100 Greatest Comic Book Characters

20 Years With the Simpsons

Matt Groening, created the animated sitcom, “The Simpsons” for Fox Broadcasting Company. The idea came from the lobby of James L. Brooks's office and that’s how this popular adaptation of a dysfunctional family came about. Even the characters were named after his own family members, with the exception of lead character Bart.

On April 19, 1987, “The Simpsons” made their first appearance as shorts in The Tracey Ullman Show. When the initial submission was made, only basic sketches were handed in expecting they would be refined in production stages but they were left as is and that’s the reason why despite modification over the years the Simpsons still have a very rudimentary façade. On December 17, 1989, "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire” was the half-hour premiere show.

The Simpsons has been debated since the start with lead character Bart often going scot-free despite wrong doings and this portrayed him as a poor role model for youngsters. It’s portrayal of the middle class American lifestyle symbolized by family members Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie Simpson. The backdrop of the show is the fictional town of Springfield, which is filled with characters, and events that are an animated and inspired from American society. Homer Simpson the father is employed as a safety inspector at Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. Often his job is at risk as a result of his casual and comic nature. His wife, Marge is a conventional American housewife and mother. Their 3 children are Bart, a ten-year-old menace, Lisa, an aware 8 year old activist and the baby Maggie, who hardly speaks but does communicate by sucking on a pacifier. They have a dog called Santa's Little Helper, and a cat, called Snowball II. Over the years, the show has celebrated even ts but the characters have not aged since the start of the show.

The Simpsons have influenced mainstream society in more ways than one. Language and terms used in this animated sitcom has made its transition into popular everyday vernacular. To the extent that Homer Simpsons popular use of the expression ‘D'oh!’ is listed in the Oxford English Dictionary without its apostrophe. Even the use of the term ‘excellent’ pronounced as ‘eexcelllent’ in the show is used by people around us. The term ‘cheese-eating surrender monkeys"’ referring to the French has been used by popularly by conservative National Review columnist Jonah Goldberg in 2003, when the French opposed the invasion of Iraq proposal. And soon it was popular lingo amongst journalists.

The Simpsons is a legendary show in respect to prime time television programs. This is because initially animated shows were thought to be for kids and airing a complete animated program on prime time for universal viewing was a bold step. Though thought to be an expensive idea, The Simpsons were aired successfully because they cut down on expenses by using Korean animation studios for in-betweening, coloring, and filming. The success of The Simpsons show prompted many others to start animated shows of this nature and for prime time viewing. In its time it has certainly been a pioneering show if its type and still stands tall. In fact the Simpsons are so respected that when South Park achieved success on television they aired an episode “Simpsons Already Did It" as homage to its predecessor.

The Simpsons have been awarded at many occasions. Their booty consists of 23 Emmy Awards, 24 Annie Awards and a Peabody Award. The TIME magazines 1998 publication commemorating the 20th Century's greatest achievements in arts and entertainment, named The Simpsons as the last century's best television series, along with naming Bart Simpson in the list of the century's 100 most influential people. Incidentally Bart was the only imaginary character on the list. At the turn of this century the Simpsons won a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They have also been acclaimed as the greatest television show of the 1990s, 2001's 100 Greatest Kids' TV shows, and 2005's 100 Greatest Cartoons. Homer Simpson has been recognized as the forerunner in 2001's 100 Greatest TV Characters. Other awards include the TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time, and a mention in the TIME's list of 100 Best TV Shows of All Time.

In 2004, they became the longest-running American animated sitcom in the United States. Regardless of criticism over the years, The Simpsons maintains a huge viewer base. The shows first season enjoyed an average of 13.4 million viewers, and the 17th season had an average of 9.2 million viewers per episode, respectively. The Simpsons Movie made $74 million in its opening weekend in the US.

In the end of the last century a number of US public schools banned ‘The Simpsons’ merchandise and t-shirts. In spite of the ban, their merchandise still continued to be popular and generated US$2 billion in revenue in its first 14 months of sales. Their popularity paved the way for them in turning into a billion-dollar merchandizing industry.

