About the Author

Can anyone recommend or give me a link for a free comic book creator software?

I need a software with comic strips that I can scan images into.

Inkscape...is simple and very effective though I suggest Gimp for the graphic artist type. i don't think there's exactly a free software for making comics but you should just use frames and lineart to create a page and color it, or screentone, or etc.

Marvel Posters

Posters have always been a favorite thing to put up in our rooms. We have always loved to stick either our favorite movie characters, musicians, the latest car or motorbike that is a big hit in our generation. Marvel comics have also created posters that kids can plaster all over their rooms or even frame up.

This characters include favorite characters like Wolverine, Magneto, Professor X, Jean Grey, Storm, Cyclops, and Saber tooth to name a few out of the X-men comic books. Other comic characters that have great wallpapers would also include characters like the Hulk, Daredevil, Electra, Spiderman, Doctor Octopus and the Fantastic Four to name a few. The poster age has even changed with the times nowadays posters are not only for the wall in your room but also for your computer. The Marvel posters have also changed to include not only the cartoon version of your favorite characters, but also the new motion picture version of the same characters so actors like Hugh Jackman can also grace your wall or computer as the Wolverine character that he played in the blockbuster movie, the X-Men.

You can buy these marvel posters on the internet or even at your favorite comic book store. Authenticity is important so make sure where it is you are buying your posters that are original. Look through all the websites and make sure you choose the right one because there are a lot of fake websites on the web. Choose your favorite character from your favorite Marvel comic books and you get to see them everyday either on your wall or on your computer.

What what was the 1 thing about a marvel movie that shocked/upset you?

I have a few but the most shocking was that Venom & Spider-Man did not fight long enough in spider-man3 like spider-man did with goblin and octopus in 1 and 2. Im not dissin Sm3 b/c its my 2nd Fav marvel/comic based movies of all time after Spider-man 2.

same here none of the fights are long enough

also along with that the endings always get worse and worse because they try to set it up for another movie...

Close Encounters Of The 'comic'al Kind !

It's a bird...It's a plane.... It's Pravin Nair !

I woke up from my dream.Damn, the shrill alarm clock. It always had to scream at the most inappropriate( or is it appropriate?) of times.. It was an amazing dream.

I had just saved the world from the vile plottings of Lex Luthor, my greatest villain.I was looking smashing in my red cape & was about to kiss the love of my life, Louis Lane, when damn, I got 'alarm'ed.

I was smiling to myself.A movie in technicolour detail, vivid & spectacular.I was the hero probably for the first & last time ever.

And I did all this real gracefully, wearing my inners over my bodysuit :)

I grew up on a diet of comics & storybooks.

Literally.Like all children of my age, I would be obsessed with comics. So, whether it was to be the 'Marvel'lous superheroes(Spiderman,Incredible Hulk,& gang), the 'Action' heroes(Superman),DC comics(Batman), comics was my lifeline..

Comics transported me to the world of fantasy. You must have heard the expression Boys with Toys?Well, comics were my only toys. With no other avenue for entertainment and with my hormones yet to kick in & the advent of Baywatch, Pamela Anderson & Playboy(in that order) yet to happen, comics was the favourite pastime.Every new comic issue of my favourite superhero would be a delight. With sweaty palms and an excited heart beating away so loud you would fear it would burst,  I recollect holding a new issue as if it were the love of my life.

I think one thing comics clearly taught me was 'hero worship'.

I remember aping, fantasising(yes my fantasies were so innocent then) rescuing trapped, scared civilians. My favourite fantasy was stopping a running train right in its tracks with sheer force of my arms. The train in this case would be my cousin who would try to push me(of course it was a mock push, he was elder to me).
I would push back and if he stopped in his tracks, it would give me that  false sense of strength.Yessir, the train comes to a screeching halt, no brakes.Look ma, no sweat, just hands! I also remember foolishly jumping off from verandahs, trying to imitate Superman, landing on my butt, and ensuring a real sore one for quite some days.A chipped tooth is what I still have as a memento.

