcome Clara and the Prince. As snow continues to fall, snowflakes begin to dance. The King and Queen invite Clara and the Prince into the sleigh and send them off to their next adventure. ACT 2 The scene opens in the garden of a Crystal Palace where ladybugs, dragonflies, and butterflies dance. The Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes Clara and the Prince and asks them to tell her about their adventure that brought them to her world. The Prince recounts his tale of war with the Mouse King and describes Clara's bravery. The Sugar Plum Fairy commands a festival, filled with dancing, to honor her guests. The celebration begins with Spanish flair. Exotic Arabians, whirling dancers from China, and lovely French Mirlitons perform for the guests. Sharing in the festivities are Russian entertainers and the famous Madame Du Cirque, who reveals many small surprises, including a dancing bear! In the final celebratory dance, the Sugar Plum Fairy joins in a glorious waltz with her court of flowers, dazzling Clara and the Prince. As the festivities draw to a close, the Sugar Plum Fairy and Uncle Drosselmeyer grant Clara her greatest Christmas wish and transform her into a beautiful woman to dance in the arms of her Prince. It is Christmas morning. Clara awakens, the nutcracker safe in her arms. SF Ballet (Courtesy of San Francisco Ballet).

Calvary Presbyterian Church, San Francisco Bach Choir

The San Francisco Bach Choir website offers this welcome: Welcome the season with our traditional blend of charming carols and majestic works from early German masters Michael Praetorius and Heinrich Schütz. Multiple choirs will surround you with glorious music—both ancient and familiar—and brighten the winter darkness with candlelight, processions and joyful singing. Invite your friends and order early! with Erica Schuller, soprano Saturday, December 5, 8PM / Sunday, December 6, 4PM
Calvery Presbyterian Church,  Fillmore & Jackson, SF

Sharon Gustavson of the San Francisco Bach Choir, calls this an evening of "majestic music." She states the defining element of the choir's work this way,and in so doing emphasizes how specific this evening is to the kind of music San Francisco Bach Choir performs:  "This is our niche work." She adds, "This is one of our traditional concerts."

    Grace Cathedral Christmas

Grace Cathedral announces on their website: “Bring the whole family for a merry sing-along at Grace Cathedral! Join the festive Pacific Boychoir in singing your favorite carols of the holiday season. There will also be a special surprise guest in red velvet!”   Spokeswoman for Grace Cathedral tells, Pacific Boychoir played at last year’s Family sing-along.   So the ensemble is back after 2008, and the Spokeswoman adds, “The event sold out in 2008, so we added a second show in 2009, on Dec. 12 and Dec. 19. I did not take an audience poll, so can’t say for sure whether the choir made it a hit or what the favorite song was. I suspect it was the format of the event that made it successful – it is one-hour in length; it features songs that everyone knows at least the first verse to (& printed lyrics are provided for all songs & verses); and it starts at the family-friendly time of 11 a.m. (before kids’ afternoon naps).”

This quote on the Boychoir:   Based in Oakland, the Pacific Boychoir participates in a very old tradition, as boychoirs have been around for hundreds of years, dating back at least to the fourth century. The chorus was formed in 1998 with 6 boys, and it now includes more than 100 singers from ages 7 to 17. The Pacific Boychoir's reputation for excellence has earned performances with the San Francisco Symphony, the San Francisco Opera, the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, the UC Berkeley and Davis Symphonies, American Bach Soloists, and many others.

