Make The Decision To Collect Antiques

People often find the idea of starting an antique collection daunting. Since there are literally thousands of things to collect, many find it hard to choose what collection to start. Moreover, people are afraid to delve into collecting antiques because they think that it is expensive and a time consuming hobby. Since there are a lot of unscrupulous individuals, there is also a chance that a budding hobbyist might get discouraged after having bought a fake antique or a reproduction for a steep price.

Here are some things to consider when deciding what antique objects to collect:

Determine the reason for starting the collection

The first consideration you need to think about is your reason for collecting. If you just want to start your own collection for your personal satisfaction then you really don't have to worry too much about the market value of the objects you will be collecting.

However, if you think of your collection as an investment, you may want to surf the Net or shop around for things that many people consider valuable. If you eventually want to earn money from you collection, you must study and research about antiques on the market.

Consider collecting something you like

Even if you are planning to sell your collection afterwards, you still have to choose something that you are interested in. If you don't know anything about baseball and you're not interested in the game, then it won't be fun collecting baseball memorabilia even if they are hot items on the market. However, if you follow what you like, you won't regret investing time and money in building up your collection.

If you are still confused or clueless as to what objects to collect, you can probably look back to your childhood. Think about what items you desired or wanted badly when you were a kid. Did you like fancy dolls? Were you an avid airplane fanatic? Did you admire the China and other porcelain items in your grandmother's cupboard? Did you like to read and love books, newspapers, or comic books? Do you love music and records?

After asking yourself these questions, there is a big chance that you will have an epiphany of what you would like to collect. Antique collecting should be enjoyable as much as it is profitable.

Do your research

Collecting antiques is a very demanding hobby. You need to allocate a significant portion of your time every week or month in studying and collecting data about the objects you want to collect. At first, you can surf the Internet for articles and websites on antique collections. This will give you a rough idea of what you are getting yourself into. Moreover, you may even encounter blogs about other people's experiences when they were starting out. Such information is very important for novice collectors.

Aside from the Internet, books are good sources of information about this type of hobby. You really don't have to spend a penny in the beginning. Just visit your local library for materials about the things you're interested in collecting. You can also look at your local bookshop for possible resource materials.

Another way to do your research is by visiting antique shops, galleries and even flea markets. This will help open your mind to what other things can be collected. Toys, books, jewelry and furniture aren't the only things that can be collected. Bottles, boxes, posters, photographs, and even cameras and other gadgets are also good antique collectibles.

Aside from researching about what to collect, you should also start studying the world of antiques. You have to know how to detect fakes or reproductions before you start your collection because there are many people who are out there just to defraud others. Moreover, you should also know something about pricing, appraising, and the value of antiques. In the antique world, even identical items may have different prices because there are many factors to consider - cracks, chips, condition, marks or signatures.

Find other collectors

Once you have decided what object to collect, it is advisable to find other people who share the same interest. If you are lucky, you might even find organizations or web-based groups that promote your object of interest. You won't know about the antique world and market alone. You need the help of other collectors, appraisers and aficionados.

Follow the tips above and you will discover what object to collect and how to start your collection.

Enjoying the Adventure That is Revealed by the Marvel Comic Books

Comic books are a firm staple of many people. With these comics people can follow the exploits of their favorite series without having to worry about missing any action. There are many different comic book types that are well known but many of us like getting comic book action from comics like Marvel comic books.

The various charters that are depicted in these comics are ones that many of us have grown up with. Just as we are familiar with Superman we know the adventures of Spiderman, the Hulk, and the Scarlet Witch. We also recognize their many villains like the Green Goblin, Magneto, Mr. Sinister and many other villains and superheroes.

Marvel comics are very well known and today some of these action comics have been transformed into full length movies like that of the X-Men Movies, Spiderman and even the DareDevil. These movies and the crowds of people who come to see them just reaffirm that Marvel comic books have a way of reaching into various aspects of our lives.

Since many people both young and old love reading the various adventures of their favorite action characters sometimes these Marvel comic books take their cartoon characters and change them slightly to reflect the various moods and feelings that are currently around.

The next time that you decide to buy some of your comic book choices and you see some Marvel comic books you may want to see if you can find ones from a few years ago as well as the more current ones.

