Milan - 20 Fantastic Things To Do

Milan Malpensa Airport Car Rental

1. Feast your eyes on the Last Supper

The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci in the church of Santa Maria della Grazie is arguably the greatest painting of the Renaissance, capturing the dramatic moment at which Jesus reveals one of his disciples will betray him. It's so realistic that you can imagine the shock, amazement and hostility of the religious followers. The work is testament to a troubled history. Paint started peeling away in Renaissance times, when the wall was used for target practice. In the 19th century it was a backdrop to the French invasion and nearly got destroyed in the Second World War. It's a miracle that it has survived. But thanks to a restoration the fresco can now be seen in full colour. Make sure that you reserve a timed, 15-minute slot in which to visit the masterpiece.

2. Scale the Duomo

The Duomo of Milan is an amazing sight. Stretching up high above the piazza del Duomo, it's the third largest church in Christendom. A staggering 3,500 statues and 135 spires adorn the marble structure, which has a Baroque and neo-Gothic façade, as well as five bronze doors carved by different artists. It's no wonder that it took 500 years to complete and building work continues today. To appreciate this beautiful cathedral in all its glory, take the lift to the roof, from where you to get a breathtaking view of the Alps on a clear day.

3. Bag the latest styles at the Rectangle of Gold

Milan is a haute couture powerhouse, where fashions jump from catwalk to clothes rail in weeks. But unlike the sprawling district in Paris, Milan's boutiques fit into one square, bordered by via della Spiga, via Manzoni, via Sant'Andrea and via Montenapoleone: the Quadrilatero d'Oro (Rectangle of Gold). Designer named stores include Armani, Chanel, Missoni, Prada and Versace. Even if the price tags are out of your budget, you can spend many a happy hour admiring the window displays. And if you can only just afford €500 on a pair of Miu Miu boots, rest assured: the shopkeepers will gladly accept plastic.

4. Explore the labyrinthine Castello Sforzesco

With 12 mini-museums and vast archives running all the way from Palaeolithic history through to 1950s furniture, Castello Sforzesco really needs an entire day. During the 15th century, it was home to the aristocratic court of Ludovico 'il Moro' Sforza, patron of Leonardo da Vinci, but fell into decline under French rule until it was restored with the help of architect Luca Beltrami. You can see the results in the 20th century recreation of the Renaissance tower above the façade. Museum highlights include the Museo d'Arte e Scienza, with displays on Da Vinci's life; the Palazzo d'Arte, a fantastic showcase for design that was once home to the Triennale; the Pinacoteca di Castello, a gallery of luminous early Renaissance works by Bellini and Mantegna; and Civiche Raccolte d'Arte Antica, a sculpture gallery.

5. Have a Venice experience in Milan

It may not be Venice, but Milan is still a city of canals and a quiet cruise on its still waters throws light on historic gems. Navigli Lombardi (www.naviglilombardi.it) organises a tour that takes in the ancient washhouses of vicolo dei Lavandai and San Cristoforo, the Scodellino bridge and the old Darsena port. Built in 1603, this port sits at the confluence of two canals linking Milan with the Ticino and Po rivers, and now hosts a sedate trade of riverside shopping, dining and drinking. As the canal stretches across the city, you'll find boutiques, antiques restorers, bookstores and nightspots lining the banks and side streets. Navigli Lombardi runs full days out in June and July, with return transport to Gaggiano, lunch and afternoon bike hire (€45). Tickets can be bought at Studio Mitti, an artist's shop opposite the boat's dock, by telephone or on board.

6. Savour the flavours of Milanese cuisine

Milanese restaurants serve the most varied of all Italy's regional cuisines. Here you'll find creamy pasta, dairy and meat products, alongside international foods such as maki and curry. Our top pick for sampling Milanese food is Antica Trattoria della Pesa. Located in a 19th-century weigh station, it has a cosy ambience and some of the finest funghi porcini pasta in the city; the generous Costoletta alla Milanese (breaded veal) barely fits onto its serving plate. Any deviations from tradition will be strongly discouraged, including the sacrilegious squeezing of lemon juice on to your cutlet.

7. Relax to the max at Milan's spas

Pulled a muscle in your shopping marathon? No sweat: one of Milan's spas will have a special treatment for you. Fashionistas should head for the Aveda-based Lepri, a salon and spa owned by the gregarious Fabrizio Lepri, a sought-after hairstylist. Another option is the Bulgari Hotel, which offers a serene sanctuary with a stone and gold-mosaic swimming pool and ESPA at Gianfranco Ferré, a small but perfectly formed spa inside a designer boutique. For something hot and steamy, try Hammam della Rosa, where you can follow a circuit of varying temperatures, rooms and plunge pools. And if you fancy going back in time, visit the Terme Milano, situated in a restored art deco palazzo. A day pass gives you access to steambaths, saunas and open-air pools. Slip on a swimsuit and dive in.

8. Sample a sandwich of distinction

Business-centric Milan has almost forgotten the good old three-hour pranzo (lunch). Today's workers grab a lite bite in an hour, so businesses can stay open. But that hasn't meant that food-loving Italians have had to suffer. At Bar della Crocetta the humble sandwich has become an art form, with over 100 panini oozing wonderful ingredients, from wild venison to prosciutto. De Santis doubles that number of sarnies, enticing you with elaborate concoctions, including basil-flavoured goat's cheese and marinated artichokes, squeezed between thin pieces of their own secret-recipe grilled bread. If you fancy an alternative to panini, nip behind the Rinascente department store by the Duomo to Panzerotti Luini, famed for its panzerotti - rounds of dough stuffed with tomato and mozzarella, then folded and fried. Be prepared to wait at lunchtimes.