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Berkeley, California Bach Society

Be sure to arrive early to get a good seat, so it is recommended by one Church member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Berkeley, who has attended the California Bach Society event.   This year’s event will take place at the Church on December 6, 2009 at 4 p.m, located at 2300 Bancroft Way (at Ellsworth), Berkeley. (Doors open 30 minutes prior to each performance.)   Wieneke Gorter Spokeswoman for the Society reports, “St. Mark's is a pretty church with absolutely wonderful acoustics. We love performing in there. Our concerts at this church attract music lovers of every age and background, but especially people who are interested in choral music and/or early music.”     . The Bach Society website says of the program:   The California Bach Society welcomes the holidays with a program from 17th century Northern Germany.Performed in the order prescribed for Advent Vespers, the 30-voice chamber choir will present a richly varied program of intricate polyphony, hymns, and splendid double choruses. Artistic Director Paul Flight explains: The beauty of this program lies in the contrast between the simple and the complex. On the one hand, we will sing a number of well-known Lutheran hymns. By contrast, the majority of the pieces we will perform are elaborately worked out renditions of these hymn tunes. One can only marvel at the skills of the North German composers, Schütz, Schein, Scheidt, and Praetorius, as they develop every musical possibility inherent in the tune."   A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols Also coming up at St. Mark’s, Berkeley is a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, Sunday, December 20, 2009, 4:30 p.m.   This service was originally instituted at Truro Cathedral in Cornwall, England, based on a medieval vigil service.  It was modified in the early twentieth century by the Very Rev. E.M. Millner-White, dean of King's College Chapel, Cambridge, England.    Since then, it has been sung annually in King's College Chapel on Christmas Eve, and here at St. Mark's since 1942. The service opens with the traditional carol “Once in royal David's city,” a bidding prayer, and the Lord's Prayer.    The story continues with the promise to Abraham, the assurance of the prophet Isaiah, the calling of Mary, the birth of Jesus, and ends with St. John's unfolding of the great mystery of the Incarnation.  Carols, familiar and unfamiliar, are sung throughout the service. The service is held in candlelight and a festive reception follows in Hodgkin Hall.        Kosher Comedy at Christmas in San Francisco   The official press release says of Kung Pao Christmas event, and here it is in part:   Come celebrate Christmas the Jewish Way—in a Chinese restaurant with Jewish comedy. Now celebrating its 17th year, Kung Pao Kosher Comedy continues to provide an answer to the age-old question, “What are Jews supposed to do on Christmas?” What started out as a joke by San Francisco-based Jewish stand-up comic, Lisa Geduldig, has become an institution in San Francisco annually giving 3000 comedy aficionados and those escaping “Christmas-mania” an alternative to Jingle Bells. It’s the Bar Mitzvah you never had—and you don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy it.   Kung Pao Kosher Comedy™ was created in 1993 by accident by comedian Lisa Geduldig, who went to perform outside Northampton, Massachusetts at what she thought was going to be a comedy club. She arrived only to discover that The Peking Garden Club was actually a Chinese Restaurant, not a comedy club. Her ironic experience of telling Jewish jokes at a Chinese restaurant led to the idea behind and creation of Kung Pao.   The event began as a community service for Jews who have been stuck on Christmas with nothing to do but hide under the covers or go to a Chinese restaurant. The audience has expanded to include Chinese-Jewish couples, interfaith ones, singles, families, gays, straights, those far from home, and generally those who not only are seeking an alternative to Christmas alienation but who also like comedy mixed with Chinese food. One of Kung Pao’s claims to fame is that Henny Youngman performed his last shows there, in 1997.     Celebrate Christmas with Chinese food and Jewish comedy. So the website of Kung Pao Kosher Comedy offers. The dates for performance are December 24 through the 27, 2009.

Two of the comedians commented for this writer via email:   Brian Malow was asked:

Why are you doing this at Christmas time?

Well, I'm not a Christian nor have I ever been so you won't find me celebrating Christmas in any sort of traditional manner (for example, frantic last-minute guilt-inspired shopping sprees).  I am Jewish.  What's a Jew to do on Christmas?  If there's not a new Woody Allen movie playing in theaters, what better or more appropriate way to celebrate the season than with copious amounts of Chinese food and Jewish comedy? Plus, I've never worked with Jonathan Katz so I'm really looking forward to it!

Hilary Schwartz was asked:   Why are you doing this at Christmas time?

I'm doing this at Christmas time because my Christian friends asked me to
make other plans. Anyhow, who else but a Jew would work on Christmas?