I guess even now, I have not been entirely cured of these superhero fantasies.Like displaying foolish bravado in taking on a guy twice my size (Yes not exaggerating, it happened in the local trains, but that's another story).

So, why do comics & superheroes play such an important role in our lives?I believe it is because as humans, right from childhood, we believe in magic & miracles. Our minds are pre-disposed & very favourably so, towards the magical. We want to believe in mythic figures that fly, that can move mountains, kill the evil. We want to see good triumph over evil. And that is why we need a hero. This hero worshipping then takes different forms & structures, extending to other realms like sports, politics, films. Superheroes become very important markers of pop culture. They embody everything that is fantastic. All the qualities that we aspire or dream about.Strength, courage, brawn, victory. Sacrifice. They become the Icons.

All comics with superheroes borrow extensively from mythology(not possible to cover that in this blog, would be extensive). For example, Achilles the mythic Greek warrior was all powerful except for a weakness, his heel .Legend has it that as a baby he was dipped in the Styxian River to make him omnipotent but his heels were esposed and not submerged in the waters..Hence,Achilles became powerful all across except for his heel.So Achilles heel enters our collective phraseology, referring to any weak spot that could leave us vulnerable or well, make us...heel. :-)

Also, in Hindu Mythology, Duryodhana's Achilles Heel is actually his thigh! He loses the battle with Bhima when a blow is strategically placed to his thigh..My point is, they were the first superheroes.Characters such as Rama or Krishna.Yes, they didn't wear capes, or spin webs. But they took on monsters, took on an army of people, were loved by all, and they respected humanity.

The Scribble Board

Hi there! Welcome to my blog. Writing for me is like life, sometimes volatile, sometimes staid but always engrossing! Remember as children when we all wrote something for the first time? Yessiree,it all began with a SCRIBBLE! And that, my friend, explains the name of this blog. This blog here would be a bouncing board of sorts.I would want to know your thoughts, ideas & views on what I write..

So, what are you waiting for? Scribble all over,I say!

Marvel and DC comics?

If there are so many universes and time-lines, why don't Marvel and DC end all of their series and start new comics with new characters? Why do they feel the need to rehash old material and retcon one universe to point where back-stories are too convoluted?

well my impression is that all of these comics are sooo similar that it would be hard to think of something new original and incising.

okay: let's say they just stopped all of their series. A few things would happen:

1) they lose all of the "old" batman, x-men, superman etc. fan, which is the companies' dependable source of $$$ (mind you that these fans aren't just $ they're $$$$$$$$$ for these comic industries.)

2) the companies have to hire new committees of bigwigs (who haven't read a comic boo in their lives) to think up of new characters and adventures and super power. possibly new artists too. So not only do they stop their net flow of cash, but they have to spend much of it on restarting.

3) after the first two steps Marvel & DC would have to actually SELL their new products. their former fans are too pissed at the companies now. and people who aren't interested in comics just aren't interested: the companies would never be able to get the non-readers to read their comics.

So overall i guess what im trying to say is that DC & Marvel are doing well as is. the current fans inspire the next generation of fans. also with all of these movies of comics coming out these companies are actually getting more "fans" that will most likely buy movie-based merchandise or even read the comic. for example, Watchmen has been always one of my favorite comics and i could always find them in book stores if i came across the comic section. now that the movie is coming out, every bookstore ive walked into has been sold out of it or i find one or many people sitting around reading it.

In short, the companies are doin fine and need nothing more to change.

I really hope this helped... i hope it wasnt too much info to read.