9. View the best art collection in the city

The modest but exquisite collection at the Pinacoteca di Brera art museum covers works by major Italian artists from the 13th to the 20th centuries. Highlights include Mantegna's Dead Christ, a moving Pietà by Giovanni Bellini, Piero della Francesca's Virgin and Child with Saints and Caravaggio's Supper at Emmaus. Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese are all here. There's also a studio of plaster casts and drawings, and contemporary works, thanks to its wonderful study collection. Behind the museum, the Orto Botanico di Brera is a lovely spot to relax, and there are plenty of exhibition spaces, boutiques and cool bars to visit in the area.

10. Grab a really great coffee

Milan is the city in which Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz first formulated the concept of launching US espresso bars, where the public can work, meet and relax. Italy's cafés already fulfil this role with zeal: local baristas remember your name and usually start preparing your usual beverage the moment you walk in. But forget the tall frappuccino; you can expect your caffè lungo macchiato or cappuccino scuro to be served fast and short. Around the Duomo, there's a clutch of elegant cafes at which to relax. Fashion-conscious shoppers should try the bustling Trussardi Café and Caffè Miani (aka Zucca), whereas opera fans should stop by the quietly dignified Caffè Verdi. Around the Castello Sforzesco complex, the Bar Bianco is a popular place to drink a caffè macchiato while planning your itinerary on a sunny weekend.

11. Be both cheap and chearful at happy hour

With cocktail prices fixed between €6 and €8 thrown into the aperitivo mix, the city's hippest bars all attempt to out-chic the others at the daily happy hour: DJs are hired for the early evening slot, seasonal concoctions are chalked up on the wall, and mountainous buffets pull in the punters. Bhangrabar serves Indian specialities, and Radetzky ups the stakes with marinated artichokes and oysters on ice. Fresco Art has a selection that includes frittata, smoked salmon pasta, celery and walnut salads. Many bars include garden areas, so you can drink a Campari in the fresh air. Volo has a traditional English-style walled garden, with wrought iron furniture shaded by trees, whereas the garden at HClub is re-landscaped seasonally. It's a great place in which to lap up free salvers of Russian salad and queen olives. In the cocktail stakes, Nottingham Forest and Cuore are in the premier league.

12. Sing Oh Bej! Oh Bej! at the top of your voice

The Sant-Ambrogio church, named after the city's patron saint may not be as beautiful to look at as the Duomo, but it's more important to the locals and has shaped its history. Between the ninth and 15th centuries, it hosted the coronations of nine Italian kings (four of them are buried here too). Once a year the streets surrounding the church sing with the Oh Bej! Oh Bej! Festival. Bustling crowds sample traditional food such as pancakes, roast meat, chestnuts and mulled wine, and stalls sell crafts and antiques. The exhibition of a silver statue of Ambrogio and a special morning mass brings the church to life.

13. Shop in one of the oldest malls in the world

For a spot of luxury shopping, look out for the glass-roofed arcade near the Duomo: the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (NB this is spelt in the guidebook as Emanuelle II). Opened in 1867, its designer Giuseppe Mengoni pioneered its complex marriage of iron and glass 20 years before the Eiffel Tower was built. The ceiling vaults are decorated with mosaics representing Asia, Africa, Europe and America and at ground level there are mosaics of more local concerns. It has a grand style that's given it the name of il salotto di Milano (Milan's living room). Prada's flagship store has been in business here since 1913, and it's recently been joined by Louis Vuitton and Gucci. The upper echelons of Milan society all pass through at some point. Suited businessmen will happily pay €10 for a coffee on the terrace at Zucca, and elegant grandmothers carry chihuahuas in Fendi bags. It's the perfect place to people watch while enjoying a coffee and a slice of cake.

14. Support AC Milan (or maybe FC Internazionale!)

The San Siro Stadium is an essential place of pilgrimage for any football fanatic. This 85,000-seater is home to two rival clubs, AC Milan and FC Internazionale, which are among the most powerful in the world. Even on non-match days, a tour and a visit to the museum gives an insight into the powerhouse of football. Highlights include 1928 Inter cufflinks, documentation of Berlusconi's purchase of the football club in 1986, and white ceramic busts of AC Milan stars Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard. There are plenty of items of historical interest, such as old table football sets, photographs from the stadium's first Milan-Inter match and a display of football boots showing how they've developed over the past century.

15. Hunt down cut price catwalk goodies

Locals prefer the city's many outlet stores to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and are prepared to elbow their way through cut-price catwalk fashions to find the best bargains. Such treasure troves are packed full of returns and factory seconds. The only drawback is that even at discounts of 50-70 per cent, price tags can provoke the occasional 'Ouch!' and refunds are unusual, so try before you buy. Outlets cluster around the corso Vittorio Emanuele II. For general needs, try the established outlet of Il Salvagente ('the lifesaver'), with three floors of top stuff for men and women and a kids' section called Salvagente Bimbi. Ladies' fashion bargains can be found at Dmagazine Outlet on the city's main shopping street. Shopaholics should invest in a copy of Scoprioccasioni (www.scoprioccasioni.it).

16. Become a drama queen at Opera at La Scala

If you can get hold of, or afford, a ticket to La Scala, opera-lovers worldwide will hold you in higher esteem. La Scala has a massive stage, 2,015 seats and some of the best acoustics in the world, and it draws in the finest performers. Named after the Santa Maria della Scala, the 1381 church that once stood on the same site, the opera has a dramatic past. It was inaugurated in 1778 with an opera by Salieri, and many great works by Puccini, Verdi and Bellini have premièred here, so it has become a symbol of national pride. Thanks to a vital restoration and change of direction, it now stages cutting-edge opera with fluid scene changes and seat-back screens, which offer an instant translation of lyrics. With Stéphane Lissner at the helm, the programme is innovative and varied: an operatic version of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth will debut at La Scala in 2011.

17. Rummage around the flea markets

Shopping heaven though it is, there are days when trawling through centro Milano in search of the latest Prada pantsuit can lose its appeal. So pick a sunny day, leave the heels at home and hit the city's best markets. The Fiera di Senigallia has long been the city's top flea market. Its specialities include'70s vintage disco gear, compilation CDs, Peruvian baby clothes and old comic books. Over a canal or two, the popular Papiniano stocks a mix of goods, including plants, shoes, homewares and linens, with the odd food stall thrown in. Expect to use your elbows if you want to get near the cut-price clothes. Head up north to check out underrated Isola, a bargain hunter's delight that has ceramics, end-of-season clothes by Miss Sixty and offcuts of coloured Como silk. It's also good for fresh fruits and veg, and ultra-cheap, à la mode fashions. Fauché is the fashionistas' favourite for cut-price designer shoes. On the last Sunday of each month, around 400 antiques dealers display their wares at the Antiquariato sul Naviglio Grande. Running for two kilometres alongside the city's oldest canal, the market pulls in close to 150,000 people, and is a good source of design classics, ranging from furniture and silverware to vintage watches.

18. Club with the hipsters in Como

If you mix a 'work hard, party hard' ethic and the young, upwardly mobile set of Milan, what do you get? An incessant demand for places in which to party like there's no alarm clock. The city certainly delivers, with pockets of vibrant nightlife in the swanky Corso Como area. At the classic club Hollywood you'll find a transformation going on: although it was once home to the champagne-swilling pinstriped crowd, the club is now embracing the artsy, hip and gay communities. If you fancy a night of wild dancing on the bar, then visit Loolapaloosa. It offers great aperitivos, with heaps of food from the buffet to accompany your cocktail. The outdoor terrace is small but comfy, and the tunes tend to stick to big commercial hits.

19. Kick back with the locals at their favourite lake

In the summertime, relax at Milan's man-made lake, Idroscalo. Originally carved out as a watery landing strip by Mussolini, who thought sea planes were the way forwards, it is now a zone of water, forest and parkland measuring eight square kilometres (three square miles). Its resort conjures up images of Italy's Mediterranean coastline, with beach clubs, barbecue areas and topless sunbathing; the shore is lined with pedalos. Kids like playing in the two large open-air swimming pools and children's pool on the eastern shore (€5 weekdays, €7 weekends). Energetic families can follow the six-kilometre (four-mile) hiking and cycle path around the lake, whereas kids can try the jungle gyms and skateboard ramps by Idroscalo's western Ingresso Villetta entrance; there are teepees, swings and climbing frames for tots nearby.

20. Resurrect Roman Milan

They came, they saw, they built. Although Milan got its name from the Celts who arrived in about 388 BC, it was the Romans who left the oldest marks on the city. You can see their artefacts in several museums, including the Civici Musei del Castello and the Civico Museo Archeologico, and trace their presence in the city itself. The Pinacoteca and Biblioteca Ambrosiana mark the location of the forum, while the watchtowers are still intact in the garden of the Civico Museo Archeologico. On the via de Amicis, you can see the remains of the vast amphitheatre, unearthed in 1935. And the Columns of San Lorenzo, which were probably once part of a temple or civic bathhouse, stand ten metres (33 feet) high on corso di Porta Ticinese. Along with the other monuments, they bring the splendour of Roman rule to life.

Green Lantern – Part Two

Despite the critical success of the Green Arrow team-ups, the period was not a strong one in Hal Jordan’s history. His longtime girlfriend broke up with him, and that sent Hal traveling around the country doing odd jobs here and there. Also during this period, two new back-up Lanterns were introduced.

Guy Gardner premiered in the 1960s and was shown to be Abin Sur’s second choice after Hal for the role of Green Lantern. Stubborn and hot-headed, Guy has had many altercations with his fellow heroes. He’s also gone through a number of changes, among them wielding a yellow power ring and calling himself Warrior. Eventually, Guy Gardner would grow up, and be placed in charge of training the rest of the Green Lantern Corps.

John Stewart premiered in the 1970s and has been the “regular” Green Lantern during times in which Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner resigned their posts or were off world. John is famously the most stable of the Earth bound Green Lanterns, but his tenure has not been without grief. Most notably, he was unable to prevent the destruction of the planet Xanshi, and that failure would plague him for years.

In the 1990s, more change came to the Green Lantern comic. Following the destruction of Coast City by the Cyborg Superman, Hal went insane (this was later blamed on being infected with the parasite Parallax) and tried to destroy and remake the universe. Though ultimately unsuccessful, Hal caused plenty of other damage during his insane and evil days. He killed Sinestro, destroyed the Green Lantern Corps, and annihilated all but one of the Guardians. Though most of this damage was later retconned away, many longtime fans were truly disturbed and upset by the evil turn of their hero.

When Earth’s sun was threatened by a sun-eater, Hal redeemed his evil ways by nobly sacrificing himself to save Earth. Still not earning his rest, Jordan came back as the Spectre, the Spirit of God’s Vengeance for several years. This would change in the storyline Green Lantern: Rebirth, during which Hal Jordan came back to life and was freed from the influence of Parallax.

In the aftermath of Hal Jordan’s turn to the dark side, the one remaining member of the Guardians of the Universe, Ganthet, sought out a new Green Lantern. He chose Kyle Rayner, a young freelance artist from New York. Kyle’s painful introduction to the world of superheroing began shortly thereafter, when the villain Major Force killed his girlfriend, Alexandra DeWitt. A large bulk of Kyle’s storylines have dealt with his guilt over not being able to save her, and that guilt grew as other loved ones came into harm’s way and Kyle was unable to prevent their harm.

On a brighter note, Kyle has been a member of both the Titans and the Justice League of America. One of his closest friends was Connor Hawke, the second Green Arrow.

For a time, Kyle absorbed more energy than he could handle and he became the godlike entity known as Ion. Ultimately, after a heart to heart with Superman, Kyle decided to relinquish those powers. The excess energy Kyle relinquished was used to restart the central power battery on Oa and to help give life again to the Guardians of the Universe. This would be an important step in rebuilding the Green Lantern Corps to their former glory, one of the major current themes in the Green Lantern comics.

The powers and abilities of the Green Lanterns have depended on who is wielding the ring, but the power ring can be used to construct any object in the wielder’s imagination. In addition, it has given wearers the power of flight, telepathic abilities, radiation generation, invisibility, and force field generation.

Hal Jordan, Alan Scott, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Kyle Rayner are all currently alive and well in the DC comic book universe. Alan Scott enjoys his post as one of the elder members of the Justice Society of America while Hal and John continue to take turns patrolling Earth in service to the Guardians. Kyle and Guy are currently primarily off Earth, helping to rebuild the Green Lantern Corps in their own way.

Do you need a MFA to get a full time job in either animation or illustration?

Is it better to get an MFA for an art job or do most artists just stop at college (with a BFA). Is this required for animators or comic book artists? Is it also required for people who want to write in this industry?

Maybe required isn't the best word; more like do most artists go for their MFA or do they tend to stop after college?

If you plan on teaching illustration it wouldn't hurt to continue your education. However, like most artists responding to this will tell you, getting a job in the industry relies on two very important things...1) a top notch portfolio 2) networking. A degree will not neccessarily get your foot in the door or show employers that you can do the work.

Billion Dollar Animation Industry

Billion Dollar Animation Industry

The Second Golden Age of Animation is creating enormous revenues from both box office gross to billions of dollars in sales generated by all manner of kids’ products spinning off from Intellectual Properties aimed at the kiddy market, products that range from the bizarre (Spongebob) to the sublime (Harry Potter).

When was the First Golden Age of Animation? This was a period in American animation history beginning in 1928 that began with the introduction of sound cartoons. It continued into the early 1960s when the introduction of this new medium of television animation drew audiences away from cinemas. It was during these years that an impressive number of Animation Properties came into being; such characters as Tom and Jerry, Superman, Woody Woodpecker, Felix the Cat as well as a huge range of Disney characters.

Walt Disney's first films; Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Bambi came into being during this era.

What then is the Second Golden Age of Animation? It is happening today. Traditional animation, called cell animation, had been the standard since the 1920’s. Very labor intensive, cell animation was the backbone of the Disney corporation production facility and other companies such as Hanna Barbera. The introduction of computers, while slow to take hold, has completely changed the face of animation production taking animation from two dimensional characters to three dimensional images that are more realistic, easier to manipulate and store and most importantly, are the backbone of the huge video gaming market.

Animated films have far outstripped other genres in home video and DVD sales in the last fifteen years with retail dollars now capturing 32% of total sales, far ahead of second place comedy at 20% according to the Producer To Producer Book, 2nd Edition. In recent years, the licensing and merchandising industry driven by animated television series targeted at children has performed beyond most industry expectations. An excellent case in point, the children’s craze, Pokemon, surpassed accumulated worldwide sales of $10.0 Billion by 2001. Licensing and Merchandising revenues are expected to exceed $100 Billion annually by the year 2010 fueled by such monster hits as Shrek 2 - $881 Million Dollars, Finding Nemo - $865 Million and The Incredibles - $624 Million to name just three.

The target market for children's television and films is the 50 million plus 4 - 12 year old North American kids whose buying power for toys, games and puzzles was approximately U.S.$13.4 billion per year in the nineties and now in excess of $200 Billion a year. The secondary markets are Europe, Asia and the Pacific region where North American companies have traditionally experienced success with many movie driven properties.

Kids buying power grew 12% over the 90’s and is expected to continue at a double digit growth rate well into the 2000’s. So dramatic was this growth of the Kids market that marketers dubbed the 90's as the "Decade of the Child".  In response to this phenomenon, more and more toys, clothes, food and entertainment products are being developed for this huge and growing market.  The companies involved in producing children's live and animated productions have now identified this Kid’s market as the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and now team up with toy companies and other manufacturers to exploit this lucrative ancillary market with an unimaginable number of products ranging from downloadable clips for cell phones to video games to social networking websites.

Computer generated films are now the driving force behind the enormous jump in sales of toys, electronic games and the multitude of other products aimed at the kid and tween market. items.

What does the future hold in this new Golden Age of Animation? Producers, manufacturers, distributors and kids are always on the lookout for that next new product. What will that be? As usual, it’s anybody’s guess. Who would have thought that some years ago, adults would be fist fighting over something called Cabbage Patch Dolls? Whatever the next hit is, it will no doubt be spawned from the depths of a computer chip.

Marvel Comics Spider Man

FIVE OF THE LAMEST VILLAINS IN MARVEL COMICS

In a universe full of some of the greatest superheroes that ever lived you'd think all we'd get would be the toughest villains in marvel comics.  However, that is not always the case.  Sometimes we get the absolute lamest villains in marvel comics.  The list is long if you look back over the many decades marvel has been publishing comics, but here are five that just really stand out from the rest.

EEL

This guy's claim to the lamest villains in marvel comics is that he's basically a poor man's version of the Spider-Man villains Shocker or Electro.   He has no powers and no special skills save being decent at hand-to-hand combat.  He just has a grease covered suit that can shoot electricity.  Not to mention the costume was poorly conceived and just looks lame.  This guy didn't stand a chance.

MATADOR

When talking about the lamest villains in marvel comics you can't leave this guy off.  He was literally just a matador.  He carried a sword, but had no powers and no special suits, yet he took Daredevil down.  I don't know what marvel was thinking with this one, but he shouldn't even be considered one of the villains in marvel comics, he should just be a stupid guy who got too big for his britches.

STILT-MAN

Another one of the sad villains in marvel comics Daredevil had to contend with, this guy just had a suit with long legs more or less.  No powers, no enhancements, and he was disposed of quickly even back then when lame villains in marvel comics were standard fare.  Shame, marvel, shame.

LEAP-FROG

Villains in marvel comics were lame by the dozens back in the day, and this one is no exception.  The only thing that made this guy a villain was a backpack/exoskeleton that enabled him to leap long distances.  No other powers or abilities, he could just jump a lot.  Poor Spider-Man was riddled with some lame animal-themed villains in marvel comics.

WALRUS

Speaking of Spider-Man villains in marvel comics, this was another one of the unfortunate buffoons the wall-crawler had to contend with.  Dressed in a suit that resembled a walrus, this guy wasn't bent on world domination or even thievery.  All he cared about was property damage.  He had some enhanced strength, but mainly the guy liked doing crossword puzzles and did no real harm.  This definitely lands him a place in the lamest villains in marvel comics.

And these are just scratching the surface.  There are plenty of other lame villains in marvel comics.  What marvel was thinking back then is anyone's guess.  Yes, the books were more kid-friendly in those days, but kids aren't that dumb.

Brother Malcolm X Shabazz

Biography – Brother Malcolm X Shabazz

Born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska, his mother, Louise Little, was a housewife and mother of eight. Earl Little, his father, was a supporter of Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. Malcolm's outspoken Baptist preacher father gave street corner speeches promoting the need for black people to move "Back to Africa," which was Garvey's major ideal.

Little's activism attracted unfavorable attention from a white supremacist organization called the Black Legion, an offshoot of the extremely racist Ku Klux Klan. Malcolm's family had to move twice before he was four years old, so his early beginnings well acquainted him with racism, politics and morbid worries over the lives of his relatives.

In 1929 their Lansing, Michigan home was burned down, and two years later, Earl Little was killed. It was thought that two men, members of the Black Legion, had found him in a local bar, hit him over the back of the head, and murdered him by laying him on trolley tracks in front of a streetcar. Little had two life insurance policies out on himself, but the authorities ruled that his death was a suicide. Another time, Ku Klux Klan members rode up to their house, and Louise Little had to grab a shotgun and point it at them to make them leave. Malcolm had tried a moment before to grab the shotgun himself. It wouldn't be the first time he was kept from using a gun on his enemies.

Malcolm's mother suffered a major emotional breakdown several years after the death of her husband. She was then committed to a mental institution, and she was in and out of such institutions for 26 years. Her children were sent out to a variety of foster homes and orphanages. Malcolm, an especially bright "middle" child, had been the only one for whom his family had bought eyeglasses; thus the famous bespectacled looks of Malcolm X were born.

Malcolm was a terrific student and scored high on all of his tests, graduating from junior high with top honors. However, a favorite female teacher of his dashed his dreams of becoming a lawyer, telling him it was not a "realistic goal for a nigger." After that, Malcolm dropped out, moving to Boston, Massachusetts, where he working odd jobs such as shoe shining. Tiring of low paying, unrealistically drab jobs, he traveled to Harlem, New York – where he began his infamous life in the Black Underworld of petty crimes. He was managing various narcotics, prostitution and gambling rings by 1942, having started in the seamy underground life as a "gay" male prostitute and pimp just to make his living. One time he broke into a pawn shop, stealing only a watch.

Malcolm formed a partnership with another man, "Shorty" Jarvis. They moved back to Boston, and in 1946 they were arrested and convicted on burglary charges. Malcolm was sentenced to ten years in prison but was paroled after serving seven years. A romantic story was made up about how he had robbed a bank by using a gun loaded with blanks, and that he'd done it for the love of a beautiful white woman, just to get media coverage.

In reality, he used his jail time to further his education, reading books in the prison library. One of these books was the Koran, the holy book of Islam, and Malcolm's brother Reginald would visit him in prison and assist him with converting to the Moslem religion. Reginald Little belonged to the Nation of Islam - and he was quite enthusiastic about it.

Elijah Muhammad was the Nation of Islam leader who initially attracted Malcolm's attention. Muhammad's teachings were that white people were purposefully keeping black people in America from political, economic and social power, justice and success. The Nation of Islam was fighting for a section of the country to become Black America, separate from the part of the USA controlled by white people. Malcolm decided to become a devout Muslim and follower of Muhammad, and changed his last name from Little to X. He hated the name Little, which he considered to be a slave name, and Muhammad's giving him the name of "X" meant a lot to him.

He was finally paroled in 1952, and as he was very handsome, bright and articulate, he was immediately appointed a minister and national spokesman for the Nation of Islam. He became a media darling, having a tall, youthful and charismatic presence on camera, and he was seen as the best possible Nation of Islam spokesperson. Elijah Muhammad had him establish mosques in several cities, such as Detroit and Harlem, and Malcolm X used newspapers, radio and television to get the Nation of Islam's political ideology across to Black America and others. His drive, conviction, obvious honesty in his political ideology and extreme devotion to the cause attracted a huge number of new members to the Nation of Islam, swelling its membership from 500 in 1952 to 30,000 in 1963. It is purported that he met his wife to be, Betty Sanders, outside of a radio station in a hallway around this period of time, but they probably actually met after a speech Malcolm X gave at a Harlem Islamic temple.

The mounting controversy surrounding the brilliant young black militant leader got him featured in a TV special with Mike Wallace in 1959, "The Hate that Hate Produced." The program touted Malcolm X as one of the Nation of Islam's most prominent leaders. His fame (or infamy) had begun to succeed beyond that of his leader, Elijah Muhammad, which may have caused some jealousy on Muhammad's part. The younger, sexier Malcolm X attracted beautiful women, which Muhammad wanted.

As racial tensions due to segregation and the civil rights movement mounted during the turbulent sixties, Malcolm X captured the government's attention, as well as the FBI's. Like they were doing with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., they infiltrated his organization, placing bugs, wiretaps and cameras around their headquarters and homes to monitor the Nation of Islam's activities. As membership in the NOI increased, an FBI member even became Malcolm X's personal bodyguard. Stories about affairs Malcolm X was having with fellow male members of the Nation of Islam began freely circulating in the country.

In 1963, Malcolm X learned that Elijah Muhammad, who was still his leader in the NOI, was having relationships with six women within the organization, all young and beautiful, and some of those relationships had born children out of wedlock. Malcolm X, being a political and social conservative who fought for the rights of women to dress in a conservative and non revealing manner, was highly disgusted by Muhammad's behavior. He wanted his leader to be censured, perhaps even dismissed.

Malcolm X proclaimed he had stuck with the teachings of Islam, which included remaining celibate until his marriage to Betty Sanders in 1958. Obviously he had not been a virgin when he'd gotten married, as he had lived life in the Black Underworld for several years, but he claimed that he had at least tried to maintain a conservative life once he'd converted. So Malcolm X denied Muhammad's attempts to cover up his affairs, blasting claims about them to the media. He said he was deeply affronted by his leader's actions, as he had considered him to be "the living prophet of God." He stated he felt guilt ridden about helping so many people join the NOI, an organization he said he now believed was built on lies, deception, unfair practices and dishonesty.

Around this time, Malcolm X made a comment regarding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1961. "He never foresaw the chickens would come home to roost," was the famous comment where the media and public lost a lot of sympathy for Malcolm X and his cause. And Elijah Muhammad had Malcolm X formally "silenced" for ninety days, although Malcolm X claimed it was for other reasons. So in March of 1964, Malcolm X formally terminated his membership in the Nation of Islam, founding an altogether new religious organization, the Muslim Mosque. And that same year, Malcolm X went on his first formal pilgrimage to Mecca, which is what devout Moslems are supposed to do at least once during their lifetimes.

He said the pilgrimage, also known as "the Hajj," was "the most positive experience of my life," and found himself expressing his beliefs, thoughts and ideas with many diverse people of many diverse cultures, several of whom were white people. For the first time, Malcolm X felt he could communicate with blonde, blue eyed people he could even call his "brothers in Islam." This experience changed his mind completely about integration, making him give up on the idea of a United States internal Black Nation and giving him hope for a better future.

The idea of a separate country within the United States was seen by then as highly impractical anyway, so now when Malcolm X gave speeches, he was going to preach to all races, not just African Americans. It was during this devout Moslem holy walk that local Moslems gave Malcolm his Sunni Muslim last name, Shabazz; now he had a real last name, not just a symbol. Still, he would always be more typically known by the name Malcolm X. He and his wife both declared themselves to be Sunni Moslems.

While he was on the pilgrimage to Mecca, he discussed his difficult official position with the members of the NOI, who had been discussing plots to kill him. "I know they are going to kill me," he told his wife Betty. "Take care of the children for me." He said he had faith he would see her and their children again someday, in the Heaven of Islam. The FBI also warned their officials Malcolm X had been marked for assassination, as an undercover official had been ordered by the NOI to plant a bomb in his car.

There had been repeated attempt on the life of Malcolm X all through it, from his birth on, and he was getting "used to it" somewhat. He was born with a naturally ruddy hair color, which he hated, as it proved he was part white; it caused his buddies to call him "Detroit Red" as a nickname. In the courtroom, he had denounced his white heritage and his ruddy hair. One time his friends "conked" his hair to make it an even red color, which looked somewhat unnatural.

Malcolm X often used to say he wished he was completely Negro or African American - or perhaps mostly so - and part Native American. He claimed some of his bushy red hair was a result of being part Indian, and a quote of his involved Black Americans being crushed under Plymouth Rock. At one time, he painted a picture of a very large blue black flower, sort of a rose, covering the entire picture canvas. It seems to have represented how much he wanted to be "blue black," or totally black.

It looked somewhat also like a gun blast, which is what he figured would end his life, and it would have signified the Scottish "flower of manhood." This is supposedly the male chest, which is where he was shot during his assassination, with the several gun blasts also exploding out his back. However, during an alleged first attempt to assassinate him, he was also stabbed in the chest four times. There is a photo of how he was given a "bum's rush" by Nation of Islam members, being pulled along down a building's interior hallway in a row of black men, with his long tie flapping around the supposed stab wounds, but he didn't die of this. At any rate, he did end up being mortally wounded in the chest, which may explain his painting of a blossoming "flower of manhood" - in black and blue.

I recall also seeing a Black Comics cartoon of a white boy looking version of Malcolm X, surrounded by three Negro but odd looking men, who looked intent to harm him. He seemed to be screaming loudly in sexual pleasure. I don't know who did that cartoon, or what was meant by it exactly.