Punk Rockers and Comic Books

Punk rocker Pete Wentz created a new comic book series that will be launched in September of this year. He has teamed up with Image Comics to produce the miniseries that will be called Fall Out Toy Works. Image Comics is one of the top three biggest publishers in the United States. The series will feature a robot maker, his robot named Tiffany, and a kid wearing a bear suit. The comic was inspired by his bands, Fall Out Boy, lyrics and ideas. The series, more specifically, is related to his song Tiffany Blews. Pete Wentz has big plans for his series. He is planning on using the series to create a starting point for a website, clothing, and toys based on Fall Out Toy Works. He is hoping that at the end of the miniseries, the comic will be considered a graphic novel.

Pete Wentz is the bass guitarist and vocalist for the punk band Fall Out Boy. His talents are not limited just to music. His newest project is the comic book series, but he also works for MTV, is writing a book, and directs music videos. His creative mind is perfect for creating comic books.

Another punk rocker, Gerard Way, is also involved with comics. He pens the series The Umbrella Academy which is partnered with Dark Horse Comics. His comic series is about a family who are extraordinary super humans and tells the story about them overcoming the dysfunctional childhood they had. They were born in order to save the world and conquer over the evil Black Orchestra. The main character is Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who is a famous scientist and inventor.

Gerard Way is the leading vocalist for the bad My Chemical Romance. His involvement and fascination with comic books isn’t new. He wrote his first comic when he was 16 years old. His comic book series, On Raven’s Wings, only produced two comics because he lost the art team shortly after. Luckily, The Umbrella Academy is doing well and has even won an Eisner Award. An Eisner Award is given out for great creative achievements.

It’s great to see famous punk rockers getting involved in the world of comics. Having high profiled figures will help expand the comic book market. Fans of the two bands could also become fans of comics. People’s perceptions about who reads and writes comics will also change. Anyone, even rock stars, can become involved with comics.

Spiderman Online Games For Free

Similar to the batman online games, Spiderman online games are a very distinct breed because they are basically developed for the comic book fan and they will probably contain other characters you might recognize from these mediums. Spiderman online games can also be free flash games that you and your child can play together in order to develop your little ones mind and ability to think logically, but more on this in a following article.

Spiderman online games come in many shapes and sizes and if you can't find one that you like, it means that you are not a true comic book fan. You have probably heard about the MMO RPGs that have superheroes and villain as main characters. Those are the game that you want to find when you are looking for Spiderman online games. You can team up with people in other parts of the world in the superhero team and fight the villain team. These games make for great battle sessions and I am sure that you will enjoy the fact that most of the abilities seen in the movies and comic books are to be found in the games as well. Make sure to try these games in the free trial mode first an that you like the game enough to pay a monthly fee of about 5 to 10 dollars. This is important, because if you start paying from the beginning you might end up paying for something that you don't like as much, and that is always an unwanted scenario.

Top 10 Best Personal Finance Books Of All Time

As I was arranging the numerous personal finance books I’ve accumulated over the years,  I couldn’t help but wonder how I can put everything together in such a tiny little space.  Then I asked myself, if I had a very small book shelf that can accommodate only 10 of these books, which books would I choose? I had to think really hard because I love reading books and I’ve learned a great deal about life and money through ALL of them.  These 10 books are special in that they have completely altered the way I view money and life!  They have inspired me to learn more about money and pursue financial freedom! May these same books help you achieve your financial dreams!

Here are Rich Money Habits’ top 10 best personal finance books of all time!

#10.  8 Secrets of the Truly Rich by Bo Sanchez

This one is special because it’s written by a preacher – and a famous Filipino preacher at that!  Bo Sanchez is a best-selling author of inspirational books in the Philippines.  This is his first book that openly talks about money, business and investing.

What I particularly like about this book, is that it tackles one of the most critical obstacles in making money – that is, how to reconcile money and religion.  Living in the only predominantly Catholic country in Asia,  it is very important for me to align what I believe in whether it be on religion or money.  Otherwise, I’ll just be confused and end up going nowhere.