Funny Jokes - A Way Of Sharing Joy

There is no denying the fact that wit and humor are as essential in our daily lives as a fresh breath of air. We all crave for moments of joy and laughter and their presence indeed makes life a beautiful experience worth living. From the trivial activities marked and characterized by good humor to the extravagantly funny remarks that we so often encounter in our day to day life, laughter is indeed a much craved from of joyful expression and there is no better or faster way to provoke and produce laughter among individuals than by listening to or reading funny jokes. If you are one those individuals who look for your daily comic strip in the newspaper first thing in the morning then you'll be delighted to find out that the world wide web is one platform that is full of free funny jokes and liners to put the joy back into your busy and hectic schedules. Technology has enabled the expression of ideas and possibilities to an extent that we never imagined before. We now have dedicated websites on the World Wide Web which provide individuals with a huge collection of free jokes. Jokes may be of many types and may belong to numerous categories. They may be related to professions such as medicine or engineering or they might as well be a simple humorous anecdote that you or someone else encountered in their day to day life. The basic idea behind all the kinds is simple and one- i.e. to provoke laughter. However, as the internet boasts a humongous database that is accessible by all and varied age groups and thought pools; it is quite possible that you may come across some crude jokes or disturbingly explicit humor not suitable for young adults. Furthermore, there might be jokes targeting certain ethnic groups or beliefs and sharing these jokes in public might provoke feelings of resentments and discord or even worse, might even hurt the feelings or a friend or a colleague. For this reason it is highly recommended that you opt for clean funny jokes instead of crude or dirty jokes. Websites dedicated to providing good funny jokes to their users and visitors focus not only on casual funny events and pictures but also on children jokes and clean jokes that can be equally shared with family and friends without any hesitation. You will find funny jokes related to parenting, college jokes, school jokes, marriage jokes, bar jokes, home jokes, miscellaneous jokes, one-liners etc. Jokes not only help people smile while relieving them of their numerous stresses and strains but they actually help individuals recover their health by improving their moods and general outlook towards life. Funny jokes are an excellent way of sharing joy and laughter with your loved ones, be it parties or get-togethers or whether you are enjoying a tranquil moment alone in your favorite spot at home.

Date Night: The bout of out-of-towners

Let this modest charmer stand alone. If you must follow it up, think spinoffs. There’s probably a film’s worth of comic gold ...

Anyone know any dark/gothic themed graphic novels?

Hi there, I'm looking for some graphic novels or even comics with a sort of 'gothic' theme to them, now, by this I mean more of the artwork and stuff, but the storyline can be dark too, as long as the artwork is also gothic.

I want to know because I am interested in the art and storyline's of these books, and want to build up a collection.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, Tom

PS - anything with a truly genius plot/storyline will also be good.

Hellsing, crescent moon, cirque du freak, bloody kiss, D.N.Angel. thats all i can remember, hope i helped!

Custom Tattoo Artists, What Is All The Hype About?

Located a authentic custom tattoo artist may be more difficult than you think especially now that the market is flooded with so many tattooists. How do you know that your are dealing with the real deal and what should you be looking for when picking your custom tattoo artist?

It seems like everywhere you go now a days you will find a tattoo shop. Of course this is not surprising, tattooing had finally left the shadows of the underbelly of society and is now firmly apart of mainstream culture. Whether you like them or not tattooing is here to stay. Knowing that the once taboo craft has become acceptable many are considering getting inked. But where do you start?

Sure, it's easy to visit the local tattoo parlor, pick some design off the wall and have it tacked into your flesh, but this would be akin to walking into a used car dealership finding the coolest looking car in the lot and paying whatever the dealer asked, then drive out of the lot and have the wheels fall off and the engine blow up, not smart. So why risk your body to the same kind of foolishness? What should you do?

First if you want and nice tattoo don't let the price be your main concern. With the advent of the Q-Switched laser tattoos may not as permanent as they once were, but bad decisions and a lack of good research can be very costly. A little footwork can save you from enormous regret and an empty wallet. Good tattoos are expensive. Just know that! Picking up the yellow pages and calling every tattoo shop listed to find the cheapest price is frankly stupid.