Malcolm X actually usually traveled with bodyguards, but as said before, one of them was even an FBI infiltrator. Nobody knew where Malcolm X was going to be killed; it was only a question of when. In February of 1965, Malcolm X's family's house, a small one in East Elmhurst, New York, was firebombed, one week before he was assassinated. No one was hurt by the firebombing, but the assassination on February 21 was a success.

Harlem's Audubon Ballroom was packed to the rafters for a speech by the famous Malcolm X Shabazz, one where he was going to pay tribute to his father by once again affirming his own ties to the Back to Africa Movement. His friend Alex Haley, who had helped him write "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," was a proponent of going back to Africa, as were many other African Americans.

As Malcolm X was speaking, three gunmen rushed the stage, firing directly into his chest fifteen times. The entire crowd at the ballroom, including Malcolm X's wife, Betty X Shabazz, raced up to the podium, but it was too late. Betty cradled his dying body in her arms. She stated later that his bare, exploded and scarlet dead chest was "a pitiful sight." Four of their girl children were unfortunately present at the scene.

Only 39 years old, the same age as the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would be when he was shot in 1968, Brother Malcolm X Shabazz was pronounced dead at New York's Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. Almost two thousand people attended the funeral, which was held in Harlem about one week later at the Faith Temple Church. His friends insisted on burying Malcolm X themselves, rather than letting white gravediggers do it, so they took away the shovels and buried him. This was at the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. Just a few months later, Betty gave birth to twin daughters, which were Malcolm X's; they had a total of six children, all of whom were daughters. Some say they had two more children, boys.

The three assassins were Talmadge Hayer, Norman 3X Butler and Thomas 15X Johnson. They were convicted of first degree murder in 1966, and purportedly sentenced to die. Two of them were captured at the scene, and all three were members of the Nation of Islam.

It is thought the death of Betty X's husband was ordered by a superior in the group. The Nation of Islam was a large group of African Americans forced to reorder their priorities in a country dominated by white racial supremacists, murderers, thieves, prostitutes and many other weird people who seemed to be "out to get them" or stop them from leading anything like healthy, moral lives. There is an story that some black people tried to set Malcolm X up with a job sprinkling talcum powder for sex kicks on a dirty old man. It's said that he refused the job, and that was the beginning of him reclaiming himself.

There have been many documentaries, books and movies about the legend that was Malcolm X. A lot of the stories about him have been proven to be untrue, urban legends that sprouted up about the Nation of Islam's and Black America's charismatic and forceful young leader. There was quite a resurgence of interest in Malcolm X in 1992, when director Spike Lee released the nationwide movie "Malcolm X," starring Denzel Washington. The film received two Oscar nominations, but was mostly seen in its paid version by African American crowds – white people didn't seem to want to see it for unknown reasons.

Malcolm X - Wife and Family

Nobody seems to know about Betty Sanders early life and family background. She was born, however, in Detroit, Michigan, and is the daughter of Shelman Sandlin and a woman named Sanders. Sanders was an illegitimate child, one with a troubled upbringing, and she was given over to foster parents, growing up in a nice, middle class house in Detroit. Due to her difficult childhood, she devoted her life to African American childcare, health and sexual education.

Betty moved to NYC to get away from the narrow minded views of the white South, studying nursing at Brooklyn State Hospital. One night, her friends took her to hear Malcolm X speak about the Nation of Islam at an Islamic temple in Harlem. Essence Magazine, a magazine specifically for American black women, stated in 1992 that Betty's friend offered to introduce her to Malcolm X after he was done speaking.

Betty's reaction to that was "Big deal!" But she went to the speech. She later continued in the interview: "But then, I looked over, and saw this man on the extreme right aisle sort of galloping to the podium. He was tall, he was thin, and the way he was galloping, it looked as though he was going someplace much more important than the podium…well, he got to the podium, and I sat up straight."

Betty was quite impressed with Malcolm X's speech. Afterwards, she caught him backstage, and they discussed racism in Alabama. She started attending all of his speeches and lectures, and by the time she graduated nursing school, she was a member of the Nation of Islam. As Elijah Muhammad bestowed the last name "X" on all of his followers, she was now Betty X, like Malcolm X, no longer encumbered with "a slave name."

During this entire time, the relatives that Malcolm had lost pervaded his consciousness. The man kept losing relatives in an extremely bitter battle with the authorities - due to his family being seen as territorial hostiles in America. They were the descendants of slaves. This gave them an inerasable sense of lost innocence and deep bitterness. Always forced into a position of fighting back without being technically allowed to do so, having been forced out of all positions of power except for some limited religious authority, they tried their best in a sea of remote possibilities to figure out how to deal with life and death.

When Betty X went on the pilgrimage to Mecca with her husband, she also was given the Muslim last name Shabazz, becoming Betty X Shabazz.

Their family survived the firebombing of their home - due to Malcolm X's activism - outside of Queens, New York. On February 21, 1965, Betty X and her four girls witnessed the assassination in Harlem's Audubon Ballroom. It was reported Betty X covered her children with her own body on the ballroom floor as the fifteen shots rang out; people admired her remarkable courage. She had known her husband's death was imminent.

In his book about Malcolm X, "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," Alex Haley wrote: "Sister Betty came through the people, herself a nurse, and those recognizing her moved back. She fell on her knees, looking down at his bare, bullet pocked chest, sobbing, ‘They killed him!'"

Malcolm X was purportedly survived by six to eight children. Needing to replenish themselves with as many children as possible, they were caught in a moment of time, in a continuous battle with the authorities. And yet, they fought back and won in many ways, most of which were nonviolent. There is a photograph of Malcolm X holding a twenty gauge shotgun near a window outside his home at the time, and in an interview, he said he would very much like to "kill me up some crackers," meaning white people.