The book is full of stories on how daily money habits make you rich or poor.  It describes the most common perceptions we have about money.  We were taught that money is the root of all evil.  When we watch our favorite TV shows, rich people are often portrayed as greedy.  They only got rich through “drug” dealing or some other “illegal” means. Due to this stereotyping, some us unconsciously don’t want to be rich! Who would want to be the “bad” guy in our own soap opera called life?! :)

As a result, there is conflict inside of us.  Some of our internal dialogs are

“I want to be rich…BUT not so rich that my friends would hate me and I would no longer have friends.” err…who wants to be loner?! :)

Or the most common,

“I want to be rich…and I’m so desperate the only way for me to get rich is by winning a million dollars through  lottery.”

The great tragedy is never realizing that you don’t have to be a crook, or be greedy, or become unfriendly, or win a lotto ticket to be rich - you only need to build rich money habits!

#9. Multiple Streams of Income by Robert G. Allen

This is one of the books I bought when I was in the US.  Since I love reading personal finance books, I ordered a bunch of them online.  I was able to get them cheaper because I looked under the "used” books section.  Surprisingly, most of them are in relatively good condition and look almost new!

The book was my first exposure to having multiple streams of income.  For someone who worked as an employee most of his life, I thought I could only earn from one stream of income – my job!  I realized having only one stream of income is not a very good idea because there’s also only one way money can come to me – through my paycheck!

Having multiple streams of income is NOT necessarily having a second job, or even a third!  Multiple streams of income building systems so that money can flow through your life.  It means, investing both your time and money to learn how to build those systems.

One way could be through real-estate investments where you get a “stream” of income from the monthly rental of your tenants.  Another “stream” could be getting portfolio income like “dividends” or “interests” from your stocks or bonds investments.  And yet another “stream” could be from royalties you receive from publishing a book or a music recording if you’re a singer.  Having a LOT of “streams” where money can come to you is certainly better than relying on just your “job” to make money.  The challenge is how to utilize what you have like time, skills, and money to setup these streams of income.

#8.  Secrets of the Millionaire Mind by T. Harv Eker

The great thing about the book is it makes you realize what money habits you have developed since the day you were born.  It brings out those subconscious thoughts that are hindering you from achieving financial success.  Some of the internal dialogs with yourself could be.

“I am not good enough.  I’ll never be amount to anything financially.”

Or you might say

“I’m poor because my parents are poor…and my grandfather is poor…and my great grandfather is poor…so I will always be poor…”

You might not be saying it out loud.  You might only be thinking about it.  Worse, you might not even be aware of it. And you wonder why you’ll not getting anywhere.  As T. Harv Eker aptly put it

“…if your subconscious ‘financial blueprint’ is not ‘set’ for success, nothing you learn, nothing you know and nothing you do will make much of a difference.”

#7.  The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss

The book speaks about the “New Rich”, a group of people who have the time, money and mobility to spend only 4 hours a week to generate money and live the life they want.  The rest of their time is spent on things they love to do like dancing in Buenos Aires, scuba diving in Panama or basking in the Hawaiian sun.

Who wouldn’t want to spend only 4 hours of his time working instead of the usual 40 hours a week?  Who wouldn’t want to have the luxury of time to do the things you really love?  Who wouldn’t want to take a very long vacation in the beaches of Hawaii while your business is taken care of and money is still coming in?

For employees, it offers practical tips on how to negotiate with your boss for a work-at-home arrangement. It also provides ideas on how to plan your own “mini” retirements so the money is still coming in, without you around.  It even discusses how you can “outsource” your life!

The 4-hour workweek is easy to read.  The ideas are presented in a simple and uncomplicated manner that you think you’re reading a comic book.  The book is conversational and funny.  Reading it is like speaking with the author face to face. You might even find yourself occasionally laughing at his jokes. (I know I have) :)

#6.  Rule #1 by Phil Town

I picked up this book out on a whim when I was at a bookstore in Malaysia.  The book explains investing in a very simple and understandable manner.  It is not intimidating in any way.  After reading this book, it made me realize that I did not need to be afraid of investing.  I just need to learn how to do it right.