On average tattooists in the U.S. Charge between $100 and $200 per hour. Often times the better artists are in the bigger cities where their rent is higher so their rates will be at the high end of that scale. Even if you are quoted a flat rate the tattooist is figuring that rate on how long he thinks it will take him to do the work. That being said, it's always best to work by the hour not a flat rate. Why? A tattooist may quote you $500 dollars for piece that he thinks it will take him about 5 hours to do. Understand that if there are other customers waiting to get work done by him or if he can rush your job so that it only takes 3 hours instead, then he will. Instead of making $100 an hour he just made $166 an hour! That's great for him but your tattoo will not look as good as it could have. Almost all custom tattoo artist work by the hour. It's fair for the artist and the customer. Don't rush them! Let them work their magic, when it's finished you glad you did.

Custom tattoo artists are generally speaking the elite among tattooists. If you are considering getting a new tattoo. I strongly recommend that you only deal with custom tattoo artists. The difference between a custom tattoo artist and the typical parlor tattooist is that primarily the custom tattoo artist tattoos designs that they themselves drew up specifically for you. They are indeed artists and many of them hold art degrees. They almost never work from flash designs. Flash are the designs that commonly line the walls of the majority of tattoo shops. If you get one of these design you can be guaranteed that it has be tattooed on hundreds if not thousands of other people. Although the flash may be very nice looking and designed by professional artists many tattooists working in flash tattoo parlors are basically tradesmen who have limited artistic capabilities and trace these designs onto your skin to the best of their ability. It's a real gamble when dealing with these flash parlor tattooists. You never know if your tattoo will end up looking good in the end or not.

Do your homework and find a custom tattoo artist that you feel comfortable with. Here are some of the United States' more famous custom tattoo artists. Check out their website and you will see for yourself way they are considered the Nation's best. Arron Cain of Cedar Ridge, CA. and you can find him at http://www.aaroncain.com. Cain specializes in science fiction, bio-mechanical art and is an incredible tattoo machine builder. His tattoo machines are works of art in their own right.  Jeremy Garrett of New York City and his site is http://www.nyartman.com. Garrett doesn't specialize in any particular style but his work has a comic book edge to it. He is one of the country's most respected cover-up tattoo artists. Last but not least you have the very strange but awesome work of Chris Dingwell up in Portland, ME. Check out his wonderful weirdness at http://www.chrisdingwell.com.

I had included more in this article but articlesbase only allowed three links.  Do a google search for Nick Baxter who does amazing soft airbrush looking tattoos, Paul Booth the king of all that's evil and Guy Aitchison another master tattoo artists.

No matter which tattooist you chose make sure they are licensed tattooists. They will be regulated and trained in infectious disease control. Ask to see their license, make sure it has their name on it and that it is current. Good luck and happy inking.

Entertainment News! 1/21/10

Entertainment News! 1/21/10

Brooke Mueller

Yesterday the only news out there about Brook was that she was in intensive care for oral surgery. Most of us would assume that was a crock to delay a court hearing or due to some type of injury. More details were released today. Apparently, Brook had emergency surgery to remove her wisdom tooth and her mouth became infected. The infection spread and she now has pneumonia in both lungs. This poor woman- will it ever end? The hearing that was scheduled to take place tomorrow may be postponed until February 8th due to her illness. Brooke's attorney Yale Galanter filed an emergency motion allowing Sheen to visit her in the hospital.

Conan O'Brien

Conan's last show will be Friday. Many of us are sad about this but I think Conan will be just fine. Not only is he going to receive a severance pay of 32.5 million dollars, he is now for sale to any other network that wants to scoop him up and will get paid regardless of whether or not he finds a new gig. The Tonight Show staff will receive a severance of $7.5 million and the executive producer will get $4.5 million. I haven't seen Conan's show in so long because I've been too busy to stay up that late but I'll have to check out the last one on Friday. I'm sure it will be great but a little sad for his fans.

Two and a Half Men in Danger of Turning into 1 ½?