Merchandise includes everything you can imagine, from t-shirts to posters. The iconic characters have inspired unique editions of board games, including Clue, Scrabble, Monopoly, Operation, and The Game of Life. Trivia and card games have also been introduced. There are Simpsons comic books and related publications, including 9 comic book series from Bongo Comics publication. The comics have also been made available in book form and there’s episode guides too. There’s numerous soundtrack and other musical releases including music that’s’ not been aired on the show. You can purchase The Simpsons Movie DVDs and DVD boxsets. You can buy video of episodes that have been aired. Seasons one to ten have been released on DVD in many continents. You can even buy The Simpsons video games. This includes The Simpsons, The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants, The Simpsons Road Rage, The Simpsons Hit & Run and The Simpsons Game (2007).

Can anyone list the comic books issues that prove Angela and Spawn's romantic relationship?

I've read a few comic books from the Spawn universe, and have always been intrigued by the titular character's (al Simmons) relationship with Angela. I've read on wikipedia that the two had a romantic relationship before she was killed in Spawn #100. Can anyone list and enumerate the comic book series and issues that show this relationship? Actually, it would be great if anyone could list all her appearances, in all series. Thanks.

They sleep together in the Angela mini-series. Her first appearance was in Spawn #9. She also made a very brief appearance in the Spawn movie.

Is "Future Shock" Already Upon Us ?

In 1970, Alvin Toffler's book "Future Shock" predicted a world in which technology evolved so quickly society was stunned, unable to adjust, succumbing to "shattering stress and disorientation". A decade later, John Naisbitt took a less cataclysmic look, focused on the next decade, with "Megatrends - Ten New Directions Transforming Our Lives"; he updated that in 1990 with "Megatrends 2000".

Toffler proved to be both right and wrong. "Future Shock" did attack millions of people, but primarily those in the newly freed nations of the former Soviet Bloc, especially Russia itself. Hundreds of immigrants pouring out of those nations to the United States in the 1990s reportedly returned complaining about "too much choice".

Even a worldly British author and high tech consultant who spent the 1990s living and working in Southern California and Washington, DC, will soon publish a book about his American experience that includes a chapter on how even Western Europeans can be overwhelmed by American-style consumerism. The working title? "A Cornucopia of Confusing Consumer Choices: Forty-Five Types of Shredded Wheat?"

What Toffler failed to foresee was the ease with which Americans, Canadians and, within the dominion of their own societies, the rest of the "developed" world not only would accept but often demand faster implementation of new technologies. Generations raised on Star Trek and Star Wars did not merely anticipate desktop computers, instant global information access, hand-held global "communicators" and robots, they built them.

Some of Naisbitt's predictions, such as a rise in home-based "networking", were amazingly on target, especially considering he never used the words Internet, e-mail, global positioning system (GPS) - none of which as yet existed - nor terrorism, arguably four of the most important factors driving late 20th and early 21st Century society.

Perhaps the most astounding - and controversial - look at our technology-based future came in 2001, when Ray Kurzweil, one of the world's most honored inventors, authors and futurists, published his "Law of Accelerating Returns".

"An analysis of the history of technology shows that technological change is exponential, contrary to the common-sense 'intuitive linear' view. So we won't experience 100 years of progress in the 21st Century - it will be more like 20,000 years of progress (at today's rate). The 'returns', such as chip speed and cost-effectiveness, also increase exponentially. There's even exponential growth in the rate of exponential growth. Within a few decades, machine intelligence will surpass human intelligence, leading to The Singularity - technological change so rapid and profound it represents a rupture in the fabric of human history. The implications include the merger of biological and non-biological intelligence, immortal software-based humans and ultra-high levels of intelligence that expand outward in the universe at the speed of light."

And that is only the opening paragraph! (The entire piece is available at http://www.kurzweilai.net/articles/art0134.html?printable=1).

Kurzweil's "law" helps explain what Toffler feared and Naisbitt sought to analyze. As to whether Kurzweil is qualified to make such bold statements, consider his remarkable biography at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Kurzweil. Or simply Microsoft chairman Bill Gates' 2005 description of him as "the best at predicting the future of artificial intelligence".

Given Kurzweil's Law, Naisbitt's "Megatrends" and Toffler's "Future Shock" already are being dwarfed by the speed of technological advance. Any new version of either book would have to be electronically published to avoid being comically out-of-date before ever reaching a bookstore.