You will probably be surprised to see that not only does the artwork of the comic books look different but the action series itself may have some interesting storylines and other new characters making their appearance. These changes are mainly due to the fact that even Marvel comic books need to keep up with the times.

For this reason you will see that these different comic books are constantly looking different but they generally try to follow the original story lines. Without seeing the various exploits of Marvel super heroes and heroines like the Scarlet Witch, Jean Grey from the X-Men and Spider Man you will probably feel let down.

As a result all of the Marvel Comic books feature their well known characters in the original storyline and sometimes they are in adventures in different series. This way you get double the pleasure. The next time that you are looking to buy some Marvel comic books you may want to choose the various old and new versions of these comic books. You will enjoy all of the action that is revealed before your eyes.

What do you think would make a great Internet store?

I'm looking at starting an online store. There are many possibilities; here are a few:

Magic Tricks
Comic Books
Gags & Practical Joke Items
Tropical Decor (ex. figurines)
Christian Items (crafts, Bibles, etc.)
Crafts (ex. friendship bracelets)

I was thinking about having 1 site with different links; each link would take the buyer to another section of the store. What are your thoughts on this? What would be great selling items (either from above, or your own thoughts on what would sell good)? What do you look for in an Internet based store?

Any ideas, suggestions, tips would be welcomed. Please be as detailed and descriptive as possibe.

Also, realizing that there are many comic book stores on the Internet, I need some ideas and suggestions on how to create my own store, so that it is unique in such a way that it will draw potential customers to it; something big that sets it apart from other online comic book stores.

Thank you.

best thing to do is research those very same keyword on search engines. reason is you want to learn how many monthly search for each of those search terms.

Too many ssearches means a TON of others sell the same items you are and a ton of competition, to little and might not be enough to make a profit.

Also consider sub-niches to those terms. example in stead of comic books, maybe specialize fantastic four or some sub-niche.

Below I have given a link to overture one of the largest pay per click search engines on the net, they feed most of the largest search engines on the net.

good luck keep going, and don't forget. Set up a blog along with the e-commerce site. you need to add content so that the engines will come to your site.

Best regards Auggie

The Foundling Hospital was established at a time when there was scant provision for society's vulnerable. The Museum traces the history of London's first children's charity and features many poignant objects of social history including personal mementoes left by mothers with their infants as means of their identification. The Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising - The Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising is the result of consumer historian, Robert Opie, who saw the need to record the history of the products around us. Starting at the age of sixteen with a packet of Munchies, the Collection now extends to all aspects of daily life – toys, comics, magazines, newspapers, technology, travel, royal souvenirs, fashion and design. Robert says, ‘Whilst families tend to save mementoes from special occasions, it struck me that little was being done to keep the everyday material. When the thousands of pieces of this social history are assembled into some giant jigsaw, the picture becomes clearer as to the remarkable journey we have all come through'.

Finding Both Crude and Tasteless Humor

There's a wide range of humor out there, and regardless of who you are, there is a lot to appreciate. That being said, one of the most universally appealing forms of humor has to be rude and crude humor.

While rude jokes may not be appropriate for everyone, pretty much everyone finds them funny, and how could you not? There are a lot of comedians that do some pretty fun rude jokes. The great thing about rude humor in stand up is that most comedians aren't afraid to say anything. This means you can get some crazy stuff showing up in a stand up routine.

One important addition to any comedian who practices rude humor's repertoire is how he or she tells the famous "Aristocrats" joke. This joke is so storied and popular that a documentary was actually filmed around it. In the film, a variety of huge stars in comedy told their interpretation of this joke.

The common thread in the joke is that there is a family of performers, and they are pitching their show to a promoter. The show is full of horrible acts, so naturally, madness ensues! What makes this joke so great is that every comedian has their own way of telling the joke, so each time you hear it's like hearing it for the first time.

Another important avenue for those seeking humor of the crude or inappropriate kind is the internet. Surfing the web can uncover some hilarious stuff, even if it's not all intentional. Sometimes the best humor comes from web forum discussions which, to the participants, are completely serious.

The problem for these forum goers is that when an outsider views an argument about whatever the forum's topic is, it can be downright comical. If you aren't a science-fiction geek, and you stumble across a serious dispute about the validity of warp drives, it can be side splitting!