Actor John Cryer alerted authorities that he thought his ex-wife hired a hit man and was planning to have him murdered. The FBI has been on the case and John is starting to feel more comfortable that this was merely a threat. Wow. Charlie Sheen beats his wife and Cryer's ex-wife wants him taken out. Cryer has been involved in a custody battle with his ex for some time. If the threat is valid, perhaps he and Brooke Mueller should run away together and hire a boatload of bodyguards to stand outside their house until these people are out of their lives for good… just a thought.

Celebrity Child Beater

Markice "Kesan" Moore previously on the MTV reality show From G's to Gents is out on bail after being accused of beating his one year old daughter and breaking her bones. This guy is out on $20,000 cash bail and living it up after hurting a helpless child. Come on people. Put this scumbag in prison and feed him to the wolves. Let him get a little taste of his own medicine. How do abusers like this get to walk out of jail? Moore was taken in because he was accused of breaking both of his daughter's arms, three ribs and her collarbone but claims he is only accountable for her wrist breaking because she "fell out of her bed".

Pants on the Ground

Larry Platt who auditioned on American Idol and sang his original song Pants on the Ground is getting a lawyer. He is happy that his song became popular and that people everywhere are singing his catchy tune but now that it's popular, he wants to make some cash out of the deal. Platt never copyrighted his hit so he is attempting to do so now. Platt likes Brett Favre's rendition of his song and is interested in getting together with him to record a duet of the song.

Twilight

The Twilight craze doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon. Stephanie Meyer, the author of the novels is joining forces with a group of graphic artists to create a series of comic books with the first of the series being released on March 16, 2010.

Lindsay Lohan

It seems Lindsay's hot date for the Vienna Opera Ball coming up next month will be no other than 77-year-old Richard Lugner. Huh? Lugner is notorious for dating younger women and in the past has been seen with stars like Paris Hilton and Nicolette Sheridan. I don't know how this guy does it. It must be that he is a huge society figure and these women just want to maintain their spot in the limelight because if you've seen this guy, you'd have to agree that it probably has very little to do with attraction.

Simon Cowell Charity for Haiti

Simon will be producing an album that will be on sale and the proceeds will be donated to the earthquake victims in Haiti. He was asked to do this project by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. We don't have the entire lineup of singers for the album but so far Susan Boyle and Leona Lewis are involved.

Lady Gaga Rocks New York

Gaga has hit the road after recuperating from her spell of exhaustion and impressed her fans with her Monster Ball Tour concert Wednesday night at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Madonna was seen at the concert accompanied by her daughter Lourdes as well as Donald Trump, Sting and more celebrity fans. It looks like Gaga is the new Madonna sporting unique and risqué outfits of her own and pumping out hit after hit, not to mention putting on affordable concerts that are sure to entertain! The proceeds from the concert will be donated to earthquake victims in Haiti.

Celebrity Quotes:

The following celebrities are included in the long list of those who have donated money to Haiti.

"I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse. We must act now."- Wyclef Jean

"It is incredibly horrible to see a catastrophe of this size hit a people who have been suffering from extreme poverty, violence and unrest for so many decades. We understand the first response is critical to serve the immediate needs of countless people who are now displaced from their homes, are suffering trauma, and most require urgent care."- Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

"I am heartbroken by the catastrophic events of the past six days in Haiti.  It is important in times like these that we come together and find ways to help in any way we can."- Gisele Bundchen

"Small loans make an enormous impact on the lives of Haitian women currently living on less than $3 a day," the actress said. "And now, more than ever, Haitian women need these capital inputs to help themselves recover from this tragedy in a sustainable way."- Natalie Portman

"Haiti's still suffering... I was in New York during 9/11 and the level of disaster isn't in the neighborhood of what is happening in Haiti, but I just remember feeling nobody really understood. And I worry that young people don't know enough about what's going on there."- Lady Gaga

Smallville: Chloe Sullivan Comes to Comic Books

The CW's Smallville may be called an adaptation of the Superman comics, but this time, it's the long-running comic that's going to look back at Smallville for some bits of inspiration. March 12's Superman issue 674 will be featuring Smallville's very own aspiring writer, Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack) as she enters the comic book realm. This would be the first time an original character from the CW show has made its way into the pages of the Superman comic book.