Rule # 1 is “Don’t lose money.”

Whether the market is going up or going down, don’t lose money.  Whether it is a bear market or a recession, don’t lose money.  Whether you have billions or just a couple of hundred dollars in investment, don’t lose money.

The book discusses some of the basic myths about investing and provides simple strategies for successful investing while spending only 15 minutes a week.  It tells about the five key numbers that really count when determining the value of a stock or business.  It even mentions valuable internet tools and the advantages of managing your own investments to achieve your investment goals.

I know there may be other books on investing out there, but so far, this is the only one I’ve come across that made me understand the world of investing a little bit better.

#5.  The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason

I came across the Richest Man in Babylon from reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.  It tells about the ancient secrets of money.  The book coined the phrase “pay yourself first”.  In ordinary terms, it means – SAVING. But it is more than that.  The book tells that in any trade you’re in, you CAN still “pay yourself first”.  Once you have “money” in savings, you can then have that “money” work for you.

But how can you save when your little money is not even enough to survive on?  How can you set aside 10% of your income when you’re living on 110% of it?  How do you “pay yourself first” when the creditors are coming after you?

Paying yourself first is certainly not easy. It takes tremendous discipline. That’s one of the reasons why it is not popular.  But once you get the rich money habit of controlling your money instead of it controlling you, your confidence builds up, you’ll think that if you can do this then you can do anything.  And as with anything related to money, it touches everything.  Your health improves.  You become successful in what you do.  People will wonder why you’re always brimming with confidence. You become the richest man in every sense of the word.

Isn’t it better to walk into a store knowing you can buy anything you want because you have the money (saved)?  Doesn’t it give you peace of mind knowing that if some emergency occurs, you can readily rely on your saved “emergency fund”?  Would it be nice to be able to help your family or those closest to you “financially” for a change?  That’s the dream.  And it starts with paying yourself first.

#4.  The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas J. Stanley Ph.D. and William D. Danko Ph.D.

The book is based on a comprehensive research on the money habits of millionaires.  The results are surprising in the sense that majority of those millionaires are not what we commonly expect them to be. As aptly described in the book,

“These people cannot be millionaires! They don’t look like millionaires, they don’t dress like millionaires, they don’t eat like millionaires, they don’t act like millionaires – they don’t even have millionaire names.  Where are the millionaires who look like millionaires?”

Many of the “next door” millionaires  are first-generation. They did not inherit their riches, they built them.  Few of them do not spend more than $100 for a watch.  Others don’t even wear a suit to work!  They engage in types of businesses which could be classified as dull-normal.  Some are welding contractors.  Some are rice farmers. Some are pest controllers. Others are coin and stamp dealers.

What separates the “next door” millionaires from the rest is their money habits.  They are frugal in nature.  They value money.  They invest at least 20% of their income.  They even have a “go-to-hell fund” which can provide for their expenses for at least 10 years without working at all.

I think the most important lesson from the book is not that we know who the actual millionaires are, but the realization that it could be YOU!  If they can do it, so can you! It’s time to build your own rich money habit and be the “millionaire next door”!

#3.  Your Money or Your Life by Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez

I bought this book out on a whim.  I was actually looking for the book “Outliers” by Malcom Gladwell when  I saw this book at 20% off.

The book tells about managing not only your money but looking at it in totally different way.  Your money is only part and parcel of what your life is.  There is also time.  There is also your dream! What do you enjoy most?  How do you spend your money? What do you do with your time?  Would you still do what you do even if you have all the money in the world?

The book emphasizes managing the resources that you have like money and time.  It offers very specific tips like monitoring your spending and whether each of those is contributing to your goals or not.  It also has some ideas on how to identify exactly what you like to do and manage both your money and time so you can do more of what you love to do and less of what you don’t like to do.  It even has some charts to help you picture out and plot where you are and when your freedom day will be.