Humor isn't just something to be read or heard. Humorous pictures can be found all over the web. Sometimes the funniest stuff is visual, and that's especially true in the case of crude humor.

Usually these pictures will have some form of nudity or obscenity attached to them. What's even better than the crafted stuff is when you can find a picture of something that actually happened. Reality is often funny.

Combining visual and audio is the comedy. Comedy films and television shows can be very hit or miss, and usually what one person finds funny, another may find inane and dumb. Typically, if you want the big laughs, you'll have to turn to comedic films, as television has to be sanitized to an extent.

On the other hand, you may find more off the wall and unique humor on TV because TV studios aren't quite as afraid to take a gamble on a product like the film industry. This is because the budget for a TV show is quite a lot lower. So as you can see, there's a lot of avenues to pursue if you're looking for laughs.

A quick Google search could have you laughing for hours!

I need ideas for a comic strip...?

I have to make 2 comic strips for school, both have to be 4 slides long on PowerPoint. I don't have any ideas...You know you read editorial cartoons and such and like I can't think of any good ideas...text-wise.

An example, theres a comic that goes like this:

Lady 1: "I have three maids cleaning my house."
Lady 2: "I have one..."
Lady 1: "That's too bad..."
Lady 2: "...My house isn't dirty enough for three."

^ ^ something kind of humourous like that.

Any ideas would be appreciated ! It is due tomorrow !

Try centering your comic around the idea of procrastination and the danger that comes from putting off a project until the last minute and then scrambling to get it done so you don't flunk your class...

That ought to be pretty funny!

Frame 1:
Jack: "Dammit, Jon, you'd think after I got a 50 on my last project, I'd learn not to wait until the last minute on stuff!"
Jon: "Uh-huh... I hear ya, Jack."

Frame 2:
Jack: "Hey, Jon... how 'bout this? Since I'm stumped, I'll finish your project and you can do mine!"
Jon: "Sorry... I just finished. You're on your own! Why don't you see if you can con someone else into doing your homework for you, though? I think you've got real shot there!"

Frame 3: "...please bail me out...God, if you help me this time, I promise I'll never make this mistake again!"
(Great voice from above): "Uh-huh...that's what you said last time. You're on your own...I finished my projects a week ago, and now I'm on vacation!"

Frame 4:
"...Please bail me out here, Yahoo!...I've got a project due tomorrow, and I'm stumped...maybe I shouldn't wait until the last minute next time..."

Globalisation and hit men push finance aristocracy trans-Atlantic

Globalisation and hit men

push finance aristocracy trans-Atlantic

By Wendell W Solomons

Summary: Anglo-American finance institutions find themselves forced to cough up larger and still larger pay rewards for their hit men. Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer explains tactfully, “Our aim should not be to prevent rewards where they are deserved, for long-term success or hard work.”

Today’s rules of unregulated markets allow executives to go out and become financial raiders in their own right — in competition with their previous financial home. This headache shakes the firms at a time when France and Germany at EU summits ask for a ceiling on the incomes of executives of financial institutions.

Yet, there's more. Besides the EU, globalisation now causes the G-20 to take up the risk to world trade posed by financial freebooting. China, India, Russia and Japan (which states that it can no longer play the role of "Yes-man") belong in the G-20 which represents two-thirds of humanity.

A diplomat who served Australia for more than a quarter century brings up the year-2005 published work, “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man” by John Perkins.

This stimulates thought.

(a) Have the hit men been part of the plan to make us walk the economic gangplank today? (b) In the alternative, do events in the market suggest that the world’s traditional finance aristocracy walk the razor’s edge to avoid losing control of its financial raiders whose ranks have expanded into thousands? These thousands have been saturated too by the media catch-phrase of the last three decades — “Free to Choose.”

The US Federal Reserve has been placed on the horns of a dilemma because financial institutions like J P Morgan pay increasingly large salaries and bonuses to keep their financial raiders at home instead of their zipping out to carve for themselves a part of the cake like the infamous Bernard Madoff who took a $ 60 billon wedge of savings, including those of his friends. In this next quote, we see a careful US Federal Reserve chief trying to keep financial firms from being restrained in their endeavours:

“Forcing large, troubled financial firms to shrink is not a useful solution to the dangers created by ‘too big to fail’ institutions, Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Gary Stern said in an essay released on Tuesday.’