Comic book writer Kurt Busiek revealed to Newsarama that the inspiration for this transition came from the fact that another famous character, Jimmy Olsen, was also adapted from another form of media, The Adventures of Superman radio show in 1940. He said that there was an initial question on how to bring Chloe into the picture, but he everything eventually fell into place, thus creating a brilliant idea, which he says "would give us several elements to the cast structure that have been missing for years, but in a new and different way."

However, fans should not expect a complete Allison Mack replica, as the character has to be drawn to look like Chloe, but not too much like Mack due to issues with likeness rights. In fact, the Smallville Chloe and the Superman comic book Chloe do have a lot of differences.

For one, Chloe won't be all grown up on the comic books like Clark and Lois. In fact, she will be retaining her age and status as an aspiring journalist.

"The problem we'd have faced if we brought her in with the same background as the TV show is that she'd fill two basic roles -- the Girl from Back Home and the Reporter -- and those roles are both pretty solidly filled in the adult Superman cast, by Lana and Lois," Busiek explained. "So she's got to have a different spin, one that lets her occupy a different role from either of them. She's the younger sister of someone Clark went to school with, not a classmate of Clark 's herself. As a result, she's the new intern at the Daily Planet, fresh out of journalism school and itching to make a name for herself. That'll make her clearly different from Lois and Lana, and at the same time more familiar to watchers of the show."

Moreover, the Superman comic book version of Chloe won't have any powers and will know about Clark 's secret. Chloe will be introduced in issue 674, but will figure prominently in the next issue, as Busiek promises for another exciting saga in the life of Superman.

The Why of SEO - a Thermal Lifejacket for the Economic Ice Age!

Despite the many and varied articles written on how SEO is done, most people have only a vague appreciation of WHY it is absolutely essential. As the economic downturn bites into revenue streams, can you afford to ignore a key website business strategy?

That includes a depressing number of website designers, some of whom actually tell their clients that SEO is a waste of time and money, and that it’s quite unnecessary these days because Google is smarter than ever before... Au contraire - it becomes more and more critical every day, as website numbers expand exponentially! Lack of knowledge is not confined to website designers, it also includes a number of wanna-be SEO firms who make outrageous claims about their special relationship and affinity with Google etc, but have little idea of what it takes to consistently succeed in attaining Top 30 rankings.

There are many articles written on the HOW of SEO, covering the many and varied aspects of the art of improving your site’s position in search engine ranking pages (SERPs). Whilst most people have heard the term "search engine optimization" and have a vague appreciation (or apprehension) of the hoped-for outcome, surprisingly few people seem to really understand WHY it is absolutely essential.

Be very aware that in most cases website design is taught as an Art, not as a Business discipline. Website designers are rarely taught anything about search engine optimization, and few are interested in mastering the skills required to produce optimal results. That’s all very fine and dandy – but it leaves a lot of website owners desperately disappointed in mediocre results! You’ve probably heard the analogy about building a shop in the middle of a forest too, I bet? Seriously, it really does not matter how beautiful the site is – if no one finds it, then it’s just a gorgeous waste of virtual space.

Content is Still King

Regardless of the various conflicting opinions, Google conspiracy theories and misinformation, it comes down to a very simple concept - content quality, and accurate content classification. Content is where many sites fail dismally! The sites that thrive are those with well written, well organised original, interesting and useful content. Don’t copy other peoples stuff. Aside from being illegal, at best it immediately downgrades you to second best… As a general rule, from an SEO perspective, bear in mind the most fundamental issue - Google loathes duplicate content!