I think the main message of the book is not to choose money over your life or the other way around – it is to have BOTH.

#2.  Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki

As mentioned in my personal finance story, this is one of the books that made me realize I really need to develop rich money habits to achieve financial freedom.  The book is a story of growing up learning about money from two different dads: one is rich and the other one is poor.  The story unfolds to describe the different money habits of the rich dad and the poor dad, each one producing a different financial result.

The book makes the very complex world of money and business seemingly simple. It is so simple that the ideas can be explained to a child using only sketchy drawings.  The drawings illustrate how cash flows from your pocket to the bank when you pay your bills, and how it flows from your company to you when you get your paycheck.

What you do with the money after your receive it determines whether you become rich or poor.  Do you use the money to buy assets like real estate investments or setup businesses?  Or do you use it to buy liabilities like a brand new LCD TV in 12-easy-monthly-payments-with-zero-interest!

The reason I liked the book is because it inspired me to become better and to view business and money in a totally different way.  It expanded my understanding of how money really works!  Most of all, it gave me the confidence to dream again!

#1.  Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

Think and Grow Rich is one of the first books I’ve read about money.  The main message of the book is that you have to “think” about money first before it becomes real.  It is a direct translation to the phrase “what your mind can conceive, your body can achieve”.  When you really think about money and you have this “burning desire” to make it real, all the universe conspires to build the means to bring it to you.

Money is, first and foremost, only an idea.  It is not real.  The money you hold when you buy a bag of grocery is only as real as the “mutual” agreement you have with other people that the paper you’re holding is worth something of value equal to that you’re buying.

The book doesn’t say “Work Hard and Grow Rich”.  Working hard means different things to different people.  For an employee who doesn’t like what he’s doing and only get paid very little, everything is “hard work”.  For someone who love what he does, “working hard” is not in his vocabulary.

As Henry Ford said,

“Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it.”

There you have it! Rich Money Habits’ top 10 best personal finance books of all time!

P.S. How about you?  What are the best personal finance books you’ve read?

How To Squidoo Tips and Tricks On Giant Squid Open Mike Monday

Our guest on Giant Squid Open Mike was Alex Crabtree aka Drifter 0658, who recently created Factor Y on Squidoo, a new group of male lensmasters. Rocket Moms, a woman's Squidoo group, has been wildly successful for Squidoo and for all of us who participate there.

Factor Y is modeled after the Rocket Mom concept, but keeping in mind the difference between how men and woman utilize the Internet. Factor Y will support men using Squidoo for success or for freedom of expression, or as a creative outlet, whatever a person needs at the time of lens creation. Men are the gender minority on the Internet, Alex explained to us. Men are not multi-taskers, like women are, yet they spend much of their time surfing. And men buy more products on the Internet than women do.

Women often like to hangout and chat, thus the rise in Social Media use, whereas men are more and more turning to the Internet as a alternative to punching a timeclock in unsupportive environments. Women have had more of an opportunity to be "stay at home Moms."

Now men would like to have a similar experience, as the World economy is changing how people are doing business.

Alex said Factor Y officially opens 8/31/09. The focus will be--Focus! How to use the Internet, how to build quality lenses, and class work to help members achieve their objectives for Internet success, whatever that means to each individual.

The group will also use the "Ning" format to communicate class achievements and goals. Alex is in the process of formating the Ning now for easy navigation. of his lenses gets the best traffic at this time? He said the "Tail Of The Dragon" currently is ranking the highest. The lens is written about an eleven mile stretch of road with 318 curves in Tennessee, very popular amongst the biker community. Since this is the season for this activity, Alex attributes the recent rise in lens traffic to the parallel biker traffic on that famous stretch of road.

I was impressed by the great variety of graphic art which is represented on Alex's work. I asked him if he was a cartoonist, because of a series of cartoons I saw on his Lensography. He said he manipulated some of his pictures in his photo album to create a comic book effect.

He said that most recently, he is into sidebar graphic designs. The graphic runs the entire length of the text, he said, and I saw an example of this as I was looking over his lenses.