Consider a few examples of where we are headed in the next 20 years or so:

Military doctors already are looking to field, within a decade, an early version of Star Trek's medical tricorder - not hoping, not expecting, but planning.

The US Army's Future Warrior, the combat infantry ensemble circa 2020, has been called everything from a futuristic medieval knight's suit of armor to a Star Wars' Imperial Trooper. But Future Warrior is an evolutionary process, with the first elements now on their way to US troops in Southwest Asia, for whom small robots that perform dangerous tasks such as checking for explosives at roadblocks already are considered honored and invaluable teammates.

Hydrogen fuel cells the size of soda cans have been powering TV field cameras for the past two years; people all over the globe can flip open their own "communicators" and not only talk to anyone anywhere, but take and send photos and movies, listen to music, download information, send and receive text messages, obtain precise GPS locations - even Mr. Spock would be likely to raise an eyebrow and mutter, "Fascinating".

Kurzweil's Singularity foresees a time - perhaps within the next two decades - when it will be possible to download a human being's memories and personality into a computer. Add an advanced and highly realistic avatar based on that individual's actual appearance (at any age) and an equally accurate voice synthesizer and it will be possible to have a real-time, original conversation with a dead relative or teacher. Imagine Einstein or Mozart or da Vinci preserved for all time.

The religious implications, of course, are obvious, as are the legal and societal: With AI Grandpa still own his house? Will flesh-and-blood Grandma be able to remarry? Is erasing an AI personality disk murder? And for writers and publishers, if copyrights continue for 70 years after the author's death, is an AI author dead - or immortal?

Nanotechnology - microscopic machines - and microbiology are expected to combine to enable the repair of almost anything that goes wrong with any part of the body. No chemotherapy, no contact lenses, no open heart surgery, just an injection of thousands of tiny robotic surgeons programmed to deal with the problem.

Experiments already have been performed to enable two people to share sensory perceptions. In others, robotic limbs have been activated by subjects thinking about moving their own arms or legs. Such bioelectronic advances are expected to enable quadriplegics to walk away from their wheelchairs, possibly within a generation.

Consider:

- In 1906 we had just witnessed the first flight of a heavier-than-air manned aircraft, a flight that lasted less than the wingspan of a Boeing 747. Six decades later, we were walking on the Moon.

- In 1906, few people had access to a very cumbersome, expensive and unreliable telephone system and radio was still an experiment; today, you can watch television on your cellphone.

- In 1906, the average life expectancy in the US was 46.9 for men, 50.8 for women; today, it is 74.5 for men and 79.9 for women, according to US government tables. But many futurists say for those of us now living, the trick will simply be to live long enough . . to live forever - which they believe the merger of biology and technology will make possible, in one form or another, within a generation.

"Future Shock" and "Megatrends" were products of the late 20th Century, when Kurzweil's Law of Accelerating Returns was just beginning to reach the Tipping Point -- "that dramatic moment when something unique becomes common". In contrast, the 21st Century will require entirely new legal, sociological, philosophical, religious, political, moral and personal concepts.

Perhaps it is - 250 years earlier than claimed by the 1990s TV show "Babylon 5" - truly the "dawn of the Third Age of Mankind".

The Benefits Of Buying Books From Wholesale Book Sellers

Wholesale book sellers purchase large lots of both new and used books in bulk for redistribution, and sell them to other businesses as well as to individuals. Books are held in and shipped from warehouses when shipments are ordered, and they are sent directly to that company, other wholesaler, or individual’s address. Large lots are broken down into smaller lots to be sold to other wholesalers, and new and used books are redistributed without altering their contents to sell through their own stores. This process saves companies thousands of dollars compared to the purchase of books directly from the publisher. Many wholesalers have websites with long lists of titles and authors of both popular books and rare books in both new and used condition.

When books are purchased through wholesale book sellers, they can redistribute them at discounted prices. Individual customers purchasing publications from wholesale book sellers benefit by saving hundreds of dollars on what they buy in comparison to the purchase of books through average book sellers. These savings are also passed on to businesses and other wholesalers! When books are purchased in large quantities directly from publishers, they are usually not discounted and do not have bulk prices for the average book seller. Average book sellers must purchase books at cost, and need to mark up the price of their books to make a sufficient profit; an unfortunate situation for the customer. Companies and businesses can save thousands of dollars purchasing smaller lots from wholesalers instead of directly through the publishers.

Thousands of titles are carried through wholesale booksellers, and they list their titles by category. Some of these popular book categories include: Children’s Books, Comics/ Graphic Novels, Crime/ Thriller/ Mystery, Horror, Fiction, Biography and more. You can also find rare, antique and collectible books, audio cassettes and CDs, art, photography and architecture categories as well. If you’re searching for specific titles, authors or ISBN numbers, you can type in the information you are looking for and click search to find your book or author. This is an excellent way for college students to find specific editions of textbooks and books required for dissertation research, as these kinds of searches require a large database of books to choose from. The cost of the books works well with college student budgets. Many wholesale book sellers have satisfaction guarantees to cover any damaged products. They have their own policies on returns and exchanges, and you can find customer service is just a click away.
Shipping costs vary and include taxes and handling charges. Most wholesale booksellers will give you the option for priority shipping or overnight for additional charges. Choose a wholesale bookseller for your next book buy and test them out, customer service is very important and they will do their best to ensure that you are satisfied with your purchase. It is also possible to add promotional codes or customer codes to certain purchases for additional discounts. Keep your eyes peeled for specials and sales around the holidays.

A newlywed couple moves into their new home. After a couple of months, they realize that they have many more garbage bags than they need. However, they have not bought any garbage bags since they got married. Where did all of the garbage bags come from?

Your mission:

See how fast you can arrive at the correct solution by using the following clues: 1) The garbage bags were not a wedding gift
2) The couple did not bring any garbage bags with them when they moved
3) The bags were not in the couple's new home when they arrived
4) The fact that the two people are newlyweds is irrelevant
5) The type of home that the couple moved into is irrelevant
6) The bags were made of plastic
7) People gave the bags to the couple, but
8) The bags were not any type of gift
9) The bags are not "traditional" garbage bags
10) The bags came in many colors.

The solution:

Have you figured out the solution yet? The garbage bags are actually plastic bags from grocery and other types of stores! The couple only has small garbage cans in their home, and the plastic bags fit perfectly inside of them. Plus, the handles make them very extremely easy to tie shut when they become full. The trash cans need to be emptied more often than larger cans would, but that small inconvenience is worth the savings. Yearly garbage bag expenses: $0.00!

In addition to the monetary reasons, reusing grocery bags is a simple way to recycle and eliminate the waste created by throwing away the plastic bags inside of another garbage bag. Once you have a good supply of plastic bags, consider taking an empty canvas bag or backpack with you to the grocery store. Check the bag with a store employee when you enter so that no one thinks that you are shoplifting. Then, when you are done shopping, skip getting a new bag and load your purchases into your own reusable bag instead.

A few other super-easy ways to save money and recycle:

Save scrap paper. Save any papers that have nothing on the back or large blank spaces. Advertising flyers, old work papers and school papers all work well. You can cut the pages into smaller pieces if they would be more convenient for you. Put the paper in a stack or a box with a pen nearby, and you'll never have to scramble when you need to jot down something. Spots near the base of your house phone or beside the computer are both great locations.

Save sturdy boxes from food, electronics, mailers, etc. Cover them with the Sunday comics or some previously-used wrapping paper. Label each box with a marker and use as stackable storage for recipes, comic books or just about anything else.

Save large, empty plastic soda and juice bottles. Fill them with water, and store in your freezer. Having less open space in your freezer will help it run more efficiently. And when you need more room in the freezer, simply take out one of the bottles of ice!

Save torn and worn out clothing. Tear or cut them into pieces and use as rags for cleaning and dusting.

the 10th year anniversary is your "aluminum" gift...so maybe look for something with that in mind. Good Luck!