“If we exclusively embrace a reform that misleadingly promises victory over TBTF by constraining the size of large financial firms, we may squander the time and resources needed to address the problem at its roots,” Stern said. (Reuters, Apr. 21, 2009)

Australian diplomat Reg Little recollects how John Perkins had described life as part of an elite group trained to “utilise international financial organisations to foment conditions that make other nations subservient to the corporatocracy running our biggest corporations, our government, and our banks.”

The Australian diplomat adds —

“Perkins’ second book on financial strategies, ‘The Secret History of the American Empire,’ invites readers to revisit and reconsider events like the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and ponder on it as the product of a team of economic hit men. It also raises daunting questions about the longer-term viability of major global institutions like the World Bank and IMF.”

Those then are the dimensions of the hit men’s world and scope of their know-how. We have a salient example next of the men who want to have their cake and eat it.

Zombie Hit Men

Lawrence Summers, a nephew of economics text-book writer Paul Samuelson, was placed on a team to conduct economic reforms in the Baltic republic of Lithuania. Within a year of his team’s effort, the economy of the republic turned pale. Suicide rates rose to the highest in Europe. Lawrence Summers played out more than the familiar role of loan salesman for Wall Street banks. He ambled on as a master zombie, groomed by what US journalists in 1976 had called "Voodoo Economics".This behavioural nudging was a legacy from Great Communicator President Ronald Reagan who promoted Milton Friedman to Presidential Economics Adviser, the position he had hankered for after the slaying in 1962 of President John F Kennedy. Friedman had been translating for two decades for the psyche of hit men such as Lawrence Summers, the social philosophy of Ayn Rand.

Rand, Ayn (1905-1982) was named Alice Rosenbaum in St. Petersburg by her non-observant Jewish family. A fan of early movies, she had chosen to study social pedagogy in Bolshevik Petrograd. From there she carried her stock-in-trade across oceans to the USA. Her movie scripts to adjust behaviour flopped and she took to typing stories instead. A wealthy sponsor was found through the grapevine to finance the printing of her work and force-feed its promotion on university campus.

In the USA of the 1950s and 1960s Rand received promotion as a cult figure for college students. By 1965, courses on her books were offered in as many as eighty American cities. Wearing a $ sign as a brooch in her dress, the chain-smoker taught that selfishness is a virtue, that altruism is a vice, that the unfettered capitalist, Mr. Top Hat of her writings that began in the 1930’s, was the best possible persona for the world.

Lest we miss her purpose, Martin Seymour-Smith, a critic, explains:

“Unfortunately her crypto-totalitarian and ultra-simplistic ideas have had some influence on the conservatively bred young, since they allow people to be ruthless without a bad conscience. Her ‘philosophy’ is capitalistic-Superman (as in the figure in the comics).’

He continues,

“The ‘great’ men are those who use others, in the name of ‘reason,’ with an enlightened ruthlessness.” As icing on the cake, he adds, “The Fountainhead” — like her other books — is offensively ill written (‘pedestrian, pockmarked with short, clipped staccato sentences’).”

Many defined her social philosophy as one proposing a dog-eat-dog outlook. Gore Vidal described her outlook as “nearly perfect in its immorality.”

Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman brought forth men like Lawrence Summers as zombie functionaries. Pushed out of Harvard by teachers but himself ‘Too Big to Let Loose,’ the same Summers has been promoted by the financial aristocracy to the position of head of the National Economic Council at the White House of President Barrack Obama. Hopefully, Summers will now face the music and dance — promoting discipline on the turf as Godfather of financial raiders.

Alerts

Financial icon George Soros with an intellectual coterie of his own, anticipated that the hit men would shift the anchor of the aristocracy. He moved in with an article called “The Capitalist Threat” a decade ago —

“Unsure of what they stand for, people increasingly rely on money as the criterion of value. What is more expensive is considered better... People deserve respect and admiration because they are rich. What used to be a medium of exchange has usurped the place of fundamental values, reversing the relationship postulated by economic theory. What used to be professions have turned into businesses. The cult of success has replaced a belief in principles. Society has lost its anchor.” (‘Atlantic Monthly’, Volume 279, No. 2, February 1997.)

Two centuries ago a forecast on lost moorings had been penned: “This is the abolition of the capitalist mode of production within the capitalist mode of production itself... It establishes a monopoly in certain spheres and thereby requires state interference. It reproduces a new financial aristocracy, a new variety of parasites in the shape of promoters, speculators and simply nominal directors; a whole system of swindling and cheating by means of corporation promotion, stock issuance, and stock speculation.”(Marx’s manuscript edited and published by F. Engels in ‘Capital’, Volume III, Chapter 27.)

Contemporary US commentator Laura Knight Jadczyk follows on —

“And so it is: such a state of affairs cannot last long... and, as Lobaczewski says, the outcome is inevitable. Sooner or later, the reality this psychopathic elite think they create is going to turn around and bite them. In fact, it is already beginning to. And that is due to another psychopathic trait: the inability to remember the past or conceive of the future and the consequences of their actions.’

“Goaded by their character, psychopaths thirst for global power even though it ultimately condemns them to death along with millions — or billions — of others. Psychopaths do not have the capacity to understand the catastrophes that they repeatedly bring on themselves and the world. Just as germs are not aware that they will be burned alive or buried deep in the ground along with the human body whose death they are causing, so the psychopath does not understand that the only reality he is creating is the reality of his own ultimate destruction. (http://laura-knight-jadczyk.blogspot.com).

Old Clan versus New Legions

How did the number of financial raiders reach cataclysmic size? In part, Rand and Friedman had chanced to imperil the financial aristocracy by promoting the conversion of an old system. Here is a case study to reflect what the old system was.

A man named Jacob Schiff emigrated from Germany and settled in the US in 1865. After ten years in the market, he was settled for marriage with the daughter of Solomon Loeb, the head of Kuhn, Loeb & Co. Thus was Jacob Schiff incarnated in the firm’s destiny in 1875.

Jacob Schiff had bonded with a social clan in the USA. Yet, Schiff’s family had other resources too. The Schiff patriarch, a Rabbi, shared a mansion in Frankfurt with the Warburgs (of the old Venetian Abraham Del Banco family) and with the Rothschilds (newer to the money trade but future king-pins in financial London.) Thanks to these ties and underwriting with money, by 1900 Jacob Schiff came to be advertised as the prime mover for a $200 million war mobilisation loan for then distant Japan.

Awarded (a) state honours by the emperor and (b) loan interest on the public finance by the Japanese people — Schiff reached global landfall. His financial fraternity was also (c) playing Japan against Russia for the Russo-Japanese war of 1905. The fraternity’s business background to the blood and gore event was that Russia was the last major European power that remained to be taken into bondage by loan salesmen.

As decades proceeded, the number of hit men increased by leaps and bounds. During that process Jacob Schiff’s international cruise ship, Kuhn, Loeb & Co, hit reefs. According to a standard reference:

“The firm’s fortunes began to fade following World War II, when it failed to keep pace with a rapidly changing investment banking industry, where Kuhn, Loeb’s old-world, genteel ways, did not seem to fit... The firm lost its independence in 1977 when it merged with Lehman Brothers, to create Lehman Brothers, Kuhn, Loeb Inc.”

That was not the end of the so-called genteel affair. On September 15, 2008, take-over giant Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy protection following the massive exodus of most of its clients, drastic losses in its stock, and devaluation of its assets by credit rating agencies. The Lehman filing marked the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history.

When National Idea Meets International Idea

Seeing more doings of zombies in the market, financier George Soros also stated that Milton Friedman’s neo-liberalism (with Ayn Rand hidden at the spinning wheel,) “is a false and dangerous ideology” (‘The New Republic,’ September 2002).

The head of the Catholic Church, Pope John Paul II, dealt with the dangers of neo-liberalism too. He chose to visit Cuba and make his pronouncement at an open-air mass  on January 25, 1998. By then he had witnessed neo-liberal experts conjure up despair in his native Poland.on their advertisement of prosperity.

Russian Patriarch Cyril II visited miners in the coal-producing region of Donbas in summer 2009 and said,

“[This city] Gorlovka, like the whole of the Donbas region — where people earn their daily bread by the sweat of their brow and risking their lives — is a locality of miners, metallurgy workers, land workers and chemists” he declared, “And your labour produces real value. If the whole word laboured like this ... there would be no crisis…”

“Honest workmen pay for those who create money out of thin air.” (APN, July 31, 2009.)