He said the biggest thing about HTML in your lens? is not to go over board with it. Content is the most important part of any lens.

A comment from the Blog Talk Radio chat room brought on a lively discussion, having to do with encouraging the men on Factor Y to speak from their heart. Every person has a male, female component to their psyche. Sometimes the way a person expresses herself is not balanced, as in the example of the recent outcry against healthcare reform at the August town hall meetings.

This is not a good example since these outcries are orchestrated by Health Insurance Companies, which in turn are churning hysteria at meetings across the country. But don't take my word for it. Ask Wendell Potter, Cigna Executive Whistle Blower, who recently told Bill Moyers this on PBS.

Carl Jung, American Psychologist, wrote extensively about the anima/animus or male/female component we all have within our deepest soul. The male/female exists within all of us, often in need of balance. The core issue is learning to appreciate each other's energy, instead of manipulating one another.

We discussed the Right and Left Brain in relationship to all of this. Alex said his next lens will be about the Whole Brain, and how to operate from a whole brain perspective. The right brain is more predominant in terms of creativity. He used the example of a "white paper" and how generally boring they are to read. However, if a person places a hint of humor or an editorial remark, this makes the piece so much more interesting, in contrast.

Story telling is a right brain addition to any lens or blog post.

At this point, we discussed Natalie Goldberg's book entitled "Writing Down The Bones," and the sequel, "Wild Mind."

Her advice is to write without censuring and write the truth. Do not edit out details that help to paint a picture of reality. Use powerful words.

Avoid "I think", or "I believe."

Be sure about what you write.

But don't beat people up with your words.

I think Alex will teach his fellow Factor Y men well--very well.

Internet Mlm Targeting Your Audience

On the internet, those who surf the internet have the ability to search specifically for what they want through various search engines, directories, and links from other sites. Location is not a factor because on the internet, just a click away is another website.

By creating a highly targeted site you can concentrate on drawing visitors who are already interested in the types of products you sell. It is much easier to sell specialty pet beds to a pet lover than to sell book-keeping software to a pet lover.

Internet mlm targeting is simply a specific group of people with the same interests or needs. For instance, you internet business could cater to:

- Tennis players

- Coin collectors

- Comic Book Collectors

- Fitness Enthusiasts

- Computer Games Players

Suggestions for Choosing A Target Market

What skills have you picked up through education or your current line of work? Can you market these skills online? For example,

- Programmers and Engineers may be able to write custom scripts and sell licenses for their use.

- Stay At Home Parents may be able to offer child-care tips, information on how to evaluate a daycare, or advice on finding the right school.

- Construction workers may be able to create a series of booklets on "inside information" prospective home owners should know before selecting a builder.

Start by selecting a market related to a passion or an interest.

Are you a hobby gardener? A fan of rhythm 'n blues music? A proponent of wiping out home business scams? One thing to be aware of is that turning a hobby into a business may "ruin" it for you. You may not like the feeling of being "forced" to come up with new content, new products, etc. You may simply prefer to keep your hobby exactly that: a hobby.

Then again, you may adore it. Imagine getting paid doing something that you love! I know several people who have turned their passions into a business, and not only do they make money, but they also have a good time while they are engaged in it.

Choose a market that fills an unanswered need.

Can you think of a product or service that you wished existed, but you have not been able to find it anywhere? If so, chances are that others have as well. The question is whether or not there is a market large enough for you to tap into and make a decent profit. For instance, doggy bakeries that offer gourmet doggy treats never existed until a few years ago. Now they are popping up all over the place to fill the demand.

Choose an existing market and improve what is being offered.

There thousands of website that claim to have the answer to finding a home-based-business. If you were to try and break into this market, you could "specialize" a bit more: do you want to cater to work at home moms? What about work at home dads? How about freelance writers? Technical jobs?

Take a look at what your competitors are doing. Can you offer something unique or improve upon what is already being offered? Can you offer better service, more personalized service, extras, that no one else has? The more saturated your market, the harder it will be to make money.

