Mickey Spillane Takes His Final Hammer Blow

Mickey Spillane, the gangsta writer and creator Mike Hammer, just took his own final Hammer blow.

He went from writing comic books to writing, as you know, the most popular detective novels of his day.

The thin thrillers were packed with macho bravado, fast fists, the direct sex championed by his indelicately named hero, Mike Hammer. Well, at least Mickey had the discretion to refrain from giving him the possible middle name of "Sledge.

Apparently, Spillane did not spend much time in the reals of philosophy or other heady contemplation. The relative vacuousness allowed him to evade a sophisticated viewpoint and include all the hateful mayhem and loveless sex he could hammer into his tiny tomes.

Later in life, searching perhaps for redemption from his wayward writings, he became a Jehovah's Witness and actually used part of the money he amassed to fund building projects for the Biblically intent group.

Well, at least, the Mick's where the critics, who never did anything but take shots at him, can't get at him anymore.

He has folded up his misgivings and taken his eternal exit.

Mickey Spillane has been pounded for the last time.

If Stan Lee writes comic books, why do they have a hockey trophy named after him?? (Answers: 6) (Comments: 0)
Stan Lee doesn't look like he would be into hockey that much, maybe he played when he was a kid? Does he mind that the Stan Lee Cup is named after him? Did he pay the NHL lotsa money to have his name associated with hockey?

Will Eisners Classic Graphic Novel A Contract With God Being Adapted to Film

28 Jul 2010 at 4:12pm  One of the enduring examples of the graphic novel as a form is Will Eisner's A Contract With God, a collection of short stories that is often called the first graphic novel. It isn't that, but it is a wonderful book, and a great example of why Eisner is considered a master of comic book storytelling. Now, and this was probably inevitable, there is a film version in development. THR says that ...
