There's an inverse relationship between watching television and having faith in the human race. Unfortunately, we live in an age when empty-headed, shallow people can always find steady employment embarrassing themselves on television reality shows. That's not to say entertainment can't be found on these shows-but who wants to sit through 20 minutes of aspiring models whining for that one great clip where they explode and say something totally inappropriate or attack each other.
Fortunately for TV junkies, Joel McHale of E!'s "The Soup" is willing to put himself through that.
An actor and stand-up comic by trade, McHale found his niche becoming the show's host, where he skewers D-list pop-culture hangers-on (you can't really call them celebrities) with wild abandon. The show has a free-for-all feel to it, and often strays into silly territory-a recurring character is Mankini, a man wearing a bikini, and a clip of a little girl wincing while happily licking a pickle is heavily rotated.
But what keeps fans coming back to the show is McHale's sense of humor and knife-sharp cracks about the contestants on shows like "Tila Tequila, " "The Tyra Banks Show" and "Cee Dub's Dutch Oven." The last one has become a favorite, focusing on a cook who silently prepares food in his dutch oven. No charisma. No wisecracks. No talking.
The irony is that E!, a television network that's produce more than its fair share of vapid reality shows ("Girls Next Door, " etc.) also hosts one of the funniest ones taking pseudo-celebs to task for their ego-driven behavior.
But what many viewers of the show may not realize is that Joel McHale appears in more than just this one show. As an actor, he's appeared in everything from "Will and Grace" to "Spider-Man 2" to "Lords of Dogtown, " a fictional recreation of the surfer/skater culture in the 1970s. His stand-up goes after Hollywood and the pop-culture on television that he lambasts on the show. If you've never seen him perform off E!, you'd be highly encouraged to get Joel McHale tickets and see what he's like on stage.
