Collecting Vintage Star Wars Figurines

The story of the Star Wars figurines began in 1978, with the first collection of 3.75" figures released by a small toy company from Cincinnati, Ohio, called Kenner. The range of characters included Princess Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, and R2-D2 droid. Apart from the figures Kenner also released a choice of corresponding vehicles, spaceships and playsets in the same scale as the figurines. There were also larger scale items released, but the term "Star Wars vintage action figures" normally relates to the 3 3/4" toys and figures released between 1978 and 1985.

Young Hobby

When I was younger the issue of boredom always seemed to come up. I long for those days now that my work week is 80+ hours but creativity was so important while growing up poor. One of my favorite things to do was pretend I was pitching in the major leagues and managed to situate a table on its side so that the tennis ball would either pop up or ground out to me. I spent days playing solo Monopoly and weeks creating a fully stocked video store mockup. I think the poorer a person is the more interesting their hobbies are.

Some very common hobbies include collecting things such as dolls, die cast cars, real cars, or weapons. Coin and stamp collecting have long been a hobby for many, especially of commemorative mints (www.coin-usa.com). Coin and paper money from around the world is collected by Trader Joes if you haven’t noticed. A lot of gold and silver coins are worth something because of the amount of the particular metal contained in it.

The collecting of action figures (www.herofigure.com) used to be isolated to the very young and has crept its way into the hands of middle aged men. Comic book popularity has enjoyed the same fate and has created multiple movie trilogy empires in Hollywood. I don’t know if this popularity is due to the growing infancy of adult men or the impressive quality of modern movies. Either way it looks as if the comic book genre will continue to impress.

A lot of collectors base their hobby on an addiction such as alcoholism. Wine collectors invest in storage units, large quantities of aging bottles, and some even build entire rooms customized with climate controlled environments for the storage and display of their wine. In college I remember seeing fraternity bedrooms outlined by old bottles of consumed Vodka as if they were little league trophies. One of the most popular social hobbies men have is a combination of beer and poker (www.queenplay.com). These events are usually shared on a regular basis with more than two people where food is consumed. This hobby can be extended to Las Vegas if the player needs a more stimulating environment.

Hobbies seem to differ between people depending on the geographic location. Shooting ranges are more popular here outside of Seattle and are even more popular if one visits the eastern portion of this state as opposed to the limits of the city. Hobbies differ between genders—shopping for clothes is more popular among women while playing basketball is more popular among men. Another demographic where hobbies tend to differ is in the different age groups. Gardening is very popular among the older folks while radio controlled racing is more popular amongst the young. Children spend more time swimming than they do cooking. Adults spend more time cooking than they do swimming. The same thing applies to paintball, snowboarding, skateboarding, and Saturday morning cartoons. Now that I have money I can actually buy things to entertain myself. Rather than pretending to ride a dirt bike I can actually get one.

The Magic of Kids Toy Collectibles

Comic books and original comic book art, coins, jewelry, antique furniture, sports memorabilia, signed photographs, collectible guitars, stamps, classic cars, you name it, they are all very popular collectibles. Collectibles don't have to hold intrinsic value either and can be comic books and other printed collectibles such as postcards.

Unfortunately there comes a time in almost every collectors life when their passion may somewhat fade. As we get older our ideas mature and perspectives change, however, one collectible area that seldom wanes as we age, and for many actually becomes stronger, is that of old toys. As each generation reaches old age, the toys we, played with, were given, and owned, as a child become more than just collection, they become memories and a link with a distant past.

Kids toys collectibles prices on the east coast are generally higher than prices in the mid west. Some of this price difference is due to there being fewer prospects, and some is due to attitude differences.

Prices for kids toys collectibles have been in the past few years. In fact they have been skyrocketing for even the non-rare collectibles.

Prices for antiques and all forms of collectibles can fluctuate widely and quickly depending on current demand. Prices may drop down to pre-demand levels once the boom has passed, or they may remain high due to diminished supply as dealers have difficulty replenishing inventories. Very often kids toys collectibles may tend to be in the latter category.