The Patriarch’s discussion of fair-play emerged in another form at the EU Brussels summit in mid-September. French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who led the charge against exorbitant levels of banking executives’ booty, threatened to walk out of the conference if no stringent compensation rules were passed.

“The bonus bubble burst tonight,” added Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, whose country holds the EU presidency.

“We have agreed to say that enough is enough and we need to move away from the current culture of compensation based on short-term performance.” (BBC, 17 Sept. 17, 2009)

Yet, Democrat President Obama is forced to respond that he is against being ‘over-prescriptive’ on pay.

* * *

In the 1950’s America emerged as the world’s richest nation and continued receiving the attention of the financial city of London for the geopolitics of the 1-sq-mile financial city had bankrupted their British host in both World Wars. Today an interlinked London-New York financial clan dreams up taxpayer bailouts (1) to accommodate its prosperity and (2) to keep its financial hit men from straying.

Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer in a September 2009 speech to the Scottish CBI, said that bank bonuses and pay needed solutions which were “global in scope and practical in action,” and international co-operation was needed to prevent banks playing one country off against another.

“Our aim should not be to prevent rewards where they are deserved, for long-term success or hard work,” he said. (BBC Sept.3, 2009)

Unlike in Jacob Schiff’s day, marrying the financial house’s daughter won’t accommodate legions of hit men. Simple arithmetic of the day has demanded instead that raiders’ booty should keep building up. So if the financial aristocracy can’t pirate enough booty, its hit men will abandon ship and freeboot in competition…

The financial aristocracy will continue its fall between the devil and the deep blue sea at the September 2009 G-20 meeting in Pittsburg and successive ones. It is a difficult geography to play —

1. A trans-Atlantic game against the EU;

2. One against India, China, Russia and Japan who are among the two-thirds of the world’s population that globalisation sees represented in the G-20;

3. A cat-and-mouse game of the financial aristocracy with its own in-house raiders.

Further daydreaming by the financial aristocracy about further taxpayer bailouts may bring to the fore a central issue: that its centrepiece is not the Bank of England that was nationalised at the end of World War II. The aristocracy’s vessel is the privately owned US Federal Reserve for whom steaming presses churn out paper dollars to ‘buy’ goods from the world. Democratic President John F Kennedy was slain after his edict issuing a competing government dollar, and that leaves to the world community the task of dislodging the abusers of the US Federal Reserve.

Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1821, “The flames kindled on the Fourth of July 1776 have spread over too much of the globe to be extinguished by the feeble engines of despotism; on the contrary they will consume these engines and all who work for them.”

Reel Deal: Who wants to be a superhero?

A movie based on a comic book, “Kick-Ass” ponders what it would be like if people tried to be superheroes in the real world. The flaw, of course, is that the “Kick-Ass” world isn’t the real world at all. It’s not even in the same zip code.

Celebrate Record Store Day- April 19th, 2008

When Neilsen Soundscan releases their sales data regarding vinyl records, did you know that they do not count hundreds of ‘indie’ vinyl record shops in their totals? So when you read ‘vinyl sales have risen….such and such a percentage,’ that these numbers woefully underestimate the true sales of vinyl.

But local independent and national record stores want to be counted and included in the vinyl sales figures because it is at these smaller record stores where vinyl records are selling the best.

So to help bring attention to this dilemma and to help celebrate the record store culture, hundreds of independently owned music stores across the country will celebrate the first annual “Record Store Day” on April 19th.

I spoke with Eric Levin, who owns Criminal Records (www.criminal.com) a independent record store in Atlanta about the concept and celebratory plans of Record Store Day (www.recordstoreday.com).

“We came up with the concept at the annual Noise in the Basement convention in Baltimore, a gathering of independent record stores hosted by the Music Monitor Network (www.monitorthis.com). It is similar to “Free Comic Book Day (www.freecomicbookday.com), in that we decided to help bring attention to our stores by saying- we are out here, enjoy what we have to offer,” said Eric. “So on this day, all of the stores that choose to participate will simultaneously link together and act as one with the purpose of celebrating the culture and unique place that they occupy both in their local communities and nationally.”