Classification

There are literally millions of websites, each competing for viewers in a particular niche. Reasons for their existence vary across the A to Z spectrum - advertising, entertainment, comedy, educational, humour, informational, music, news, promotional, sports, wine, video, zoos... you get the picture, right?

In the world of books we have the Dewey decimal classification system. Every published work is assigned an ISBN number, and libraries classify all books under a rigid hierarchical subject classification system. It’s not perfect, but it works pretty well because every one uses and understands it! Erudite people write insightful book reviews, which are sometimes included in advertising and promotions. Hold this thought, its relevant to a following section. You want to find a book on a particular topic, or by a specific author, you do a search and Eureka! You’ve found it, there's a list, even! The best books are reviewed multiple times, and take pride of place in the “best sellers” rack.

Relevancy Ranking

Using different terminology, search engines are trying hard to do the same thing – to give their searchers the most accurate list possible, containing exactly what they want, so they can pick and choose from it! Unfortunately, there is no Dewey classification system on the web. The closest thing to a hierarchical subject listing is the Open Directory, Yahoo, or one of the thousands of other web directories - all of which are inconsistently organised into completely different illogical structures!

So, here we have Google and other search engines trying valiantly to index and categorize the billions of pages on millions of websites, in hundreds of countries in a multiplicity of languages. Then, they have to calculate each page's relevance to specific search queries…

Are You Helping or Hindering?

That’s where YOU come into the picture… It’s a big, big task – have you made any effort at all to help Google to help you? Or is your website fuzzy and unfocused, with no clear statement of content or purpose? In most cases, sites are constructed with vague intentions to do SEO as an optional extra sometime in the future… What, you want Google to do everything for you?

Done Any Homework?

Do you have any idea how your primary audience searches for the information, products or services you offer? Do the pages on your site describe your content using terms your clients use? Because that’s the only way Google can match searchers with relevant content! What? You actually forgot to do any market research before launching the site? You have no accurate, researched, hard data on the keywords your potential clients would use? You asked your friends at work for ideas? Absolutely incredible!

Let us pretend you’re looking for clients for your small bed & breakfast business in Christchurch, New Zealand. You are optimistic that potential customers in New Zealand, Australia and the UK will be able to find your website amongst the millions of competing B&B pages on the web, be convinced by your persuasive advertising copy and elegant pictures… you’d also like them to come and book directly with you, to avoid hefty commission payments on the dozens of B&B Advertising Directory sites who also want you to pay to advertise! Dream on!

So You Want Google To Work For You?

You’d really like Google et al to help connect your potential clients to your business via Search Engine Results Pages by making your site No.1… And you certainly want “qualified” traffic from Google, visitors who are specifically looking for exactly what you offer!

Anyone who thinks they can survive online without Google, Yahoo and MSN is either a thoroughly well-rounded idiot, or is a household name who does not need to advertise to generate qualified traffic. There is no middle ground.

But here’s where it gets hard! How will Google do that? What solid information have you provided Google in your on-site content, and in the off-site links to your site? Have you got a Domain Name which encapsulates your business type and location; Bed-Breakfast-Christchurch.co.nz? Or a cryptic name, like; BnBChChNZ.com? Of the two, which is most likely to give the SE its first clue as to what your site is about?

What is On-Site SEO

Think about it this way… Does your home page have an explicit and accurate Title that provides a direct and unequivocal statement of the site’s business purpose in 70 characters? Does the Title say “Bed & Breakfast Accommodation, Christchurch New Zealand” or does it say “Welcome to Dusty Lodge” or something equally asinine?

Does your home page have an explicit and accurate Description that provides a brief outline of your business purpose, unique selling proposition, and call to action, encapsulated in 150 – 200 characters? Or does it contain some vague warm and fuzzy drivel about beaches and sunsets?

Keep the book analogy in your mind, and take a look at your Home page, particularly the first heading and first paragraph… “Welcome to my website” is not a productive approach! What does it tell your visitors about you? It tells me that you are at best naïve and both you and your website designer need SEO counselling! And think about that first paragraph… is it an accurate summary of the site’s reason for existence? Eliminate that fruity, cheesy, fluffy verbiage immediately!