Regardless of what you choose, consider whether or not you can stick with it for a long time. Do you have the motivation, knowledge, and interest to offer up-to-date content to your audience? Do you have the skills and desire to create new products, or are there good affiliate programs available? Will you be able to sustain your interest and motivation in your business of choice?

Is the Internet An Ideal Vehicle For Marketing Your Business?

The internet offers an amazing opportunity for the "average" person to make money selling products and services (whether his own, or those of another company's). However, not all products sell equally well online. As yourself these questions:

- Is there a more convenient alternative? Products that aren't easily available at a local store have a better chance of selling online. Not only is it often more convenient to simply drop in and pick up whatever you need, the customer isn't going to be hit with additional shipping and handling charges (which can be quite expensive when shipping heavy products).

Here is a simple illustration. Suppose you have a household of pets. You are often running to the pet store to pick up more food. At one point, you had investigated ordering the products for your pets online. Imagine, door-to-door delivery! But, in the end, you decided against it. Not only would you have to wait for it to be delivered, but the shipping costs were nearly as much as the cost of the food! It was easier and cheaper for you to just pop into the store.

- Is the product something a customer needs to feel or see before making a purchase? An example would be a wedding dress. Most women want to try it on, walk around in it, and see how they look and feel in the dress before they make the purchase.

That is not to say that you cannot sell something that the customer may prefer to see/feel; if your marketing is good enough, you might actually make a great many sales. However, you run the risk of higher return rates from customers that discover that the product doesn't fit or didn't meet their expectations; which means less profit and more hassle for you.

- Are customers normally cautious about buying your type of product, even offline? Many people are still naturally hesitant to purchase anything online. So, if you are selling something that they normally hesitate to buy in the real world, then your challenges are compounded.

For example, some people don't think the services of a financial planner are necessary. They might only make one appointment with one due to persuasion on the part of family or friends. They discuss their situation with the financial planner and make a decision about whether or not they feel they can work together.

Now, if the financial planner sets up shop online, he claims that he is very successful and offers to help manage your money over the phone or by email. Most would probably hesitate to take him up on the offer without actually meeting him, viewing his office, etc. It is harder to gauge his honesty or credibility from a distance.

Some websites sell brand name items to try to establish a sense of credibility. These sites have the advantage of name recognition, which helps to inspire trust in the customer and sales.

- Is there a market for your product, at the price at which you intend to sell it? This is what it all boils down to. There has to be sufficient demand for your product at a price that allows you to earn a reasonable profit after all expenses are paid. For instance, if it costs $10.00 to manufacture a product and your optimum price ( the price that allows you to sell at maximum profit) is $10.50, is it really worth the effort?

- Is your target market likely to use the internet? Be aware that some audiences just don't intend to use the internet much or they use it sparingly. For instance, you are going to have a difficult time if your target market is retired folks who are terrified of technology, or low-income families who may not have access to a computer.

Researching for Your Target Market

Because of the changes that occur so often and so quickly, particularly online, businesses have to keep up-to-date with changing customer wants or trends. This is where researching your target market plays an important part in your business:

- Learn about your market: What do your customers want? Where do they congregate, and how do you contact them? Do you prefer contact by postal mail, email, flyers, or trade shows, etc...?

- Determine the demand for a product or service: Every business contains an element of risk, but with proper research, you will get a good feel for the type of product or service your market is looking for. Find out what your market wants, then create a product that satisfies that want. Don't create a product first and then try to find a market for it. That is a common mistake that can lead to wasted time, effort, and money.

- Adapt and thrive: New opportunities present themselves all the time! As long as you see changes happening, you can adjust your products, services, or business practices to work with them.

There are tools that can help assist your with determining who your target market should be and what exactly your market wants and needs. I shall talk a little more about this in subsequent trainings.

Your choice of a mlm targeting market will dictate everything you do online. It will dictate the topics you write about, which products you have to offer, your choices in advertising locations, and much more. Below are a few suggestions on generating ideas for your target market:
