How do you turn your comic book idea into a cartoon series?
Alot of cartoons I watch seemed to have started with comic books, significantly Dragonball Z. Something ive always wondered about is, how do comic book creators fund the projects of turning their comics into a cartoon?? I heard it costs about a million dollars for 30 minutes of animation, which im sure alot of these writers do not have. Who funds these projects? Do they have sponsors? What process would you take to have your comic idea acknowledged in this perspective??
Any comments would be great
Thanks!
How do you go about getting a license with an animator? Do they approach you first? How would you approach them?
Comic book creators do not foot the bills when their intellectual properties are turned into animated features. A producer of animated works will pay a licensing fee to whoever holds the rights to a particular comic (rights to many characters are owned by the publisher, not the person who created the original characters), produce a pilot episode and hope he can find someone who will buy a set number of episodes. Whoever buys the first rights to an animated series hopes to get high rating so he can charge sponsors who buy time in which to show commercials more money than he would if the show got lower ratings (and if the ratings slip too low, no sponsor will buy the time set aside for commercials).