If your website is required to deliver a return on investment, particularly by selling products or services, or delivering customer service, informing or entertaining, your really need to accurately describe your website’s content, and allow it to become visible online. What’s that I hear? Oh, you want it to make you rich as well? But you don’t really want to make a serious commitment or effort to do the job properly? Right… good luck with that! And remember that old GIGO acronym – “Garbage In, Garbage Out!”

What is Off-Site SEO?

This may surprise you, but some people are dishonest about their site content. Frankly, some people handle the truth in a very awkward fashion indeed… Telling Google that your site is about Pamela Anderson, when its actually selling Bart Simpson comics, is deuced annoying to the people who visit it! Therefore, Google and other SE’s decided long ago that some external verification of every website’s content would assist their efforts to deliver the most relevant SERPs to their clients. Makes perfect sense to me…

How is this achieved, I hear you ask. Well, you’ve heard of links, right? Back to the book analogy – think of good links as being like a series of book reviews! What if lots of people are writing positive things about your site? What if multiple, external, widely distributed sites are all saying that your site is about “Bed & Breakfast Accommodation Christchurch NZ” huh? The balance of probability that your site is relevant to such a search is positively impacted by this external confirmation! A coincidence of keywords in on-site content and off-site links reassures Google immensely! Those keywords in the off-site links are referred to as anchor text, and should form the link title.

No, Its Not Rocket Science

Frankly, search engine optimisation, in the pure sense of the term, is not particularly difficult to understand, or to do. The aim of the search engines is to provide their customers with the content most relevant to the search they are making. Therefore, your salvation lies in making your content relevant to the known searches! Do some thorough keyword research, learn and understand your target audience’s searching behaviour. Plan pages that target specific, high-volume, low competition search phrases.

Don’t be vague, don’t waffle, and help Google to help you!

When the economic gravy pot is bubbling merrily, and there’s ample business gravy slopping over, even the mediocre get a share. But when the economic ice age casts midnight shadows at noon, and credit wolf packs softly pad the empty streets, howling balefully at the waning moon… then, when you’re sucking the last congealed streaks of business gravy off your tarnished website spoon, ask yourself... Can you afford your website to be second rate, disorganised and drifting ever further into the icy wastes of mediocrity?

With a better understanding why SEO is so important to your website's success, will you continue to ignore it?

Do I need to copyright a comic book that I am working on?

I'm working on the scripting of my own comic book that I would also be drawing as well.

Do I need to copyright it before submitting in during the convention? I already wrote the pitch which is only a page. The proposal which I need to revise is 2 pages. It may be slightly longer. I also wrote a paragraph summary of the main characters that's about a page and a half. I broke down the stories just have to do the actual scripting.

Do I need to copyright this? Because I know it's common for screenplays or spec scripts. In novels I've been told that copyrighting is not done because it shows you do not trust the person.

But in terms of comic books, should i have this registered or copyrighted?

The book is all my own characters. I was hoping to write the whole series and draw the first issue.

Everything else in my port are various pinups of various characters from various publishers and a 2 sequential i'm working on.

Putting a copyright notice on your created work is optional as once you've created something it's already copyrighted, the trouble comes with proving you created it first. Sending yourself your own work in the post via recorded delivery (UK service, bound to have similar in usa), in a secure envelope/package, should suffice in proving that you created said work as the date will be stamped on the sealed envelope. Obviously you should never open the envelope unless you need it in court, also write a note of the contents and keep it safe.

I think you can even send yourself created work in file format (on cd/dvd/etc) to keep the size down so considering how easy it is to do then I don't see any reason why you shouldn't protect your work, especially if it only takes just one muppet to claim your work as their own. Make sure you read up on it first as this is from memory (poor memory) from over five years ago and uk law at that, I think the basics are the same for america though.