Simpsons Comic Books

It is easy to dress up in Marge Simpson Costumes

October 2009, and it's announced that Marge Simpson will include as the centerfold of Playboy. Yes, *that* Marge Simpson, the beautiful Simpsons Family personality, the housewife, the mummy of 3 will appear in the centrefold of Playboy mag. In 50 years, Marge will be the 1st cartoon personality to be on the centerfold. Marjorie'Marge' Simpson ( ne Bouvier ) is a fictional main character in the animated TV series The Simpsons and part of the eponymous family. Marge was created and designed by cartoonist Matt Groening while he was waiting in the lobby of James L. Brooks' office. Groening had been called to pitch a series of shorts based primarily on Life in Hell but instead made a decision to create a new set of characters.
Marge is the well-intentioned and intensely patient ma of the Simpson family. She is frequently portrayed as a stereotypical television mum and is usually included on catalogues of top'TV moms'. She has appeared in other media in relation to The Simpsons-including computer games, The Simpsons Movie, The Simpsons Ride, commercials, and comic books-and galvanized a whole line of merchandise.
Marge's particular blue beehive hairstyle was electrified by a mixture of The Bride of Frankenstein and the style that Margaret Groening wore in the 1960s. Julie Kavner, who was an affiliate of the first cast of The Tracey Ullman Show, was asked to voice Marge so that more voice actors would not be needed. Kavner has won many awards for voicing Marge, including a Primetime Emmy Award for superb Voice-Over Performance in 1992.

Marge is generally a stereotypical situation comedy mum, and she also plays the'long-suffering wife' who puts up with the escapades of her youngsters and her oafish partner. Marge regularly offers a grounding opinion for Homer and their marriage has often been wobbly. One of the first such episodes to depict this is'Secrets of a Successful Marriage' ( season 5, 1994 ), where Homer starts teaching an adult education class on how to build a successful wedding. He's at first unsuccessful, but gains the interest of the class when he starts giving away family secrets, plenty of which concern Marge. The day after, Homer is grimy and disheveled, and begs Marge to take him back, pronouncing the most important thing he can offer her that no-one else can is'complete and complete dependence.' initially, Marge does not see that as a benefit, but at last admits that he'really [does] make a gal feel needed.'

There are some great and straightforward methods to get dressed up as Marge Simpson for this Halloween. Get some blue bee hive hair wig, a green strapless dress and a big pearl necklace and you are set. Alternatively, you could dress in a trustafarian bunny outfit and add the blue beehive hair wig for fun. You should buy Marge Simpson Costumes here.

Comic book guy from the Simpsons?

Apparently he has a real name other than being known as 'Comic book guy'

Anyone know what it is?
Also can you tell me how you know his name? What episode was it in?

Jeff Albertson.
in the February 6, 2005 episode, "Homer and Ned's Hail Mary Pass," Comic Book Guy nonchalantly told Ned Flanders, "My name is Jeff Albertson, but everyone calls me 'Comic Book Guy'."

Scrapbooking Paper - Paper for the Scrapbook

Making a scrapbook is an art. This is because it takes more than just photos and newspaper clippings to express the personality of the person. If none of these are present, then it's just an album.

One of the most important things that the scrapbook needs is paper. This can be made of different material so you can stick photos or clippings and also a good background to match the layout on each page.

The paper used for scrapbooks are acid and lignin free. This means this they can accept writing using pens, chalk, pastel and crayon. This is also used for other things such as the background for picture framing.

Where can you get them? The best place which has more than just paper and pens is the bookstore. These are often sold in packs that may come in different designs and colors. Another good source is the internet, this is because of the increasing popularity of making scrapbooks that has prompted people to sell some of these items inexpensively online.

Scrapbook paper is not only available in plain prints. There are also some designs available that have floral and striped prints. There are also seasonal designs that are launched in the summer or in the winter which may depict special events in a given year.

The scrapbook can be done in different sizes which has also prompted manufacturers to also have this available in a variety of sizes and shapes. You can cut them to fit in saving time to be able to do other things.

The paper used doesn’t always have to serve as a background to feature those special moments. You can also print some great layouts from the internet. After finding the right layout then scanning a picture which will be inserted on it. When this has been completed, this can also be added to the scrapbook.

There are many ways to make a scrapbook. There is no ideal or proper way to do it. Some prefer to make a story like those seen in a comic book. There are others who start from end then go back to the beginning.

The paper used plays a big role in making the scrapbook complete. You should first think of what is needed then buy them either from the bookstore or off the web. After a few weeks, the final design can be shown to the public where friends and family will praise you for a job well done.