Starting kids toys collectibles collection is the great way to hold the memories. Whether you are wealthy or only have a few hundred pounds to invest in kids toys collectibles you will be able to find a niche collection area which will bring you much satisfaction and enjoyment creating.

Of course you may collect for your own amusement, or you may decide to collect for a living. Those that do best tend to start for their own satisfaction alone, but if they become astute buyers they may decide to quit their jobs and move on to make a living from their collectibles passion.

If you are going to get a good price you will have to be able to sell; that is target a market and promote your goods, negotiate and clinch a great deal.

When you can do that collectibles are a lucrative business for people who are in the know and can sell things.

Random Trivia to Know before you Watch - X-Men Origins: Wolverine

As the Middle East gears up for an early release of the fourth installment in the X-Men movie series on the 30th of this month, first-time watchers might want to fill themselves in on some facts about the film and its protagonist, Wolverine.

•    Wolverine is a character from the popular Marvel Comic X-Men and first made his appearance in the fictional world of Marvel superheroes in a cameo role in issue # 180 of the Incredible Hulk.

•    This was way back in 1974.

•    James Howlett was the name Wolverine was given at his birth and his father was a wealthy plantation owner by the name of John Howlett.

•    Wolverine is Canadian. He is believed to hold dual citizenship with Japan and maybe even the fictional place known as Madripoor (depicted in the comics).

•    In the X-Men comic books, Sabretooth is simply one of Wolverine’s nemeses. However, in the movie Sabretooth is depicted as Howlett/Wolverine’s half-brother and fiercest rival.

•    Five directors were at one point or another interested in directing X-Men Origins: Wolverine, however Gavin Hood of the award winning film Tsotsi, was picked for the job as Hugh Jackman, who plays Wolverine noticed parallels between the two respective protagonists.

•    Locations in Australia, New Zealand, Louisiana, Cockatoo Island and New South Wales can be seen in various parts of the film, much of which features open spaces.

•    Gambit, a mutant popular in the X-Men comic books, makes his first appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, much to the delight of the comic book Gambit’s fans.

Discover Calpe

In the heart of the Costa Blanca you can find Calpe, a city bathed by the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean, in Alicante, Spain.

There are some remains that determine that there were inhabitants in the region of Calpe in the Prehistoric Era, indeed some remains date back to the Bronze Age. However the Iberians were responsible for the first buildings, which were constructed on the higher grounds.

The Rock of Ifach (meaning "North" in the Phenician tongue) was the impressive natural lookout for the inhabitants that lived in the surrounding areas. Another lookout was the Morro de Toix Mountain, from which the Mascarat Ravine, an essential passage along the coast, could be controlled. The area gained in importance during the Romanisation period of the history of the Iberian Peninsula.

The township's proximity to the sea favoured marine trade and fish factories. Evidence of this can be found at the historical site, los Baños de la Reina (the Queen's Baths).

After the Peninsula was conquered by the Arab invaders, they were the first to build a "Castle of Calpe" overlooking the Mascarat Ravine.

When the area was conquered by the Crown of Aragón, the Muslim administration was maintained: small townships set apart and protected by a castle or fortress. Therefore, the inhabitants of the region were dependant upon the Castle of Calpe.

Calpe's rich cultural and natural heritage assures that there is a wealth of places to visit, be it a trip to the Rock of Ifach or to the recently established Comic Museum.

The Peñón d'Ifach is a 50.000m2 Rock that juts out of the sea and is joined to the mainland by an isthmus. It reaches a height of 332 m and was officially declared a Nature Park in 1987 thanks to the rich variety of flora and fauna.

The Rock of Ifach is ideal for hiking and climbing. Upon reaching the summit it is easy to see why it has been favoured as a lookout throughout history. Towards the Southeast one can gaze out over the sea and towards the Northeast the salt flats and the plain are easily discernible.