At least the two of them, Brother Malcolm X Shabazz and Sister Betty X Shabazz, met and loved each other, however briefly. They became a famous and beloved pair, about whom one story says they met during the taping of a Nation of Islam radio show, and another story says they met after a speech given by Malcolm X. At any rate, they finally made it to being with each other. This is an event which many people born on this Earth are not fortunate enough to enjoy in the course of their lifetimes.

Their daughter Ilyasah Shabazz wrote a famous autobiography, "Growing Up X," and after Malcolm X's assassination, she said her mother received lots of help from wealthy friends and celebrities. They purchased a large, beautiful home in Mount Vernon, New York for their family. Ilyasah Shabazz writes that her mother Betty X worked hard to provide for all her children, and that they led sheltered, upper middle class lives. They had luxuries such as housekeepers, chauffeured cares, exclusive social clubs, and expensive, mostly white private schools, tutors, and summer camps.

Malcolm X – Brief List of Achievements

About a year after he was paroled, in 1953, Malcolm X was named minister at the Nation of Islam's Boston mosque. The next year, he became the minister at two other Moslem temples, one in Philadelphia and the other in New York City. "Muhammad Speaks," the Nation of Islam newspaper, was begun by Malcolm X in 1957, and beginning in the sixties, he was asked to participate in several debates. These included forums on radio stations (Los Angeles, New York, and Washington), television programs ("Open Mind" and "The Mike Wallace News Program") and universities (Harvard Law School, Howard University, and Columbia University).

Malcolm X befriended and was the minister for the famous heavyweight champion Cassius Clay, and he helped him convert and join the Nation of Islam. Clay announced that his new name was Muhammad Ali in February of 1964. And in March of 1964, after he left the Nation of Islam, Malcolm formed the Moslem Mosque; months later, he also organized the Organization of Afro American Unity.

"The Autobiography of Malcolm X," which was worked on for two years with his friend writer Alex Haley of "Roots" TV miniseries fame, was published posthumously in November of 1965. The book tells many stories which have since been under dispute, but the end of the book contained scenes from the real assassination of Brother Malcolm X Shabazz.

Movie Review - Watchment

WATCHMEN REVIEW

Let me start by saying that after seeing Watchmen, I understand why the reviews were so polarizing.  I understand how someone could watch it and hate it.  I also understand why someone could love it.  I myself fall into the latter category.  I freaking loved it!  It was one of the best (if not the best) cinematic experiences of my life.  Words and star ratings can’t truly describe what a masterpiece this film is, but I’m going to try.  Using the traditional four star rating system, I give Watchmen five stars.  Yes my friends… it is that good.

Visually the film is astonishing.  There is not one frame of the movie that fails to draw the eye.  The special effects were spectacular.  Every angle that director, Zack Snyder (my new god) employs is both breath taking and original, from the spectacularly staged fight at the beginning of the movie to the very last shot of the film.  Truly amazing stuff.  It is visual poetry in motion.  The opening credit sequence sets up the story with photos that can only be described as living and breathing.  Each photo slowly comes to life in slow motion and it is truly breath taking.  I felt as though I was truly watching a comic book brought to life.  Forget Sin CityWatchmen is the comic adaption that truly breaks all the rules.  There is not one moment in this film that feels clichéd or borrowed.  Back to Zack Snyder for a moment.  As many of you know, I’m not a big fan of his last film, 300.  Visually 300 was a wonderful achievement, but in terms of story and plot, I felt it was sorely lacking.  After the first 40 minutes, 300 becomes one gigantic battle sequence.  I didn’t care about the characters and after awhile the violence was mind numbing, regardless of how cool it looked.  This made me think of Zack Snyder as a visual wizard with no real storytelling ability.  Kind of like the new Tim Burton.  Watchmen changed my opinion of Snyder completely.  The film is so rich in story that it takes a master filmmaker to tell it so well.  The way Snyder weaves it all together and leaves no plot point unturned is magnificent.  Watchmen in almost anyone else’s hands probably would’ve been a disaster.  The highest praise I can throw at Snyder is that he is the new Steven Spielberg.  He is the guy who is transforming cinema as we know it.

If you were to take X-Men, Pulp Fiction and Memento and throw them in a blender, you might get Watchmen.  Each character is fully fleshed out with clever back stories told in flashbacks ala Pulp, but the flashbacks are not linear.  They are almost sideways.  In fact Memento is pretty paint by the numbers in comparison.  I include X-Men as one of the ingredients only because I can’t think of another comic book film that focuses on a team that isn’t cheesy like Fantastic Four for example.  In fact, Watchmen actually tarnishes my opinion of the X-Men films.  Watchmen manages to truly bring the heroes to life and humanize them, whereas most of the characters in the X-Men movies are under developed, with the exception of Wolverine.

The acting in the film is superb with each performer lending weight and gravity to their characters.  Special shout outs to Jackie Earle Haley and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, both of whom deliver Oscar caliber performances.  There is too much to say about how great this film truly is and it is nearly impossible to say it, without giving plot points away, so I’ll stop here.  Suffice it to say, if it sounds like I’m gushing, it’s because I am.  It was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen and I wish I was watching it again right now as I’m sitting here writing this.  Those of you who have been debating what the best comic book film of all time is need look no further.  Watchmen stands tall, towering  above them all.

Iron Man 2: Public Identity #1 Review

So far, Marvel has published two comic projects set within the Iron Man movie universe - I Am Iron Man and and Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas. It's been a rather bumpy ride for this corner of Iron Man's publishing realm thus far. Luckily, the third time proves to be the charm. Iron Man 2: Public Identity is far more successful than its predecessors in most ways.