“We have over 200 independent record stores that have signed up for the event, with more signing on each day. Each store will be doing something different to celebrate Record Store Day. Some stores may opt to have an ‘in store’ performance, special sale events, demonstrations, dances, swap meets or ‘an afternoon at a record store’ promotion as well as provide a ‘goodie bag’ that promotes new formats, new releases and exciting information about music, theatrical and gaming releases. Everything that makes an indie store unique should be on display,” related Eric.

Music stores have been part of our culture for decades and it is important to note that, while there may not be as many of them as there used to be, there are still those unique music shops that continue to thrive and are still part of our local and national music culture.

In fact, many music related entities have signed on to be part of Record Store Day as Eric explains:

“We have many groups involved including the Coalition of Independent Music Stores (www.cimsmusic.com), the Alliance of Independent Media Stores (www.thealliancerocks.com), Newbury Comics (www.newburycomics.com) & The Music Monitor Network (www.monitorthis.com), where one can find links to some of the best indie record shops around the country; with many more organizations signing up each day.”

“In fact, all indie record stores are invited to participate by making April 19th, 2008 a day of celebration at their place of business. Some music labels are getting involved as well by releasing special editions marking the day and the celebration of the music and the record store,” said Eric.

Moreover, many famous musicians are chiming in and doing their best to, not only promote Record Store Day, but the culture that encompasses it. Here are a few quotes:

Paul McCartney - “There’s nothing as glamorous to me as a record store. When I recently played Amoeba in LA, I realised what fantastic memories such a collection of music brings back when you see it all in one place. This is why I’m more than happy to support Record Store Day and I hope that these kinds of stores will be there for us all for many years to come. Cheers!"

Norah Jones - “It’s important to keep indie record stores alive because their unique environments introduce music lovers to things in a very personal way.”

John Doe - “The physical act of picking up a recording (CD, vinyl, cassette), checking it out, finding something unavailable, etc.; is an experience you will NEVER get online. And now it's becoming common knowledge that CDs have more digital information than most files, so they sound better. A great or even good record store is like no other."

Chuck Berry - "Music is an important part of our culture and record stores play a vital part in keeping the power of music alive."

Joan Jett - “The indie record stores are the backbone of the recorded music culture. It's where we go to network, browse around, and find new songs to love. The stores whose owners and staff live for music have spread the word about exciting new things faster and with more essence than either radio or the press. Any artist that doesn't support the wonderful ma and pa record stores across America is contributing to our own extinction.”

Ziggy Marley - "Record stores keep the human social contact alive it brings people together. Without the independent record stores the community breaks down with everyone sitting in front of their computers"

Ben Watt (Everything But The Girl) - "It is hard to underestimate the role of independent retail in the music industry. As the world continues to try and cram every purchase they make onto their computer, turning music into binary digits and artwork into pixelated packshots, we can only sit and wait for them to wake up from their dream and realize that ultimately human interaction in shops, with informed good people, handling cherishable artefacts is good for the soul. In the meantime we need to support the people who keep this world alive for the moment we all realize we need it again."

Sam Phillips (A&R/producer for Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and many others) - “There would be no Elvis. There would be no Johnny Cash. There’d be no B.B King. There’d be no Roscoe Gordon. There’d be no Carl Perkins. There would be no Jerry Lee Lewis. There would be no Roy Orbison. I can just tell you. We owe all of that to the independents and the independent people that work so hard for us to have something that could be accepted through their efforts, hard work, and desire to keep a personal feeling in every record..”

Dean Wareham (Luna) - “We are drowning in a sea of Myspace, blather, and too much information. Music is everywhere and nowhere. The independent record store is the solution, a place staffed by friendly (or not) people who are actually paid to weed through this crap and help you find the good stuff.”

G. Love- “Independent record stores are where kids like me learned about the music that made them the musicians they are today. Independent record stores are about the love of records not the love of money!”

So as you have just read, the passion that these musicians have for the independent record shops is immeasurable. These are the professionals who know a little something about the music industry and embrace the concepts, culture and meaning of Record Store Day. Let’s make Record Store Day a national celebration of the independent record store, the musicians who love them and the historical culture that each individual store brings to each and every one of us.
